Designer bag for 21 year old

Hi
I am looking to buy a designer handbag for my step daughter who will be 21 in a few weeks. She is returning to university overseas where lots of the girls have plenty of cash. She is really down to earth, sporty and quite practical but also would like to fit in. Am flexible on everything really and budget is max £1000 preferably less as it's just from me, her dad is buying her something special as a joint gift from him and his ex wife. Any ideas?

I love her bags and just a little different from the traditional.

annieareyouokhun · 06/07/2020 22:33

The Gucci disco bag in red is lush. It's a good size to fit all her bits in and can be dressed up or down. She's a very lucky girl!

I’d have wanted something a bit obvious at that age, def not a mulberry. LV or similar

I agree. I love my Louis Vuitton bag

Thanks everyone I have shown her this thread and she is going to take a look at all the suggestions and let me know which one she likes best. She is so happy to have the chance to get such a treat ( she doesn't really own anything designer) and I really appreciate all the help.

Will definitely update you and may also treat myself too!

I would go for the LV Neverfull. It’s absolutely timeless, all ages use it. I use it as my work bag and also as my travel hand luggage and see women from early 20’s to 80’s using it. They also age beautifully and look better the older they get

Alsohuman · 07/07/2020 19:19

The Gucci Disco bag is gorgeous in red. I’m very tempted.

ILoveTotoro · 07/07/2020 19:20

Oh how lovely, lucky stepdaughter

I love the small YSL satchel type ones, not sure what they are called. and they seem very in atm (altho I am erm...a bit past 21 soooo)

coronabeer23 · 07/07/2020 19:22

OMG I have just seen the price of a neverfull. They are extortionate, I’m sure mine was about £800 two years ago. Def buy her that as it’s timeless and will be totally out of anyone’s budget if they keep bumping up the prices

GoingBackTo505 · 07/07/2020 19:29

Another vote for the Gucci Disco, I have a black one and use it every day. I got a Louis Vuitton Speedy for my 21st and I know they're not very "in" right now but I still love it so much even ten years later. Love the Neverfull too.
Not sure about Mulberry for a 21st. They've always seems a bit more grown up than me. I only ever see women maybe later 20's onwards with a Mulberry.

Miseryisabutterfly · 07/07/2020 19:34

I don’t think you can go wrong with a simple Gucci, Chanel or YSL.

Mirrorxx · 07/07/2020 19:35

I also have a Gucci disco that I use as an everyday bag. It’s surprisingly spacious

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 07/07/2020 19:37

It's not quite in the same league but I have the Perry tote from Tory Burch as an alternative to the LV Neverfull and it is brilliant as a day-to-day bag. Google it (sorry can't link it as I can't currently access the UK site).

AhNowTed · 07/07/2020 19:54

I wouldn't recommend the Mulberry Bayswater to anyone. It's way too heavy and bulky. I regret buying it, and use my cross-body Antony far more.

And Mulberry is probably a bit 'old' for a 21 year old.

opinionatedfreak · 07/07/2020 19:58

I really want a mulberry bayswater backpack.

Again, I'm not 21. And I'm not sure Mulberry is such a big brand in the states - I'd give her a short list (with no prices)!

damnthatanxiety · 07/07/2020 20:09

Mulberry is a bit old for a 21 year old. It's too staid and doesn't have any glam that her US friends sound like they have. Mulberry are more like work horses.

Alsohuman · 07/07/2020 20:45

My stepdaughter is about to receive my Bayswater, which she’s coveted for years, because it’s so heavy. I don’t really use such a big bag any more. My everyday bag is a Tessie satchel, I like crossbody these days.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/07/2020 21:52

I'd want a cross body too. A simple one. I also only use a card holder now not a purse, so for me, I'd want one of each of these.

GOLD cross body bag

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/07/2020 21:53

Dunno what the random GOLD was in that link!

Alsohuman · 07/07/2020 22:03

I’m not keen on the obvious branding on those, I bet the leather feels wonderful though.

ttigerlilly · 09/07/2020 15:30

There is Givenchy bag for sale on the Selfridges website which are very practical and would suit a sporty woman, however it is around half the price that you were looking to spend - it has been reduced from £825 to £520.
I think something of this style would go with absolutely everything too

As I'm a similar age, I second the votes for Gucci (the Soho or Marmont) or Saint Laurent (the Lou or the Niki, the latter is probs a bit over budget though). Possibly a Louis Vuitton tote too as they are a great size and hard-wearing, although they are seen everywhere these days.

Gingefringe · 09/07/2020 17:20

My daughter had a LV Neverfull for her 21st - she loves it and uses it daily. It still looks fabulous.
