Dungarees - too old and out of shape? (Photos)

Off out for the day with some very slim and glamorous people - I will be the biggest person there and I am so out of shape and wobbly I feel that none of my clothes flatter me.

I love the idea of dungarees but knew they wouldn’t be for me but for some reason I bought some yesterday and I’m not sure I can get away with them.

Can I get some honest (but not too brutal) mn thoughts please? I’m 40 if that makes any difference ( although I’ve never been one for saying clothes have an age but I do think dungarees are different).

@Iloveliberty

They look great ! I’d roll the bottoms and wear them with plain white sneakers and a white tee shirt. Hope you have a fabulous day out 😊
Round here we have had a lot of rain. White sneakers would be wrecked after a walk in the woods. Did no-one else get torrential rain yesterday?

@notacooldad

Wait now - we need support groups for wearing dungarees?shock

I Have Lived Too Long
Me too.
To be honest I think dungarees are best for decorators, toddlers and members of Dexys midnight runners and don't suit most people no matter how slim they are. There's always better options.

So presumably you clicked on the thread to tell whoever it was that they don't look good, because you don't like dungarees anyway. That's like someone who doesn't like dogs going on a thread in the dog topic and telling them to get a cat because they make better pets, in your opinion.

Also if your name is at all accurate I don't suppose the OP cares about your opinion.

hammeringinmyhead · 28/07/2020 15:44

A support group is a specific name for an organised meeting, usually to share a burden.

Are my friends a support group because I would describe them as a group of nice, friendly women who are supportive of my choices as opposed to negative or critical?

Actually no I didnt click on the thread to say that. Scroll down.
I said earlier on that her age is fine and she is slim. She looks good. I even advised that she keeps the dungarees.
But that isnt the real issue.
The OP is concerned that she is going out with glamorous people. I said in my opinion (which is valid as any one else's, whether you agree with me or not) dungarees wouldn't be the best option if you were with that crowd. Personally if I was with mates who are very glam dungarees would be my last option, especially if I was so unsure of myself that I had to come on the internet to get opinions.
Dungarees would never be my first choice of clothing but that's just my taste. Others love them.
With some of my mates wearing dungarees, old trackies, tatty jean's to go to the woods would be ok and I would feel in keeping. If I wore the same thing with other friends I would feel like a hobo!

Also if your name is at all accurate I don't suppose the OP cares about your opinion
Lol!!😂😂😂😂
Bless!

Ikeasucks · 28/07/2020 16:01

You look much better than i was expecting from your description

lotusbell · 28/07/2020 16:25

They look great on.i have some but I'm 5ft nothing and pudding shaped so I know I'll look like a Playschool presenter. If I was just a few inches taller, I'd go for it but the lack of height and more than ample tum and boobs will just look ridiculous. You can definitely carry it off.

SmileyClare · 28/07/2020 22:34

I did laugh a bit about the dungaree support group too Grin I'm sure it's not as intense as it sounds.

Op, firstly I think we have the same mum. Mine was just the same and I've grown up very anxious about my appearance. You look great by the way.

Secondly, won't you be hot? Is it a serious walk or just ambling about in the woods?

I would add that if I don't love something as soon as I try it on and feel happy, then I spend the whole day feeling self conscious, even if people tell me it looks nice.

Sorry if this is all unhelpful.

Splattherat · 28/07/2020 22:38

You look lovely and slim. I would wear them
but maybe with a different top.

Ginfordinner · 28/07/2020 22:41

Hot!
It's been so cold here our heating came on, and it's been blowing a hooley all day.

DD says the dungarees would look much better with a belt.

ScarlettDarling · 28/07/2020 22:47

I'm 46 and have loved wearing my dungas this summer. My dh hates them and sings 'Come on Eileen' whenever I wear them but I don't care! You look great op, bet your friends will go buy some after seeing you in them.

SmileyClare · 28/07/2020 23:04

Hot? Its been blowing a hooley all day Is that Scottish? I see your point. Op might be in a cold part of the world. Grin

I always wonder how easy it is to go to the toilet in dungarees. I had an unfortunate incident in a pub toilet wearing a jumpsuit. I had to pull it all down and when I struggled back into it, I realised it had trailed into a wet patch on the floor.

IncrediblySadToo · 28/07/2020 23:05

I'm here by accident 🤣this is not my natural habitat...

Is the dungaree fashion now to wear them quite fitted? When I wore them, the fashion was for them to be very baggy & only one shoulder strap done up.

Whatever you wear, do it with confidence & don't compare yourself to the others! You have a lovely figure & you seem lovely - so don't put yourself down 🌷

Sorry but this made me laugh 😆

MynameisHappind · 29/07/2020 06:06

You dont look wobbly or out of shape. Ok so you are bigger than them but arent to general population..i dont like that style of outfit but it looks fine on you in terms of fit.

MynameisHappind · 29/07/2020 06:07

Yeah i too think of toddlers and painter decorators when i see dungarees trousers when its the dress dungaree version though i dont get that effect.

MynameisHappind · 29/07/2020 06:09

Short sleeve white cropped top under it might look better

BlackberrySky · 29/07/2020 06:16

I think you're doing yourself down OP, you don't look remotely out of shape! As a few others have said though, it's really hard to look your best in dungaress as there is always a more flattering option. If you want to be practical and comfortable then they fit the bill, but maybe not if you want to feel more glamorous or well turned out.

TornadoOfSouls · 29/07/2020 08:32

In general I’m not a dungaree fan, but I like the fit of yours - you look good in them. they often look better on women who aren’t skinny - I don’t quite know why. I am a Breton fan, but agree a plain black, white, grey or navy T-shirt might work better.

Don’t wear a scarf or band round your head unless you actually do want to look like one of Dexy’s Midnight Runners.

Your friends may be slimmer than you, but slimness isn’t everything when it comes to style. Wear your dungarees with pride!

HMSSophie · 29/07/2020 08:36

For the love of God it's come to something when you can't see how lovely you look in those dungarees.

avocadotofu · 29/07/2020 12:36

You look lovely!

dudsville · 29/07/2020 13:06

I'm hoping we get an update on the top! I'm too late to say I agree that was the problem. I think dungarees for adults are given a real boost by being paired with a really nice top, the sort of thing you wouldn't imagine, as opposed to a fun or interesting tshirt, which, in my opinion is more for dressing down a fabulous skirt. Think button down and collar in a nice fabric. You can roll the sleeves up if you felt it was too formal a choice.
