Would you use an older beauty therapist?

I'm a beauty therapist and looking to set up my own business and add fillers and permanent makeup to my resume. I have been off for 15 yrs raising DC and am ready to work now. I am currently 47 and am wondering if people would rather go to a younger therapist or would be happy to go to an older one, may just be a crisis of self really but I have to ask. Thanks

I don't care how old you are if you're good at your job.

wizzywig · 03/07/2020 19:39

Yes of course, at least id have something in common with you and we would be on the same wavelength.

emsyj37 · 03/07/2020 19:39

My wax lady is 45 and my eyelash lady is well into her 50s. They are both extremely busy and booked up (under normal circumstances). I guess the 19 year olds might prefer someone younger if they perceive them to be more trendy/current but there are plenty of busy beauty therapists that I know of in my area who are in your age range and beyond.

Yankathebear · 03/07/2020 19:41

Mine is late 40’s. I have never considered her age until reading this. She’s good and highly recommended which is all I care about.

joyjester · 03/07/2020 19:42

At 52 I would much prefer a lady more my age..far more comfortable!

DukeOfEarlGrey · 03/07/2020 19:44

Yes, wouldn’t question it.

Pikachubaby · 03/07/2020 19:47

I am 48, and rarely go as it’s often young girls who don’t understand older skin

I’d love make up advice and beauty treatments from someone my own age or thereabouts

Same for a PT, a 21 yr old does not understand how stiff older knees can get Grin

GrumpyHoonMain · 03/07/2020 19:48

I use Indian beauticians and all of the best ones are older than 40. The make up / nail artists often don’t even wear make up / long nails themselves but that doesn’t stop youngsters from booking them. You just need to be good at what you do.

MsF1t · 03/07/2020 19:50

When I used to get waxed, the best ever waxer I ever went to was a lady in her 70s. She was amazing. And way more interesting than anyone else I've been too.

chipsandgin · 03/07/2020 19:52

I’ve never really considered the age of a beauty therapist previously - other than being competent I’d hope for people skills & attention to detail.

Over the years I’ve had a few disasters (patchy spray tan, nails cut back to the quick during a pedicure, terrible painting skills with nail varnish, wonky over waxed eyebrows despite a explaining how I usually (successfully!) have them, waxing too hot leaving mild burns, asymmetrical bikini waxes, facials where they seem bored or apathetic or have terrible breath, very very poor massages...). None of these have been because of the age of the therapist, if anything most of them were with young therapists. Honestly, thinking about all of the above I’d definitely value experience over youth!!

sangrias · 03/07/2020 19:54

40s & 50s fine.
But probably not any older than that for me. Unless it's just something very standard like a leg wax.

BusySittingDown · 03/07/2020 20:00

I wouldn't care as long as they did a good job. I would presume that they were up to date with training and new treatments?

SoleBizzz · 03/07/2020 20:01

Yes! Its a none issue, surely?

Reader1984 · 03/07/2020 20:02

Yes, I would assume you were more experienced.

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/07/2020 20:02

Yes because we’d be able to chat about things that aren’t love island.

Also you’d understand the ageing face!.

Bella2020 · 03/07/2020 20:09

Absolutely! I'd rather have someone nearer to my own age. A lot of these young girls plastered with make up are off putting to me, tbh, and I feel that someone older is more likely to have experience of my skin care issues.

museumum · 03/07/2020 20:11

Yes. I feel uncomfortable with 20 year olds. I feel they are pitying me my “old” skin.

UltimateWednesday · 03/07/2020 20:12

I do and have had complete confidence in her for years.

However, recently she's become a poor advert for fillers, she's gone way overboard, which is a shame because she was an attractive mature woman. So don't overdo your own services!

Butwhhhyyyyyyy · 03/07/2020 20:14

Thank you everyone it has made me realise it's just me doubting myself then, I am planning on some more training beforehand while hopefully covid blows over.

@pickachubaby, yes I have aches and pains too so can sympathize with that, @fluffhcloudland77, I also have training with aging skin too, useful for me also.

Looks like I have no reason not to go for it, wish me luck

You're only 47! Yeh I would, and if I were allowed to express a preference, I might admit to choosing you over a 22 year old to be honest. I'm 50. I think you're not too much above the average age of customers surely?

The only thing I ever get done is a leg wax, and I go to a mother and daughter place.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 03/07/2020 20:15

Yes, absolutely. The gorgeous young ones are a bit intimidating sometimes when they’re waxing my shredded nether regions or massaging my wobbles.

Quackersandcheese3 · 03/07/2020 20:16

I definitely would go to an older beauty therapist.

KetoWinnie · 03/07/2020 20:16

yes! This!

Even though I'm happy with how I've aged, I remember putting makeup on my mum when she was no more than 45 and thinking her skin was thick and leathery. It wasn't! But it was compared to my 17 year old skin.

gardenchaos · 03/07/2020 20:17

Yes, particularly if you were an advert for your own business. The intimate waxer I see is mid fifties and amazing, she set up business after receiving disappointing waxes from young therapists who were awkward with her and uses this fact to advertise.

Mrsjayy · 03/07/2020 20:22

My friend re trained at 40 in nails at first then added other things on opened up her own shop and is now 50 and is busy and "her ladies" are missing her and can't wait for her to re open, honestly go for it I'm sure the customers will come.
