What do you think to this dress?

I’m 5’ and this is from Next petites. I’m pushing 60 and have just returned two dresses from ASOS. The first one was a little similar to this Next one in style but had sleeves puffed from the shoulder which made me look even shorter than I am and a bit like a mini Henry VIII.

I’ve not worn a dress since my DDs wedding 8 years ago as I’m not a dress person but I’d like to be. I would have to wear flat shoes because of a joint problem so I can’t rely on heels to add a bit of height. Thanks.

What do you think to this dress?

"like a min henry vIII"!!!!!!! This has me chuckling away!

dudsville · 08/06/2020 15:03

Oh, and I think it's a pretty dress. I'm not one for knowing if it would suit you.

AuntieBiotic · 08/06/2020 15:13

Thanks Dudsville I also have no idea If it will suit me but am going on the basis that the Henry VIII one looked nice apart from the very puffed sleeves which stopped just above elbow length and made me look unnecessarily wide shouldered. I really don’t have a clue about shape or style for dresses. I know what I like on taller women but it’s very difficult to find things that might work for a very small older woman.

It’s pretty but there’s a fair bit of fabric in the dress. It might need a belt or it could swamp you.

JudyGemstone · 08/06/2020 15:56

It's fine but a bit blah. Is it for a special occasion or day to day?

I'd wear this sort of thing to work.

AuntieBiotic · 08/06/2020 16:12

It’s day to day Judy. timetest I know what you mean. The Henry VIII was a similar style but didn’t swamp me. It just made me look wider across the shoulders due to the puff sleeves. But this one has normal shoulders so it could work.

I have an almost identical one from New Look! I love it but there’s elastic in the sleeves which annoyingly is a bit tight. I wear it with Doc Martens.

Ginfilledcats · 08/06/2020 16:18

Would be fine worn with trainers or boots, but with flat court shoes or ballet bumps would look naff.

Lovely dress!

Nosuchluck · 08/06/2020 16:39

I'm not very keen on it. I'm 51 and five foot one and have just a lot of success with H&M dresses.

Fidgety31 · 08/06/2020 17:17

It’s shapeless - looks like a maternity dress .

heartpyjamas · 08/06/2020 17:29

@nosuchluck
Which dresses have bought from H&M that have been successful please?

theseriousmoonlight · 08/06/2020 17:37

I like it. I'm 5ft10 though but hopefully they will also do it in their tall range.

AuntieBiotic · 08/06/2020 18:19

Nosuchluck thanks. I’ve just looked at H&Ms petite section but there are only about 3 dresses in all and one of those only comes in plus sizes. I think because I’d need to wear the dress I linked with something trainer-like I’m not going to order it. I love that look but not on me at nearly 60. I’m at a dead end finding nice petite summer trousers too so at the moment I’m going to be stuffed when it warms up.

I don't like it, sorry. It looks shapeless and drab to me.
