My Recovery from Major Hair Loss

Hi everyone :-)

I just wanted to share with you my recovery from major hair loss post a bad chemical treatment (brazillian blow dry). The last year has felt like a nightmare regarding my hair - approx 50% of my hair fell out. Even went to see a specialist who suggested it was female pattern hairloss and recommended treatment worth £800 (no thank you!)

I was sure it was from the blow dry, i had a really itchy scalp the first month and then clumps were falling out from the root everytime I had a shower.

Anyway - incase this has happened to anyone else I wanted to let you know there is hope. I managed halt the loss and it is now beginning to grow back, having said that because my hair is now so uneven (down to my waist and then 1-2 inches from my scalp) it leaves lots of feathery/frizzy bits at the top that I cannot style for the life of me. Any adv on that would be grateful. I am confident that it will begin to grow much longer over the next year though thank goodness.

So, without further ado here are my tips:

Wash your hair only once a week after applying a concoction of castor oil and sweet almond oil mask over night.

Warm the almond oil and castor oil in a microwave for 30seconds, let it slightly cool then apply all over massaging your scalp.

Wash the following day with Watermans hairgrown shampoo and conditioner - leave conditioner on as a mask for 20 mins then wash out.

Eat biotin tablets every single day.

You need to seriously stick to this, I began seeing much less hair loss and true hair growth within a month. 8 months down the line my hair is noticeably growing.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar and have some extra tips?

Thanks!

The thing is, if your hair was damaged through a chemical treatment, then you would expect a spontaneous recovery anyway, as there was no systemic reason for its loss in the first place. I’m really glad you feel this is working for you, but as someone who has been more or less bald for all my adult life, I’ve tried every treatment going, alternative and medical. None worked, or only worked with such unpleasant side effects they were worse than nothing. Sometimes it just is what it is, and chasing snake oil is both expensive and mentally debilitating.

Sorry to hear that! :( Yes mine is related to a chemical treatment, and hope that it would've improved without any of the added treatments, though for a long time it felt like nothing was happening. I do have another friend who has alopecia who tried the same treatments as me however and did see some progress. I suppose everyone loses hair for different reasons and there isn't one hard or fast rule for recovery. Just wondering if anybody else has seen any recovery or progress with products or suggestions out there. I do also think that my hairloss is related to the BBD -however this has also never been confirmed, apparently this treatment couldn't possibly cause hair loss that that is not a side affect - however my hairloss began to happen a month after so I think it's too much of a coincidence for it to have been anything else.

The hairloss clinic assured me it couldn't have been that and put it downt o stress and genetics, but now it's growing back im glad i didn't try any of their very expensive treatments

I have been having hair loss for the last 2 years, tried everything, even seeing a dermatologist, and had a scalp biopsy, he says it isn't female pattern hair loss, and in february said it will have grown back by the end of this summer,it hasn't and still losing some,
Had Biotin, still taking it high strength, sprays, special shampoos etc,he thinks it is stress related, but like you i wonder if it is chemical-related,as used some dye for roots and it started just after that
Really fed up now
It got worse after taking some HRT, and my daughters is shedding after taking HRT

quarentini · 19/06/2020 23:38

My hair was falling out for years.
I've not dyed it during lockdown and it's stopped falling out.
I'm now embracing the grey

princessTiasmum · 20/06/2020 22:34

quarentini has you hair grown back then, what you lost?

quarentini · 20/06/2020 23:06

@princessTiasmum I'm getting lots of new growth and my hair has stopped falling out, especially when washed and brushed.

princessTiasmum · 21/06/2020 21:31

Quarentino i have had nothing on my hair since it started falling out, but not grown at all, and now the front im getting bald patches,
I have a telephone consultation tomorrow with the dermatologist, should have been thursday but don't know if he forgot or didn't have time
My daughters hair started shedding after starting HRT he said it would have stopped, by Easter it hasn't
Mine also got worse after re starting HRT, Hmm

Porridgeoat · 21/06/2020 21:34

Yes give up the contraceptive pill. Made a 10% difference

quarentini · 21/06/2020 22:15

@princessTiasmum I'm sorry to hear that you are still suffering.
I can't attribute mine to HRT because I never took it for various reasons.
I honestly hope you get some help

EmeliaLily · 22/06/2020 11:42

@quarentini @princessTiasmum - scary to think that this can potentially happen from hair dye as well. It just goes to show that adding this stuff is quite unnatural and can be a shock to our bodies :( I for one am never going to do any dye or chemical treatment again..

Really upsetting to hear this is happening to you all still! Hoping we can get some more info with this thread about what has worked for some, shame it isn't one rule for all :(

Well had telephone consultation with dermatologist who still insists it is caused by stress, could be had a lot of stress the last 3 years really,
I have been asked to send pics by email of latest loss ,on the top of my head,so daughter will take photos,
I have seen lots of videos on you tube of hair coming back after all sorts of treatments, especially essential oils

Porridgeoat · 24/06/2020 23:51

Sorry 100% different. Pill caused my hair loss so stopping it resolved

princessTiasmum · 26/06/2020 11:12

Porridgeot the pill is a hormone isn't it? i was on the pill for years, then HRT off HRT for a few years and back on it around the same time off first hair loss, so quite a few things happening at the same time,so really could be any of them
The hair loss got much worse after a different type of HRT early last year, so could be hormonal!
Sent pics of scalp to dermatologist yesterday, he is ringing me back today, when i spoke to him this time he said the Pandemic could be making it worse through stress, no i doubt that
Although i did realise this morning that i am quite stressed.due to a familt situation, but i don't think totally down to stress, but stress does affect hormones doesn't it, so who knows,
Now waiting for call back
Looking at me from the front i look to have a mop of hair,
Will update when had phone call

Porridgeoat · 29/06/2020 20:13

Fingers crossed

princessTiasmum · 29/06/2020 23:54

Still waiting for phone call, i did have one which came up privte no, mayb him,but hands were wet so couldn't swipe phone to answer, and no call since, so will email him and see if i get a reply, as i know the Drs are busy so won't phone
Can't understand it really as it did seem to be getting thicker, and now lost more overall
