Mum2beSept2020 · 17/06/2020 18:32

Following as first time mum too

Emmagen · 17/06/2020 18:32

I did. I have heard things about clothes having things sprayed on them in store, no idea if that is true or not but new clothes do have an odd smell to them and didn't want that on my baby. Don't normally bother with my own though!

Justmuddlingalong · 17/06/2020 18:34

I wash all new clothes before they're worn.

Aquamarine1029 · 17/06/2020 18:37

Manufactured clothing has horrible chemicals sprayed on it before shipping to prevent mould and insect infestation. I definitely washed everything before putting it on my children.

Thisismytimetoshine · 17/06/2020 18:38

Yes.

BeforeIPutOnMyMakeup · 17/06/2020 18:39

I didn't mainly in case I had to take them back to swap sizes.

Funny thing is I should have as I have a crap immune system so can get rashes and sores from new clothes, but my LO has a better immune system than average.

TwilightPeace · 17/06/2020 18:40

I washed everything first, in FairySmile

Please do, with any new clothing. I've worked in retail at several high st stores and you wouldn't believe how they're treated. Clothes arrive in containers and are sprayed with pesticides and chemicals to keep them looking starched and fresh during shipping. Some of clothes absolutely stink when opened in their packaging from the dyes. During the day clothes fall off hangers on to the dusty shop floors, are touched by several people and some items on display are even from peoples returned items, so they may have worn them in their own homes. I would wash everything first but especially for your newborn.

PinkBlossom4 · 17/06/2020 18:51

Yes definitely as you don’t know what’s on them. I used to love doing it, putting all of the tiny clothes out to dry makes it all seem real ...maybe just me though!

I've worked in stores too, and unpacking new clothes was the absolute worst. The smell of the chemicals on the clothes was gagging to me, especially because they've been wrapped in plastic for god knows how long.

Just Google "chemicals on new clothes." That will tell you everything you need to know.

Alderaan · 17/06/2020 18:55

I didn't bother. Two kids. No issues.

PopcornPugs · 17/06/2020 18:56

I washed and ironed everything, even muslin cloths, it was the first and last time they saw an iron

helia · 17/06/2020 18:59

Yes. I wash everything before it's worn.

jamandtonic · 17/06/2020 19:03

I didn't bother to start with. But then I discovered that some things do shrink a bit when washed, and if you have stuff that you are waiting for them to grow into, it's a bit of a waste Grin

Rightmovenewbie · 17/06/2020 19:03

Always !!

dobbyssoc · 17/06/2020 19:04

I didn't but I defo would with the current climate

happymummy12345 · 17/06/2020 19:04

I didn't

hippobump · 17/06/2020 19:04

I asked this a couple of weeks ago. I have ended up washing everything, but I'm sure it's not the end of the world if you don't get chance.

It took me 3 days to get everything washed, dried, ironed and sorted into sizes (bigger sizes stored for later). It was a good way to realise just how much we had, so much more than I realised!

SummerHouse · 17/06/2020 19:08

I would. I am generally very slack but this is just one thing I did do. I don't do it now just for babies.

GrouchyKiwi · 17/06/2020 19:12

I wash all new clothes, bedding, towels etc for everyone. There's dust and all sorts on them. It's much nicer to have fresh, clean things.

Cecilia2016 · 17/06/2020 19:14

I washed everything

firstimemamma · 17/06/2020 19:24

I wash everything new once before use.

HarryHarry · 17/06/2020 19:29

Yes, always. They are treated with chemicals to keep them looking fresh in the shop.

Horehound · 17/06/2020 19:31

Yep, I think they have formaldehyde in them really not good.
