Topical niacinamide and itchy face

It's really effective for sebaceous hyperplasia but it's making my face so itchy! (Dermatologist said to try adapalene - a retinol - but for various reasons I haven't been able to get it.)

As little as half a drop mixed with a pump of moisturiser no more than once a week causes this reaction. It doesn't bother my chest at all oddly.

I've had pretty good results over the years with salicylic acid, retinoids and retinol - for brightening/freshening/smoothing - and haven't had any problems with irritation (even prescription retinol was less irritating), but they haven't helped the hyperplasia.

Is this a common reaction? I read that it's usually tolerated very well. I'm using The Ordinary (10% + zinc 1%) and I know it's not generally well thought of here. Is it worth trying a different brand or formulation?
