Box dye over highlights?

I have highlighted hair, which is naturally blonde, verging on red when it gets darker in the winter. But not a beautiful, vibrant red, more mousey red, if there is such a thing!

The highlights are growing out, as the last time I had them done it was more lockdown.

I'm wanting to dye it a little darker. Maybe light brown / dark honey blonde.

But I will have to do it myself. My hairdresser is booked out and I only managed to get in to have a cut with her about 6 weeks in advance.

Can it be done? What should I use? Something not permanent maybe?

I don't have strong feelings about my hair, so if it goes a bit wrong, I won't be beside myself, but obviously if it's a complete disaster zone I could probably just leave it alone and live with the grown out highlights a bit longer iyswim.

Any advice much appreciated!

find a different hairdresser

There is so many variables that could happen here with highlights and box dye. I wouldn’t dare

I think you will hate it the day you do it but 3 to 5 washes later you will love it. The shades will come back as there is some washout but the overall colour will live.

There are 3-4 wash in colours you can try. I've been experimenting with them through lockdown on highlighted hair. Have graduated to a semi permanent ( up to 24 washes) although kind of wish I hadn't done that as turns out hairdresser could have fitted me in for highlights- but I really don't fancy having to wear a mask for the 3 hours it takes, so I can wait a few more months and just get it cut for now.
