Would you use an older beauty therapist?

I'm a beauty therapist and looking to set up my own business and add fillers and permanent makeup to my resume. I have been off for 15 yrs raising DC and am ready to work now. I am currently 47 and am wondering if people would rather go to a younger therapist or would be happy to go to an older one, may just be a crisis of self really but I have to ask. Thanks

It depends on your target market I guess. I'd guess that fillers are more popular with younger (20 - 40) women, especially lip fillers. There are a lot of nurses where I work who do fillers as a side business, so there's a lot of competition.

I think you may struggle to get customers, not because of your age, but because most people probably prefer to go to a doctor/dentist/nurse to get stuff injected into their face, and there's lots of them who offer it.

Am I right in thinking you wouldn't be able to do botox, just the fillers? As I think that would also put potential customers off; they might want someone who can do both.

So I think that will make more of a deciding factor than your age tbh. Sorry to be negative!

Sound good then, @smashtastic, unfortunately not but if your ever in North Wales let me know, sounds like fillers could be a bust so will stick to beauty and makeup I think, can't wait to get started now.

I’d prefer it too.

Seriously79 · 04/07/2020 10:22

Absolutely! I'd feel more comfortable with you rather than a inexperienced young person x

PicklePig31 · 04/07/2020 10:22

I’d prefer someone older for beauty. They know what they are doing due to experience...

Botox lady is 55
Lash girl is 45
Hairdresser is 40

I’m 33 for reference...

RyanBergarasTeeth · 04/07/2020 10:24

I know this is agesist but secretly i prefer older ones as i feel they are less gossipy and more experienced than younger ones. That's from my experiences.

HelloChompy · 04/07/2020 11:06

I have only just started going to see a beauty therapist in the last 2 years (I'm 43). I have always been a bit put off by a certain type of beauty therapist... The lady I go to is only a year or so older than me and had retrained later in life. She is very well groomed but in a way that is very natural and I can relate to more. I find myself completely at ease with her and can't wait to get back to see her! I think you should go for it!

Ffsseriously · 04/07/2020 11:16

i am excactly the same 52 beauty therapist thinking of going it alone business wise. The beauty business is full of lovely young things and it can be intimidating at times, so this thread has made me feel so much better. Thank you all Smile

DameDoom · 04/07/2020 11:23

I am 48 and feel much more comfortable with a therapist in my age(ish) bracket as they are far more likely to understand the concerns I have with my skin. I would be put off going to any therapist who offered fillers though as it’s not and shouldn’t be their remit - it may even make me question their integrity. Sorry.
Stuff like hydra facials, light peels etc. would definitely gain my custom.
The lady who does my facials is in her 50’s and has beautiful skin. She wears very little make-up but is a brilliant testimony to great skin care.

Ughmaybenot · 04/07/2020 11:28

I don’t really know why it would matter.. my beauty therapist is, I believe, in her forties, I’m mid twenties, and it has never really occurred to me to consider her age at all before!
I suppose now I am thinking about it tho, I think I’d probably be more comfortable with her than with someone a similar age to me or younger, as I feel like a lot of women my age/slightly younger go in for the current trend of quite a drastic make up look and general aesthetic and that simply isn’t me.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 04/07/2020 11:33

I actually prefer my therapists to be older. I've more in common with someone my own age and they've usually got far more experience.

Llamazoom · 04/07/2020 11:48

Yes, as I’m getting older I would rather have an older lady do my treatments, young women don’t intimidate me but they do irritate me with their constant advice to microblade my eyebrows, fill my lips and call me hun. I use an older lady for Botox and fillers, she’s a part time GP too, she’s professional and very stylish herself. I don’t want to look like the worlds oldest love island contestant which seems to be the beauty ideal of many younger beauty therapists.

Vicliz24 · 04/07/2020 11:53

Absolutely I would in fact I deliberately choose someone nearer my own age as I wouldn't subscribe to the younger women's idea of beauty. I want to look the best version of myself not the current ideal of the younger groups.

OryxNotCrake · 04/07/2020 11:56

I’d prefer a more mature beauty therapist tbh. I don’t feel that the young, very glamorous and polished ones necessarily understand the challenges of getting older.

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/07/2020 12:00

You just don’t get older therapists a lot but this is the time we need them the most.

mrsjackrussell · 04/07/2020 12:07

My beauty therapist trained in her 50s and she is fabulous. Totally into her job and I wouldn't go anywhere else now. I'm 49 and she makes me feel so comfortable. Iv been to younger therapists but I haven't felt comfortable. It may have something to do with me being disabled.

Sarahbeans · 04/07/2020 12:08

Don't mind what age you are. My only deal breaker is not having someone who smokes. It's horrible smelling it on their breath when they're doing your eyebrows.

Apart from that, I'm easy going.

BobFleming · 04/07/2020 12:11

I would go by recommendation and (more importantly) what products you use.

I have never had fillers and would never consider them from a beauty therapist, no matter how good.

My dentist does my botox.

GracieLane · 04/07/2020 12:19

In general people get a lot more treatments once they are more established in their lives and careers, have got past the young children stage if they have kids, and are no longer paying for car payments and saving for mortgages. Yes there are the young crowd who still mostly live with parents and are spending their pay check more freely, but these are not the people getting Botox, fillers, permanent makeup. That's more 35/40+ so will likely feel much more comfortable with somebody around their own age. I know I would!

morriseysquif · 04/07/2020 12:24

I'd prefer actually. Good luck!

Mnhealth202020 · 04/07/2020 12:25

It’s not your age that’s the problem it’s your inexperience. I certainly wouldn’t get filler from someone just starting out and I wouldn’t recommend that others do either

Ffsseriously · 04/07/2020 13:04

@Mnhealth202020 i totally agree and I dont agree with non medical doing injectables. There is quite a campaign within the beauty industry for more regulation. We in the industry are fed up with the day course queens doing nails dermaplaning, when lots og us have studied for years to get our qualifications. Not saying this is you OP at all just a bit of a tangent.

TeddyGizmo · 04/07/2020 13:06

Never thought about the age.
As long as she does a good job and doesn't over charge, I don't care.

UnicornAndSparkles · 04/07/2020 15:00

I absolutely would. Often age equals experience.

Good luck!

igotmyreddressontonight · 04/07/2020 17:35

Of course, go for it! It doesn't make any difference to me at all what age you are as long as you're good at your job. I'm mid 20's so quite young myself if that makes any difference.
