Dungarees - too old and out of shape? (Photos)

Mycatsmellsbad · 28/07/2020 07:39

Off out for the day with some very slim and glamorous people - I will be the biggest person there and I am so out of shape and wobbly I feel that none of my clothes flatter me.

I love the idea of dungarees but knew they wouldn’t be for me but for some reason I bought some yesterday and I’m not sure I can get away with them.

Can I get some honest (but not too brutal) mn thoughts please? I’m 40 if that makes any difference ( although I’ve never been one for saying clothes have an age but I do think dungarees are different).

I think you look really lovely in them

AmandaHoldensLips · 28/07/2020 07:45

Fab. You could "up" the look a bit with a crazy-print t shirt and some great sneakers. By the way you look great. Smile

Amicompletelyinsane · 28/07/2020 07:46

I like them. You look great. Wouldn't put you in the flabby or out of shape category either

VictoriaBun · 28/07/2020 07:46

Honestly - you look fine, and they suit you. But, you say your friends are glamorous. Do you think they will be dressed up for the get together ? I ask this because whilst your dungarees look lovely if they are all in dresses and full make up ( or whatever) then you might feel underdressed .

Dozer · 28/07/2020 07:48

Where are you going?

AwkwardAsAllGetout · 28/07/2020 07:48

I love them! Where are they from?

Meganplays · 28/07/2020 07:48

You look lovely. I agree with a PP though, as long as the outfit is dressy enough for the day’s plans?

OublietteBravo · 28/07/2020 07:50

They look great. I’m 44 and my dungarees are my favourite lockdown purchase. I was a bit apprehensive about wearing them when they first arrived, but now I absolutely love them. Even DD (16) and her friends have made positive comments.

Thinkle · 28/07/2020 07:52

I think they look lovely. I am your age and got some recently. Originally I was in the fence but I’ve really grown to love them, similar cut too. I think they do flatter your figure as they are a long column of colour and slim fit at the ankles.

My only comment is the Bretton stripe top with them. It’s a very standard look (certainly where I am) for women of our age. It looks nice, and it’s ‘safe’ but it’s not very interesting if you want to make an impact. My revelation with my dungarees was to wear them with vest tops, either very fitted and neutral or looser cami style and colourful. If it’s too cold add an oversized cardi accidentally off one shoulder.

There you go, I’ve done the very Mumsnet thing of imposing my style on you! And you didn’t even ask Grin

Keep them, you look lovely.

I agree, I'd find out what others plan to wear.
fabulous40s · 28/07/2020 08:02

I'm in the minority here but I'm just not keen on dungarees on any grown woman - looks really mumsy and childish, like we've given up, lost our fashion sense and wanna look like our kids.

Mycatsmellsbad · 28/07/2020 08:03

Thank you - we are off for a walk in the woods with our children so when I say glamorous they will be wearing jeans and t shirt type things but they will all do it in a glamorous and very styled way. You now those people who have just ‘got it’?

I’m just coming out of the baby years so am still working out my style and I’m very reliant on safe Breton stripes and monochrome! We are also on holiday so I’m limited to either this top or a black or grey t shirt.

Dungarees are from Tesco. Going to leave the label on whilst I make a picnic.

Don't be daft! They look great. I have a sainsburys pair, I'm 35 and a size 16. Iove them.

I think your overthinking :)

VictoriaBun · 28/07/2020 08:09

For a walk as you describe, you are perfectly dressed. Wear them and have a lovely time.

speakfriendandenter · 28/07/2020 08:13

I think you look fantastic! The top underneath looks fab too!
I wish I had your tummy so my dungarees fit nicely like yours do. Have fun.

biggirlknickers · 28/07/2020 08:20

I love them. They look great on you!

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 28/07/2020 08:20

You look like a person wearing clothes ...

I will be the biggest person there and I am so out of shape and wobbly I feel that none of my clothes flatter me.

None of this is apparent from your photos.

I’m not sure I can get away with them.

Never sure what this means. You are not indecent. Who is going to arrest you for leaving the house in clothes?

Perhaps you know you look perfectly fine ...

(Though yes, choose something other than the Breton t shirt to avoid becoming a walking cliché.)

thesunwillout · 28/07/2020 08:23

I really like them, I'm nearer 50 and a similar shape to you.
How tall are you?
I'm thinking a trek to Tesco, but it's miles away. Have to bring them home to try then another trek to take them back.

I would also wear something short sleeved or plain underneath.
The top is good but a little contrived.

LaGoulueRevenue · 28/07/2020 08:24

They look good. And clothes don't have an age limit! I always wonder what that means. But anyway it's not true so don't worry and enjoy your meet up

DivisionBelles · 28/07/2020 08:25

I think they look great. Really flattering.

Mycatsmellsbad · 28/07/2020 08:28

@PerditaProvokesEnmity I would love to have that attitude towards clothes ie they’re just clothes what is there to ‘get away with’.

Yours is the attitude I’m striving towards however I grew up with a mum who constantly commented on other people’s appearances saying things like ‘ooh she can’t wear that with that tummy’ or ‘look she’s showing her arms l, I don’t think I would if I were her’ and so on, so I’ve got a warped sense of what I look good in and what I don’t.

Couple that with a load of friends who are size 8-10 with the confidence of rhinos and it means I question my choices sometimes.

I'm 51 and I have lived in dungarees this summer. People keep asking me where I got them and a neighbour asked if I'd mind if she got some too, so I don't think there's a problem with being too old.

I think you look great and that you should wear them and enjoy your day. They look perfect for a walk and a picnic.

SquitMcJit · 28/07/2020 08:35

You look lovely. Definitely keep them. And have a nice day out.

hammeringinmyhead · 28/07/2020 08:36

I think they look lovely. And not at all like you've "given up". Hmm

I do wear mine with a plain top a lot of the time, despite owning 583 striped ones, or I will go with something printed with pineapples or something. They might also look good with the black t shirt.
