How to tie hair back to create width?

My hair is shoulder length straight and fine I would like to be able to tie it back so it doesn't blow in my face or if it's hot, but it just looks awful.
My face I long and it accentuates it, it doesn't look too bad in bunches by I really am too old for bunches. Grin
How can I easily tie it back with a bit of width at ear level?
I am totally useless at having hair, I have had my hair very short for nearly 40 years, so it needs to be really simple.

Get a couple of combs and instead of pulling it all back just take it back of your face - using the combs slightly above and behind your ears, but don't pull it too tight. Sort of like this:

Use a long barette like this one

It'll create a wide ponytail. I've found that more flattering on my lockdown hair than just putting it back in a ponytail with a band.

Thank you for answering. I haven't got any combs to try that with, but I am not sure it would keep my hair off my face as much as I would like.
Hair blowing in my face annoys me so much. I am tempted to get my hair cut short again- long hair is supposed to easier?! My hairdresser kept telling me it would be fun, but mostly it gets on my wick. I'm not sure I like it even when it is freshly washed and styled let lone when it is blowing all about or getting tangled up in the night!
How do so many people put up with it?Confused
