Saltwater sandals

Are they as good as people say?

Are they comfy and easy to wear?

@ScorpionQueen unfortunately they are a size four, sorry!

CountFosco · 06/06/2020 19:59

Oh, I'm a size 4 Judy and could do with a red pair!

I love mine and find them phenomenally comfortable (unlike fitflops that lots on here seems to rave about, I find them really uncomfortable and restrictive). In fact I wore my Saltwaters on a 5 mile walk across farmland in the north of England last week. Everyone I know loves them. If Saltwater want to pay me to rave about their sandals I'd be delight but unfortunately they've never offered. You do need to soak them the first time you wear them and let them dry on your feet. Mine are 3 years old now and they still look good as new.

Itscoldouthere · 06/06/2020 20:40

So funny that people who don’t like them think that people who do like them are marketing plants.... seriously 🤣

TheCanterburyWhales · 07/06/2020 10:59

There have been marketing plants on MN since forever.

Most noticeably the last few years Saltwater, Hush, MintVelvet, The Ordinary, Me&Em. (I mean, seriously, does anyone really believe that a whole group of people buy so many clothes from one brand that they have long running "omg look at those gorgeous synthetic fibres in the new range" threads?

Boden owe HQ a fair bit in commission from their plants from about 10-15 years ago.

The only two of those brands I don't like are Saltwater and The Ordinary.

I'm quite happy to have discovered the others through their marketing dept's efforts on social media.

I've been on MN since 2003 and hang out on S&B a lot. If you search for brands namechecks, it becomes fairly clear when the people employed to publicise the name got busy. Nothing wrong with it, it's the way companies without massive advertising budgets get their names into general circulation. But to pretend it doesn't happen is naive.

Check out the "has anyone bought anything from " and then the replies of "I have bought things from there for ages, it's my favourite brand" answers.

I loved the look of them and bought a pair a couple of years ago. Really liked them on too. Felt comfy. Was already planning to buy another pair in a different colour. Wore them one day for local walking about. Next day at work I could not put my foot down without pain.

I basically gave myself plantar fasciitis and had to wear inserts in my (other) shoes for a few months.

I’m okay now but the foot pain was awful at the time. I still feel a bit jealous when I see people in Saltwaters but they were definitely not right for my feet ( and caused a problem that I had no idea I would be susceptible to).

It’s really interesting that other people find them so comfy. I guess feet are different... (I’m still jealous).

MaryLennoxsScowl · 07/06/2020 13:38

People who say there are plenty of other sandals out there that are pretty and supportive - please post some!

Absolutely couldn’t get on with them at all but I had some very flat sandals when I was younger which were fine so it might be age. (In 40’s now) I felt saltwaters we’re like walking with a piece of thin cardboard strapped to my foot and could feel every tiny stone under foot and they almost gave me plantar fasciitis from now arch support or heel padding. So painful for my heels!

Housewife2010 · 28/06/2020 21:34

I have large feet ( UK 7.5 - Saltwater 9) and the Saltwaters look great on my feet. You definitely don't need to have small feet to suit them. I find SWs comfy and last year I walked miles on holiday in mine. I find they last for years and still look great.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 28/06/2020 21:40

I love mine. I live in them over the summer. So comfortable. It is very important to soak your feet when you first get them though.

breadwidow · 28/06/2020 21:58

Wow such opposing views on this thread!

I'm in the love them camp and I'm not a saltwater marketing person, honestly. Yes they are completely flat but in my book that's a good thing. Our feet evolved to walk on the ground without arch support, and being in a more 'barefoot style' shoe helps to maintain arch muscles. Though saltwaters are not a barefoot brand they are pretty 'barefooty' in terms of being totally flat and also wide fitting.

I found mine so comfy from the first wear, which contrasts a lot with all previous sandals I owned. I always got sandal blisters at least at first every summer but not with my saltines. I now have 3 pairs. They are also pretty hard wearing. 2 of my 3 pairs look pretty much as good as new. The pair that don't are metallic leather, gold. My friends silver ones also scuffed easily so I think the metallic ones aren't as hard wearing.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/06/2020 22:22

Didn't fit me at all. Even the size 9! (Imm7.5 usually.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/06/2020 22:22

Very flat and hard as well.

Anotherdayanothernight · 29/06/2020 07:15

Tried a pair on last year but too flat and to be honest, they are quite frugly sandals, but everyone's taste is different

Ginfordinner · 29/06/2020 07:26

@achillesratty

I tried them and sent them back. They are totally flat with no support and no padding on the insole. They looked like my school sandals circa mid 70's.

I am convinced Seasalt have "plants" on here to say how wonderful and stylish they are but I just didn't like them at all but I know lots of people rave about them.

I'm inclined to agree with you. They remind me of the "Jesus sandals" my mum used to wear in the 1960s and 1970s.

I also think they look ugly and frumpy.

I have flat feet that require support so I need sandals with padded soles and arch support. I also need something that I can walk about all day in.

Gunpowder · 29/06/2020 07:28

They are part of the summer ‘mum uniform’ where I live and loads of my friends wear them. I think they’ve passed the viral marketing stage and are in the mainstream.

I am personally not a fan except for on little kids but would never tell anyone IRL. Wink

Ginfordinner · 29/06/2020 08:51

I don't know anyone who wears them.

AirDuser · 29/06/2020 14:19

Best sandals I've tried. I can walk the whole day with them and my feet wouldn't hurt.

I have big wide feet.

coronabeer23 · 29/06/2020 20:46

I’ve tried so hard to like them but just find they look like children’s start-rite sandals.

Exactly the same experience. Wore them for a day around the shops and then months of agony with plantar fasciitis - which I had never even heard of beforehand! It's I'm very careful indeed with summer footwear now and would urge serious caution with these!
Thecazelets · 29/06/2020 21:01

I don't love them for the reasons people have given above - too flat and hard. Also a bit frumpy for me - I am at an age where I need to be careful not to look too 1970s primary school teacher in that kind of thing.

TheoneandObi · 03/07/2020 12:36

They're not for city streets. But as water sandals they're fab. We live by the coast and you can walk over horrible stones into the sea and swim in them then walk out again without goi g ouch ouch and hopping! And they're a lot more attractive than Tevas for instance. I kayak in mine too so that I can hope in and out over rocks. Dead practical

ZazieRosie · 03/07/2020 13:02

God, not these again. Flat, hard and terribly uncomfortable.

They rear their ugly heads on here with an eerie regularity.

Fedup21 · 03/07/2020 16:27

These are the most uncomfortable pair of shoes I have ever owned. It’s like wearing a piece of hardboard strapped to my feet!

Notquiteagandt · 05/07/2020 19:50

I find mine really comfy. However I have fat feet so lots padding i guess. I also only ever wear flat shoes and mainly barefoot friendly. Mine are about 8 years old now and still look brand new. I have red and yellow pairs so do feel a bit like an overgrown toddler 🤦‍♀️
