If you're in your 40s, what sort of jeans do you wear?

I dont wear jeans very often, and only for running around in, not going out. I usually wear skinny jeans but I'm aware they have been around forever. I need some new jeans and was wondering what style to go for. I'm size 10-12, apple shape, fairly big butt, decent legs

What are you all wearing? And will 'mom jeans' look horrendous if you're not 16 and skinny as hell?

@DrMadelineMaxwell, snap! I’ve also bought some straight leg ones from Lands End. Skinny jeans are definitely not for me.

MrsJamin · 10/06/2020 17:03

Mom jeans only work if you're not a mum age, IMHO. Otherwise you just look frumpy! Another vote for topshop Jamie jeans, but I'm a pearshape, small waist, big bum and thighs from cycling so we are different shapes.

GrumpyHoonMain · 10/06/2020 17:06

I prefer mid rise straight leg but I like the high waisted culotte shape too

I gave up skinny jeans a few years ago I was so bored of them. I now wear slim boyfriend from J Crew, and a straight leg from Muji.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 10/06/2020 17:27

Ooh good thread! I need a few pairs of new jeans and am in the right age bracket of you, OP, but I reallly have no clue about how to style jeans, or even the jargon about each jeans style.

Would anyone be kind enough to post photographs to illustrate what they mean?

lindyloo57 · 10/06/2020 18:34

I trying new styles, have been wearing skinnys forever, have yet to find looser fit that suit me, they look frumpy and big on me, I'm 5ft3 and 9 stone so being petite could be why a looser style don't suit, I have just ordered 2 pair straight Jean's from boden, never tried them before, here's hoping they suit me.

HoHoHolyCow · 10/06/2020 18:48

Diesel jeans - either super skinny low rise or straight leg low rise. I hate wearing high waisted jeans - they feel so restrictive - and Diesel are the only low rise ones I can find at the minute (I buy from eBay so they are not too ££).

My only other pair are mid rise skinnies from H&M.

BusterGonad · 10/06/2020 18:59

Skinnies for me too. I know they're probably not that trendy anymore but I like them. They go with everything. Also I'm tall so if they aren't long enough they look like they're suppose to be short.

PersonaNonGarter · 10/06/2020 19:48

High rise Mom jeans, cropped.

I agree with @NikeDeLaSwoosh that they make everything just look more now. Tuck older tops in and wear with a chain necklace. Et voila, Summer 2020.

For extra style points wear a headband and huggie earrings.

Ignore the pp’s thing about age. Urgh, why do women do that to each other?

frostedviolets · 10/06/2020 19:59

Jeans have honestly never suited me.
Except for one pair of falmers which were really lovely and very flattering.
They were acid wash pale blue and stretchy with flowers.
I loved them so much!

Have never been able to replicate before or since!
They just don’t suit.

I’m an hourglass/have a nipped waist but with a big belly and backside!

Jeans are never flattering on me.
In fact, most trousers are not at all flattering on me unless they are straight and somewhat tight/skinny.

myomy · 10/06/2020 20:12

I suit boot cut and found them the most comfortable jean but haven't had them on in years about 25 years.

I wear mid waist skinny most days.

Are bootcut and boyfriend back in?

coronabeer23 · 10/06/2020 20:22

M&S straight either rolled up or I have some short ones which finish above the ankle. They’re amazing. I also have some skinnies for real casual with flip flops and also with boots. Also some cropped wide legs so pretty much anything!

BlackSwan · 10/06/2020 20:47

I’ve just ordered straight leg ones because I’m done with skinny legs which reveal the shape of my bum. My bum isn’t symmetrical. One cheek is more pert than the other. But, I am a size 25/26. So I’m skinny fat I guess. Sigh...

Ellapaella · 10/06/2020 20:58

@CurlyhairedAssassin here's some of mine, pics were ones I put on the 'what am I wearing' thread.
1st pair cropped high waist Levi's, 2nd pair relaxed fit from Hush and 3rd pair Mom jeans (I'm not so keen on these generally but this pair from Bershka are the best I've found).

If you're in your 40s, what sort of jeans do you wear?

I got rid of skinny jeans a few years ago, except one pair, which I have never worn again. I wear:

High waisted barrel leg - Whistles
Cropped Levi’s 501s
Levi’s balloon legs

When I did wear skinny jeans, the best ones I found were the All Saints “Stilt” jeans, which are high waisted.

I’m pretty hippy, but with a small waist, so a high waist is good on my shape.

Tada, a jeans style explained guide: www.johnlewis.com/content/fashion/women/new-season-jeans-trends

I bought the Kin ones in this and am really pleased with them.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 11/06/2020 06:56

Thankyou, really helpful!

My feet get cold easily so on a cool day I would want to wear trainer/plimsoll type things with jeans, what looks best? I honestly don’t know.

AnnaNimmity · 11/06/2020 07:03

I've gone back to skinny now. For a couple of years I flirted with barrel jeans, mom jeans etc, but I think skinny suits me the best - also a size 10 tall but straight up and down rather than apple. I don't wear high waisted as I think they make my bum look bigger! I go for mid rise.

MulberryPeony · 11/06/2020 07:53

High waisted skinnies (next or M&S for short length) or more recently next high rise ankle length for a more modern fit seem to suit me. Still got some lovely bootcut and skinny flares in the wardrobe for when the mood takes me. Really want some wide legs but every pair I’ve tried have made me too too heavy except cords.

Ellapaella · 11/06/2020 08:27

Curly I wear all of mine with trainers/pumps.

QuentinWinters · 11/06/2020 08:32

I bought embrace high waisted skinnies from h&m a while back and love them because they don't gape at the waist. I'm an hourglass and this is usually a problem

Gwenhwyfar · 11/06/2020 21:54

I'm stuck with skinnies as nothing else looks normal any more, but my legs look like sausages in them.

1forAll74 · 12/06/2020 14:11

I don't wear jeans, The last jeans I owned, were bought in the mid 1970 era when I lived in the USA for three years, and they were flared jeans, all the rage then.

I just remember, that years ago, Cilla Black was on tv being interviewed, and she said that she always always, flies to New York several times a year, and buys her jeans from one particular shop there. !!

SistemaAddict · 12/06/2020 16:06

I quite like my mint velvet ones. They are black and soft and don't fall down. I doubt they fit after 3 months of lockdown with no exercise Sad
