Does this wide coat lapel make one look old?

Burberry Cranston Coat

I read a review that says she returned it because the exagerrated lapel made her look old.

Thoughts?

It's a classic. I guess it depends on the wearer and how they wear it.

Terralee · 01/07/2020 17:14

I like it.

Tillytess · 01/07/2020 18:12

I love a wide lapel, I think it is a very stylish and classy look.

RuthW · 01/07/2020 18:26

I wouldn't wear it and I'm 52.

My main thought is to wonder how a coat lapel can make you look old. I assume the reviewer thinks the word means 'out of date' or even 'unattractive', in which case their opinion isn't worth worrying about, surely?

Me, I find a wide lapel can be quite flattering, but also draughty in winter unless you're prepared to fiddle around with a scarf.

I wouldn't wear it, but I think that's just my personal taste, rather than age related. I'm 36. I have a good friend who is very stylish, a year or so younger than me, and she wears a coat like this. In fact, it might be exactly this coat, but in a different colour. She definitely wears Burberry coats.

No, it’s pretty classic. I think you’d need to be fairly tall to carry it off, that’s all.

NHSEA · 01/07/2020 19:39

I had a midi length camel coat in that style in the early eighties. I thought it was marvellous. I bought it from Wallis which was the place to go for stylish winter coats back in the day!

I don't think anything will make everyone universally look old. Surely it depends how old you already look Confused

I think it's a bit dated, I know on mumsnet and often real life a trench is a 'classic' but i rarely see anybody in one and also think they're hard to pull off, you have to dress to wear it, not just put it on over your existing outfit, IMO.

My DM often wears a wide lapel coat very similar to that(aged 70) and it suits her, but she is a very prim and mature dresser.

Have you got the coat and are worried OP? I think it's fine?

AirDuser · 02/07/2020 00:52

No, I can get it for a discount so I'm tempted but tbh, I have never had a proper coat (always in puffers or leather jackets) so I really don't know how the lapel width will make or break the look, tbh.

I have broad shoulders, 170cm, size 14.

I love it!

1forAll74 · 02/07/2020 01:12

It's a very plain and awful old fashioned looking coat, looking worse with that bunched up belt.

Mawbags · 02/07/2020 07:29

IME only the dainty can get away with that. I have broad shoulders and bought something years ago and looked too boxy

Broad shoulders needs a softer drape and no defined shoulder seams or lapels

How do you look in shirts?

AirDuser · 02/07/2020 09:11

Button down white shirts are ok on me. I think because I have a small chest.

I love it and would definitely wear it and wouldn't even consider that it would make me look old. I love a wide lapel. As a pear shape they balance me out.
