First Mulberry Handbag

I’ve looked longingly at various Mulberry handbags over the years but could never justify spending so much money on me. DH has suddenly said he’d like to buy me one for our anniversary (Leather anniversary) I did say it was too much to spend but he is adamant that he really wants me to have one as he wants me to have something special. He said he wants me to choose which one I’d like. I don’t know whether to go for the zipped Bayswater in oxblood for everyday or the small Darley in either black or oxblood. I feel drawn to the Darley as it would be a special bag for evenings out or special occasions. Part of me thinks go for the black as I tend to wear black shoes mostly when going out but I do also like the look of the oxblood. Please help me to decide and also where is best to order it from? Is it better to order direct from Mulberry or Click and Collect from House of Fraser? I can’t see any discount codes so not sure where to purchase it from.

Hello. How very exciting. I think you need to decide if you want an everyday bag or a more evening one and then you can decide the colour, You can now buy from the Mulberry factory outlet, online; the prices are around the normal sale prices. You won't get a discount code for Mulberry but you may from another store. Definitely far fewer places sell Mulberry now so discounts off full prices are rare these days, sadly. Happy browsing.

I have the medium Bayswater. Can't remember the shade but it's a dark green (ocean or sea something I think) and it's lovely. DH bought me it from the duty free at Heathrow and he reckons he saved about £400 on it. If your DH is going to be going through there any time soon then I'd definitely recommend getting it there rather than a House of Fraser, etc.

Tootired1 · 24/07/2020 00:16

£400 saving that’s amazing. DH tends to fly from Birmingham mostly but does occasionally fly from Heathrow. Tbh, I hadn’t even thought about a Duty Free purchase, so thank you. I think I’ll probably go for an ‘evening out’ style bag for my first one. Does anyone have the small Darley? Would you go for black or oxblood? They are the same price everywhere from what I can see.

I have the Darley in Oxblood and I love it! I’d wanted it for years and finally treated myself when I got a promotion. I also have the the Lily in rose water (blush pink).

Only thing I’d say is that while I love the Oxblood colour I tend to only use it in the autumn/ winter.

cwtchesandprosecco · 24/07/2020 11:30

I’d also recommend going into to store and ‘taking the bag for a walk’ Grin. I was adadamant I was buying a Bayswater until I tried them on.

I don’t know where you’re based, and it’s probably all changed because of Covid, but the Mulberry shop on New Bond St was a really lovely experience!

smileannie · 24/07/2020 16:00

You got the right attitude when you say ‘for my first one”.

I don’t know if their sale is still on (usually summer and just after Christmas) but they usually discount quite a bit and i tend to upscale that way eg buy something that is more expensive that I would spend pre sale but sale price makes it more affordable.
Love all the colours.

Have fun choosing and using.

CushionsandCandles · 24/07/2020 16:06

I have both but they are for totally different occasions.
The zipped is a bigger/everyday bag and the Darley- smaller/going out bag.
So totally depends upon what you want it for.
So.... my Bayswater is Black and the Darley oxblood. Love both!

Srictlybakeoff · 24/07/2020 16:13

I love mulberry but don’t have a darley or a zipped Bayswater. I do like small bags tho so some of the Bayswater bags are too big and heavy for me. I love a lily as a going out bag.
The mulberry outlet store is currently available online ( it’s not usually) .Might be worth a look there. I would buy direct from mulberry rather than house of Fraser as they will open an account and let you know about sales etc in the future. Buying mulberry’s can be addictive

Alsohuman · 24/07/2020 16:22

My first Mulberry was a grey Bayswater. I never use it now because it’s so heavy, even when it’s empty. I have a Tessie satchel and a Shepherd’s satchel, both cross body, which I use all the time. I’d never buy a “going out” bag because it would get comparatively little use, they’re too nice not to get the most use possible out of them.

LunaLoveFood · 24/07/2020 16:30

I think it depends on how often you go out.
Do you want a special bag that spends most of the time stored away or do you want use it regularly.
Personally I'm not sure I would want to use such an expensive bag everyday but on the other hand, not sure I would want to spend such a lot on something I would hardly use. sorry, need to get the splinters out of my arse from sitting on the fence

ShalomJackie · 24/07/2020 16:51

Buy one for everyday I would say. They are definitely worth it. Even my oldest one looks brand new.

I have 5 altogether 3 in Oxblood, one black and one taupe. Oxblood goes with literally every colour. I definitely like the ones with zips as I worry about spillage when I put them on the floor. To be fair with my first and when it was new it was about 2 years before it went on the floor!

huuunderickssss · 24/07/2020 17:01

Get it from John Lewis ,

MikeUniformMike · 24/07/2020 17:37

Both are nice.
I think if you are splashing out that much get one that you will use day in day out.

The bayswater is very popular, and for good reason, but it is heavy.

The old version was much classier than the current one.

Tootired1 · 24/07/2020 22:56

Ah, thank you so much everyone. DH doesn’t understand why I haven’t just ordered one. I think I’m going to go for the Darley. I’m leaning 55% towards black 45% oxblood purely on the basis I have a (much) cheaper Jaeger handbag in an oxblood colour that I still use. John Lewis is out of stock so I’ll have to order into House of Fraser or direct from Mulberry. Feel ridiculously excited about this purchase. Thank you all for your lovely and supportive comments 😊

I’ve just bought my first Mulberry bag. I went for the Anthony in oxblood in the end (even though I had a lost of 3 before I went and that wasn’t on the list!). I wanted a everyday bag, not too big but not too small, comfy and in oxblood. I tried pretty much the whole shop and that ticked all the boxes.

huuunderickssss · 25/07/2020 08:19

Don't order from house of Fraser , don't they have a terrible reputation for delivery .

LadyFrumpington · 25/07/2020 08:23

I have the amberley in oxblood and have been stopped multiple times by strangers to ask about it.

The oxblood is such a great colour and much more versitile than i thought

SpeckledyHen · 25/07/2020 11:01

Get it direct from Mulberry. Will come well packed and on time .

anonacatchat · 25/07/2020 11:05

Use cashback and Amex if you have one . Double whammy

mrsrhodgilbert · 25/07/2020 17:20

I’d also recommend ordering directly from Mulberry, I wouldn’t be spending that much money with HofF online anymore.

purplepingu · 25/07/2020 17:27

Have a look on FarFetch, I managed to get a small Millie for a couple of hundred pounds cheaper than direct from Mulberry back in February. Was sourced from an independent stockist in London and I got to use a discount code as a new customer.

Tootired1 · 25/07/2020 17:30

Thank you for all of your advice and sharing your experiences. I think I need to try a few out but the John Lewis in Birmingham where I’ve looked at them before has not reopened after Lockdown 🙁 I’m going to Devon in a few weeks and I believe that there is a Mulberry shop not too far (Not sure if it is an outlet or Mulberry shop) so going to persuade DH and kids that we should stop off and have a look. Do the outlet shops also stock bags that are not discounted lines?

sorry, wrong post!

Soph88888 · 25/07/2020 17:51

Go for an every day bag. Mulberry I wouldn't see as a brand for an evening bag, for that I'd go for something like YSL
