I am naturally a mid to dark brown colour but with lots of grey so over the past year I have been having some blond highlights in the hope that I wouldn't have to have my hair coloured as often, however this isn't the case and I am not regretting the blond and really want to go back to a mid/dark brown without any red undertones.

Can I purchase a box dye in mid brown or do you think it will turn the blond red or even worse green?

Should I wait it out until I can get a salon? Any help appreciated! Thanks

I'd get a purple toner to neutralise the red tones
Leave it on for half an hour

Thanks @Veterinari I'll try that. I think it's all the online meetings, all I do is look at myself and pick myself apart!!

If you put brown over blonde it will turn green. You must put a ginger or reddish shade on first and wash this off, then apply the brown shade over that. This acts as a filler colour and helps the brown to not look green and to last for longer. You may be safe just using a 5.3 as the .3 is a gold tone so it may have enough warm tones in it to come out a warm brown. You will have to put an ashier colour on next time as I wouldnt advise going straight from blonde to an ash brown as it will look flat and possibly greeny tones. Warm brown is far more flattering.

Thanks @Mojitomogul good advice I am worried about the green! Would a semi perm red tone be ok then a medium brown do you think? Tia!

I’d honestly have a hair dresser take you back to brown first then use box dyes after.

Thanks @bluntness I'm just impatient but that's exactly what my sister said!

I've taken myself back to brown many times with a semi red/ginger then a brown. It should turn out fine, just really saturate the hair with colour and apply evenly, dont condition after the red, unless you will be applying on separate days. Good luck Smile

That's interesting @Mojitomogul as I've read that a lot. Should I use a permanent red colour or a semi before the brown? Thanks

Semi definitely. X

itbemay1 · 21/06/2020 15:56

I did it! Semi perm in light brown, pleased with result just needs a deep condition now. Thanks all
