Violet/purple shampoo

My dyed Auburn/red hair has got pretty brassy in the sun and is now a horrible Orangey-yellow. Would I be right in thinking a violet/purple shampoo could tone that down? I was going to try the Charles worthington as it’s sulphate free and I have keratin treatments so need that.

it would be blue shampoo for orange tones and purple for yellow tones

Lush do a lovely purple shampoo. Lasts for ages and smells of violets.

I bought Fanola No Orange blue shampoo based on recommendations here. I didn't do anything at all unfortunately. It seems it also comes in a mask, that's more potent. That might be a better bet.

Do you think I should be getting blue or purple shampoo? My natural hair colour was auburn but is now mouse with a bit of grey. Will the shampoo strip it back to that?

The shampoo doesn't strip anything. It neutralises the tones opposite to them on the colour wheel. Do you think they are more orange or yellow toned? Or try both

opinionatedfreak · 18/07/2020 18:12

I use Schwarzkopf silver shampoo to neutralise yellow. My hairdresser recommends it and I've used it for years.

I've posted a link to a 1litre bottle as it is much cheaper ml for ml to buy in that quantity. It's really nice shampoo.

WRT your hair colour - A colleague offloaded a salon size bottle onto me when she stopped having auburn highlights - she had been using it to stop them going orange. So sounds like it works for that too.

Try Kevin Murphy, he does a shampoo/conditioner for blonde which is purple and one for red hair too.
I put the conditioner on dry hair for 30mins then wash out with shampoo. Works to tone down my brassiness every so often. It penetrates the hair better when it’s dry as opposed to when it’s wet.

Blue not purple

justilou1 · 22/07/2020 04:53

Definitely blue not purple - for darker hair.

So what colour is your hair? Mouse or orangey yellow? I’m confused.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 22/07/2020 09:14

I use this PRO:VOKE Touch of Silver Toning... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07NCX2VCC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&tag=mumsnetforu03-21.

There’s also a treatment masque which is really good too. And not expensive

justilou1 · 22/07/2020 12:04

Tony & Guy have a VERY blue shampoo.

ThatsHowWeRowl · 22/07/2020 12:05

Yes, I agree it sounds like you need a blue rather than purple shampoo. Purple shampoo only works on very yellow hair that is already quite light.

zippyswife · 22/07/2020 18:21

So... my last keratin treatment really dried my hair out. So I got the hairdresser back and she put a moisture mask in and now it looks lovely. The colour is no longer too orange/yellow. How does that happen?

Thanks for the advice. I’ll be get the blue shampoo as recommended if I have the problem again!
