Talk to me about socks please

I tend to buy bog standard multipack (men's) socks from the supermarket but pretty much every pair now has holes in the ball of the foot.

I'm wondering if this is just inevitable or whether it's worth paying more to get socks that last longer? And if so what - Merino? Bamboo? I don't really want thicker ones....

I am obsessed with socks. The DC tease me about it, then steal them.

Yes, it is worth getting the nice Falke ones - O usually get them from Toast or John Lewis.

DH loves BAM bamboo socks and tbh they do wash really well and are very soft.

I'll have a look at Falke.

Soft sounds good - but are they any harder wearing?

I bought lots of Seasalt socks but find them far too small after a few washes.
I’ve gone back to M&S cotton with Lycra. I find them long lasting for the price

Socks do get a lot of wear. In the past, darning them was a regular, ongoing part of the household sewing, knitting, etc.

I haven't found that any brand has an advantage. I buy ones I like in mostly cotton and when they wear out, I put them in the rag bag under the sink for cleaning and dusting.

I find that mine wear out on the ball of my foot too but I have a callus there due to my long middle toe so it is related to my foot shape (google about Morton's toe).

My family's socks wear out too: DH's on the heel and ends of toes; DDs' at various points. They walk around in sock feet all the time but I tend to wear slippers.

I bought myself some BAM ones for Christmas having never really considered socks at all and I LOVE them! They are so soft and lovely. I don't know about long lasting as I've only had them for months as opposed to decades (?) for my old rubbishy ones. But I've decided I don't need socks to last and last. I'll just buy more each Christmas if need be.

Thanks for the comments - have ordered some BAM ones (don't think I've ever spent that much on socks before!) and will see how I get on!

I buy Vulpine merino cycle socks in the sale when they are half price. They are amazing. I've got a few pairs that are 5 years old and are like new. They never get my feet sweaty even marching around cities in them in the summer and keep my lovely and warm in the winter. They are brilliant. www.vulpine.cc/products/clothing/clothing-accessories/socks?bid=365&sp_nav=45_ACCESSORIES_SOCKS
