What should I do with my hair?

I currently have two foot brown hair. It's thick and good condition. When hairdressers open I'm having it cut off and sent to the princesses charity for wigs.
So my hair will be chin length. Do I get it coloured? What style should I have? It's got to be low maintenance but other then that I guess I can do anything. I'm turning 40 and guess I need to grow up a bit.

So many factors to consider: face shape, complexion, how easy maintenance you want it...

A good hairdresser will be able to give you a good idea. In the meantime, look at hairstyles on the likes of Pinterest, or even celebrity hairstyles you like, from people with similar hair types to you. Then take those to the hairdresser as a starting point.

Face shape, long. Complexion is white but dark (almost Mediterranean in the summer). I'm rubbish with hair and haven't had it cut for two years hence the stupid long length. I'm now trying to get a hold on my life after a terrible two years and what to do something that looks great, not meh.

Be very careful of an all over dye on your hair....cos that equals roots and maintenance... unless you fancy 6 weekly trips to the hairdressers.

NotMeNoNo · 26/06/2020 20:54

IME of thick hair, low maintenance is 1. Very short 2 . Long enough to tie back or 3. Style that it naturally falls (or springs) into if you let dry naturally. For me a chin length bob that needed proper blow drying was the worst.

Curly or straight hair?

Howcanwehelp · 26/06/2020 23:07

Dead straight, I was thinking of ombre colour but think that might be for young people only. What's a shaggy Bob called, do people still have them?

Blunt Bob?

Good on ya for donating your hair - the law of karma will give you a gorgeous new style. Grin

ChinWhiskers · 27/06/2020 08:02

Why?! I'd keep it. Your hair won't grow like that again due to menopause. Make a monetary donation instead.

Howcanwehelp · 27/06/2020 09:53

Chinwhiskers, I started to grow my hair to see what it was like. 2 years ago it was at a length I was happy with. Then followed two of the most terrible years and cutting my hair was more than I could face.
I'm trying to get back on top of things and I see a haircut as a positive step forward. As well as a practical move as it's not very professional or easy care.

Blunt Bob is out, thanks for the picture so I know what one is. I don't want a fringe so something softer. I guess the modern take of a Rachel if something like that exists?

It's lovely that you are donating it for wigs.

On the other hand, if @ChinWhiskers is right, maybe have a lovely wig to wear after you hit the menopause 😀.

Would a longish pixie be too scary?

This sort of thing

Howcanwehelp · 27/06/2020 13:44

I don't think I have the head shape or face for a pixie, think it's an amazing look but don't think I'm that brave Grin

A layered bob

Thank you, that's what I mean I guess

why do women hit a certain age & think they should have short hair

hair is ageless its what frames your face so go with what suits you as opposed to what you think is appropriate according to age

Suzie6789 · 27/06/2020 17:25

Be careful If asking for a layered bob, it has the potential to be mullet like. As I found out.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 27/06/2020 17:27

Why on earth would ombre just be for the young?

Standrewsschool · 27/06/2020 17:32

Highlights rather than all single colour?

I agree, choose something for your face shape, rather than age. My hair has also grown, and I’m looking for a new look.
