Help me choose a dress

While the milestone party has been postponed until further notice, I have lost weight this lockdown, feeling fiiine and am fantasising/shooting the breeze.

So i'm tall (now!) slim with sizeable boobs, mid 30s. Buying all to return most still feels an eye wateringly expensive way of shopping and of course I'd rather be trying dresses on in a shop but there we are. I've just looked on The Outnet and John Lewis so any other ideas welcomed.

What do you think of these dresses?

I’m in my 30s and wouldn’t wear any of those. I think the styles are dated and the black formal ones are so formal/corporate, way too much for a restaurant meal even if it is a fancy one. Maje, self portrait, needle and thread would all be good brands to look at.

Tartyflette · 29/06/2020 08:49

I think the dresses were lovely but extremely formal, apart from the last one, which i also liked a lot.
Phase Eight also has several lovely dresses that might fit the bill without shouting 'Grosvenor House Hotel corporate do'

To give some examples. There are many, many more. Happy hunting!

MonsteraCheeseplant · 29/06/2020 08:59

I'm afraid I didn't like any of the dresses in All Saints, Maje or self portrait.

This shimmer dress is nice, as is this navy sequin although maybe too glitzy considering.
Ok, I like all the dresses on Folkster.

I do have a black tie even next year I could wear one to. Grin
Not sure I can buy two expensive dresses though

I think the beaded ones are lovely but look like you're going to a "Great Gatsby" theme party (in fact I went to one, and wore an EBay version which was about £15). The last one is much more tall slim shapely 30-something, plus you'll have enough money left over for shoes and a bag!

MonsteraCheeseplant · 29/06/2020 09:02

That's not really my style Tarty. The Scuba one is closest although i don't often wear pillar box red, i'm not sure it suits me.

Some gorgeous dresses in the Harrodsburg sale, some bargains too.

Or something completely different.

No. 4 for me.

unicornparty · 29/06/2020 09:30

I'm mid 30s and wouldn't wear any of those sorry. They are the kind of dress my glamorous nanny would wear in her 70s. I'd look for something younger and glamorous.

LadyFlumpalot · 29/06/2020 09:50

I'm not very stylish at all so apologies if I get this completely wrong- but you seem to like the 1920's beaded style dresses, there are a few less formal but still very glitzy ones on ASOS

I know they were a bit ubiquitous for a while (and possibly still are), but Virgo's Lounge still do some lovely dresses.

Although the loveliest ones are sold out Sad

MonsteraCheeseplant · 29/06/2020 09:57

@LadyFlumpalot - i'm clearly not very stylish either Grin
I do love those dresses you linked to. How did you find them? I find with ASOS, that i'm totally overwhelmed with hundreds of pages of dresses. Did you use filters or search words to narrow them down?
So the first one is really beautiful but I worry i'd look a bit naked at first in photos especially? The second one is fab but the feathers might push it over the top and the last one is stunning but I have big boobs and think the dress and I might struggle.

I'd hope that I would look different than a granny in the options i've found so far though!

They're a bit glam older lady to me.. If you're mid thirties you can definitely go more fun and trendy.

Have you looked at Rixo? Less spangly but very cool and more wearable

LadyFlumpalot · 29/06/2020 10:01

@MonsteraCheeseplant - I just googled "20's beaded dress" and they came up in the shopping tab of Google, I'm glad you like them!

Krong · 29/06/2020 10:01

Stay away from Phase Eight until you're in your 50s.

JesmondDene · 29/06/2020 10:03

Harrodsburg...where did that come from....Harrods haha

gopuff · 29/06/2020 10:13

I'm mid 30s & would wear Rixo & SP etc usually but if I was going to a family wedding/event (Greek & Irish) then that wouldn't cut it & would need proper grown up long dress & glitzy dress. Think the Oscars, I love it because how often do you get the opportunity to go big. You can style them so they don't look so mature.

gopuff · 29/06/2020 10:20

these

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 29/06/2020 10:42

I think @GoBackToPartyCity's option is great - it has the very grown-up glamorous beading of your first choices, but because it's short it still feels fun and young.

lockdownalli · 29/06/2020 15:08

I absolutely love the Adrianna Papell.

OP if you can pull it off, wear it!

oohnicevase · 29/06/2020 15:10

They are a bit old lady cruise ship .. I wouldn't wear any of the sequinned ones unless it was a super glam xmas dinner but each to their own .
Have a look at lipsy @next for ideas . In fact there are some evening dresses in their clearance section similar to those if that's what you like .

MonsteraCheeseplant · 29/06/2020 15:44

old lady cruise ship ouch Grin

OP posts:
MonsteraCheeseplant · 29/06/2020 15:45

I'll have a look at Lipsy but don't want to look cheap and I gotta say, in the past, some of their stuff has looked cheap.

OP posts:
CorianderLord · 29/06/2020 15:52

Sorry I think the first four are all something a 60yo would wear on a cruise and the last is something you wear out to dinner with mates
