Would you use an older beauty therapist?

I'm a beauty therapist and looking to set up my own business and add fillers and permanent makeup to my resume. I have been off for 15 yrs raising DC and am ready to work now. I am currently 47 and am wondering if people would rather go to a younger therapist or would be happy to go to an older one, may just be a crisis of self really but I have to ask. Thanks

Of course I would but I would only use a qualified nurse or dentist for fillers.

Butwhhhyyyyyyy · 03/07/2020 20:32

I think some of my doubt comes as I have bells palsy and one side of my face is slightly weaker and I think it would put people off, sorry to drip feed, have been rold i am a very good therapist though :)

I am mid 40s, I would rather see someone my own age TBH.

TheFairyCaravan · 03/07/2020 20:38

I already do. Mine's 49, the same age as me. I feel more comfortable with her than I would with a really young woman tbh

MoltonSilver · 03/07/2020 20:39

If you had cataracts and had a tremor in your hand I'd think twice but otherwise I wouldn't care what age you are.

From the title of your post I was expecting you to be well past retirement.

Mrsjayy · 03/07/2020 20:43

I don't get waxed but if I did I think I would be more comfortable with somebody my own ageish looking at my ladybits!

googledontknow · 03/07/2020 20:59

Yes I would!
I don't have many beauty treatments, but when I do out I get sad/put off by all the very young women who have had multiple surgery's and fillers/Botox etc.
I'm not into all that stuff and I feel sorry for them, they feel sorry for me Cos I'm so old and I haven't looked after myself with all the treatments that are available, it's all quite soul-destroying!

IAmMeThisIsI · 03/07/2020 21:05

Personally I much prefer older beauty professionals. Only reason is because I know when I was younger I was extremely shallow and judgmental. As I've grown older I'm more tolerant and empathetic and understanding. Also more experienced IMO.

The Bell's palsy wouldn't matter a jot @Butwhhhyyyyyyy it's the well groomed and professional person that is relatable that would make me become a client.

Thanks again the response is what I hoped for, and thank you @gardenchaos, round where I am I don't know any therapists over 30 so was unsure but this make me think I will have lots of people come to me due to my ahem mature years.

Definitely! Wouldn't bother me. As long as you could see 😂

Smashtastic · 03/07/2020 21:33

Gosh I'd love this, tell me your in the Nottinghamshire area? I'd like to be your first client!
I'm sick of 19 year olds and hit and miss service where intend up with a different beautician every time!

Livpool · 03/07/2020 21:47

I wouldn't care less

LolaSmiles · 03/07/2020 21:51

I couldn't care less how old they are as long as they are groomed and not a terrible advert for their own services.

e.g. someone who has overdone the tangerine tan/fillers/Botox wouldn't inspire confidence in me as I'd be worried that their idea of 'normal' is different to mine. That's separate to their age though.

I can say 100 % honestly that this would not put me off in the slightest. It wouldn't even come in to it. Good luck to you.

Rocaille · 03/07/2020 22:11

Yes, definitely.

Best of luck with your new venture.

I am over 50, my regular beauty therapist is mid 40s, my hairdresser late 40s I live in a typical market town with many salons and I have been a loyal customer for about 10 years. If either didn’t come back after Covid 19 I would be choosing my next therapist on recommendation and then from how comfortable I feel with them and how good they are.

For example I like having my eyebrows threaded my lady doesn’t do this but another therapist in the salon does and she is really good, no pain at all, but when she was on a maternity break I popped along to a nail bar near my office. The pain was incredible and I didn’t finish the session. What I am trying to say is it is what you can offer that counts not your age.

ProtectAll · 03/07/2020 22:37

Just seen your update about Bell’s palsy that’s wouldn’t be a problem at all for me, I have treatments for me and to make me feel good, I have no interest on what others think and don’t judge people on how they look.

Although I don’t like lip fillers on anyone, general botox is fine.

Pipandmum · 03/07/2020 22:42

Absolutely. The one I have now is 30 and she is definitely of the wax everything brigade, whereas I don't remove anything other than underarm hair. It took a while fur me to feel comfortable about our differences in grooming styles but we joke about it now (or would, if I ever get to see her again)! But I'd be totally happy with someone closer to my age as I think they will have some of the same issues: dry skin, wrinkles, thinning hair, post kids body...

Eaumyword · 03/07/2020 22:58

I would be completely unfazed by your age, in fact it would make me feel comfortable and your Bell's is fine too, we've all got flaws past 40. What I would want is enough energy to give me a darn good massage!
I would be worried about having anything injectable with anyone who wasn't a nurse if I'm honest. I've not had anything yet but am seriously considering getting a tiny bit of botox soon!

areallthenamesusedup · 03/07/2020 23:01

would positively prefer someone older.
I would assume the older the more experienced and thus potentially better...reverse age discrimination Blush

Porridgeoat · 03/07/2020 23:05

I’d prefer it

Chochito · 03/07/2020 23:07

My hairdresser is 48. My waxing lady is probably 60; she is GREAT. I choose based on expertise and customer satisfaction, not age.

Floraflower3 · 03/07/2020 23:12

I absolutely wouldn't mind using an older beauty therapist.

I wouldn't use a beauty therapist for fillers or BOTOX though. Please do think carefully about whether to train in fillers or not.

There are campaigns ongoing for these treatments to be performed by medical professionals only which may mean you can't practice. There are serious complications which can occur with injectables and only a prescriber can legally use dissolving agents/has the experience to manage these complications.
