I had the odd bit of grey then during lockdown I went purple, the bright one. When looking straight in the mirror the grey looks quite solid and wide but this photo taken by ds looks less.

I don't care about going grey, won't be dying my hair purple again, but would like to do something to make it less stripes zebra like.

Any ideas ??

Less stripy as it grows out I meant.

Are you able to get to a hair dresser? I’m afraid I’d recommend doing that first off then using a box dye in your chosen colour from then on.

JollyGiraffe12 · 04/07/2020 16:03

It’s not that bad...just stick a chocolate brown semi permanent dye on it then see a hairdresser when you can

SunshineCake · 04/07/2020 16:07

Hairdresser isn't really an option and I want to stop dyeing it. It is more a way of blending with one or maybe two more dyes as it grows out.

Thank you.

The only thing I can suggest is either temporary colour to blend it as it grows out, or one of those sprays that touch up roots.

coffeewithmilk · 04/07/2020 16:09

I think because there is still some reminants of the colour there, it will be hard to get the same colour all over if you do it yourself, especially if you want to go lighter.
Can you get hold of a root spray? Or even put in a semi permanent dye and try to time the fade of that with going to a hairdressers?

I think a golden brown with some low lights would be lovely, and it makes the grey grow through a lot more bearable because it's not as severe when grey grows through on dark hair

Nixee2231 · 04/07/2020 16:13

I would fade the purple with color remover, vitamin C tablets or clarifying shampoo then dye it a cool brown that'll blend in nicely with the grays.

SunshineCake · 04/07/2020 17:29

I think it looks more silver and a wider strip in the mirror and with the purple being dark it is quite a contrast. I'm not sure what colour to dye my hair so that the grey is less noticeable and then after one or two more dyes I can just give up. I'm not really going out so it is all online shopping.

I feel I am older now and really not sure what colour would suit me. I appreciate your help, thank you. Just need to be brave I guess.

One other thing, j just dyed dd hair black and she didn't tell me she had dripped on the floor. It has dried in and so far baby wipes, floor wipes and some weird thing of dh hasn't cleaned it off. Any ideas please? Thank you again.

@SunshineCake I think there are some apps on your phone that you can try out what colour hair would suit you. I think L'Oréal might have one on their website.
As for stuck in hair dye, use nail polish remover or put a bit of hand sanitizer and it should lift

AriettyHomily · 04/07/2020 17:44

Hand sanitizer for the dye - worked when I turned my hands purple dyeing without gloves!

SunshineCake · 04/07/2020 19:23

Would it work even though the dye has dried into the flooring? Apparently dd didn't notice it. Bleach hasn't worked.

Acetone will work for the dye stains

SunshineCake · 05/07/2020 20:55

Sadly the acetone didn't work. It isn't terrible and I am hoping it will clean up eventually. Thanks.

I read a thing earlier that WD40 works on turmeric - might be worth a try? (I've used it successfully on other stains on our carpet).

Try rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) it generally works on stuff like that
DelphiniumBlue · 05/07/2020 23:26

If you want to stop dyeing, I'm not sure that semi permanent is the way to go. It's not a lot less permanent than ordinary permanent dye. I don't know if there's anything longer lasting than a temporary colour, which would actually cover the greys.
It might be worth going in the sun to fade the darkest bits, then try a temporary colour all over. I haven't tried it myself, but am reading that using either chemicals or vitamin c to fade, can make your hair very dry.
If your daughter is handy with dye, could you try putting in streaks/ highlights with her help? I'm thinking of trying that myself, wondering if they still make Sun-in or something similar.

SunshineCake · 06/07/2020 07:02

I used Sun-in a lot as a teenager ! Probably wouldn't now as didn't always go well Grin.

I want another colour to put on so that the grey is less obvious as it grows through as I don't mind it but such an obvious contrast looks ridiculous. I just don't know what colour would suit me. I have been blonde, brunette and red, oh am purple and a lot of the time they could have been my natural colour but now I'm not sure what colour to use. I feel too old for blonde but lighter seems logical to blend in the grey.
