Does box hair dye expire/go off once colour cream is opened?

My roots are an absolute disaster thanks to not seeing my hairdresser since mid March so I've decided to use a box dye that I THINK I bought around 1-2 years ago.

Just opened the colour cream tube thingy to do a test patch and it's already opened! I vaguely remember doing a test patch when I bought it but then chickened out and just let my hairdresser do my roots instead.

Will it be safe to use now? I appreciate this may sound ridiculous to some and I wouldn't be considering this were I not absolutely desperate

I dont know whether they go off or not although after 2 years I would imagine it's not in the same condition as when new and unopened.

Personally I would just buy another once.

I think it only goes off once it’s been mixed with the developer so it should be ok. Why not try it, then if the dye doesn’t take you can buy a new one.
