I find the ones I have are too course and don't leave my nails smooth enough.

Following!

I have a glass/cryst one from boots (Leighton Denny) that was about a tenner but lasts years. Very fine, never looses its 'grit' and you just rinse it under the tap every now and then. Comes in a case to stop it breaking.

MulberryPeony · 09/07/2020 07:42

I second the glass file.

Glass files! They sell them in all my local supermarkets

Glass nail files are a game changer. I have had cheap ones and expensive ones, and in my experience it does make a difference. My Champneys one at £10 feels far better than the cheap £2 I had from a supermarket (and which broke in 2).

You can use them in both directions without damaging the nail, unlike with emery boards.

Yes to glass files. I have a small one and a large one from Margaret Dabble and they are great. www.margaretdabbs.co.uk/product/crystal-nail-file/

Another vote for glass. I bought my first one a couple of years ago and will never go back. My nails are in far better condition now than they were when I used an emery board. I've only had to replace it as I left it in my bag going through airport security and it was confiscated.

I've got the Margaret Dabbs glass file too (freebie with a Victoria Health order) and it's really great.

Also yes to getting what pay for. My £10 file gives a far smoother finish than the £3 file I got from new look. It also works out more cost effective than emmery boards after a few months too as they last forever (until you drop it and it breaks, which is why I like my Leighton one because it comes in a strong case)

Mont Bleu crystal glass nail files from the Czech Republic are wonderful.

I have three I was given about five years ago and they are still as effective as the day I got them.

evilharpy · 09/07/2020 15:07

Mine is the same as lucyluvesfood posted above and it's great, I think it gives a really good finish.

evilharpy · 09/07/2020 15:12

Another thing I have started doing is that if my nails get too long (they do grow extremely fast even though they're weak) rather than trying to file the length down, I use nail clippers to shorten them and the file just to smooth it and round off the corners a bit. I keep them quite square as a nail tech told me that that was the strongest shape and it definitely has made a difference, far less splitting and breaking. I've read mixed things about nail clippers but my nails have been much better since I started using one.

Ginfordinner · 09/07/2020 19:07

I do the same as you evilharpy

BeBraveAndBeKind · 09/07/2020 21:52

Another vote for Leighton Denny glass files. My nails were weak and would peel off in layers before I switched. It's made a massive difference.

justasking111 · 09/07/2020 22:00

Leighton Denny glass file. I inadvertently put it in the washing machine last week with the bedding, horrors as I saw it going around inside the machine, but it came out intact.

justasking111 · 09/07/2020 22:01

Sorry got side tracked by that memory. What I should say is that my nails have not cracked, snagged or broken since I started using it.

Thank you - ordered one - I had no idea they are so good. Smile
