Stupid question about haircut

Like many posters I am excited about getting a long overdue haircut post "lockdown"!

I have been on Pinterest and found some short styles I like, the same kind of cut was recommended by my old hairdresser when I went for colour in the new year. I have moved house since then and would need to go to a new hairdresser, I am planning to go to a friend's hairdresser (my friend has lovely haircuts).

Hair is currently shoulder blade length, I have had it just under the shoulders for at least a couple of years and before that it was a bit longer and layered. Haven't had short hair since uni (and that wasn't even that short - kind of a "Rachel" do).

I've got a really stupid question. If you go in to get in cut short, do they shave it/clipper it at the back automatically? Or do they tell you before? It's the only thing I'm a bit nervous/confused about. And how can you see what they're doing at the back there?

Are you having a pixie cut?
They clipper mine at the back but mainly to tidy up the edges and remove stray neck hairs. But do just ask what they are planning as every hairline is different and will need a different approach.
In terms of not seeing what they are doing you should have photos of the backs of haircuts that you like and show those.
It will feel way too short at first if you have long hair now and you’ll feel very odd at first, but you must go as short as you dare it it’ll grow out to a shaggy mess too quickly.
It is great having short hair though!

Thanks, Thinkle. Does your hairdresser ask if you want it clippered?

And the first time you went short did you know/ did they explain that it would need clippering?

This is my hairline (hair clipped up, sorry, it's messy). My hairdresser says it's quite a high hairline? It's kind of goes straight across.

Ignore the fact that my hair is actually shaved. I had mine done today. He used the clippers on the hairline to straighten it up where the red line is, basically getting rid of the stray hairs that were between the straight line and the dotted one.

Apologies, it's really hard to photograph the back of your own head!

I've fairly short hair (longish pixie) and my hairdresser has used two different types of scissors, a straight blade and a clippers on various parts of the cut over the years. He's never told me what he was using, just got on with it. Is there a particular reason you're concerned about the clippers?

HadleyHem · 06/07/2020 17:44

Thanks, VeggieSausageRoll. Did he ask before if you want him to clipper that bottom part? Is this your usual cut or have you gone shorter/ changed cut post "lockdown"?

Your back of head photo is better than mine! Smile

Thanks MotherForkinShirtBalls. I think I'm quite an anxious, shy person and I am a bit anxious about not knowing what's going on when getting a new haircut. From shaved/ clippered it must take some time to grow out if it doesn't look good and it can't be covered up. And I have never had a cut with clippers before.

The first time you had yours in that style, did you know it was going to be clippered? Sorry for all the questions

I think the first time I had it done he just said he was going to use the clippers to tidy up the stray hairs. The first time he actually shaved my head (I have a grade 3) it was very much discussed 😂 If you're worried, chat to them, they won't mind discussing the plan with you. This is my usual cut. Just to give you an idea, it had been 20 weeks since my last cut (it's usually every 6 weeks!) and in that time I'd gone from a grade 3 to being able to do a little pony tail (like you'd do on the top of a toddlers head but at the back)

The new cut I'm thinking of is a very short bob, like Karlie Kloss has/had. The sides are kind of mid ear length (above the earlobe).

Or a Fleabag but think that would need some daily styling.
