Sunglasses

I have had a bonus payment at work and before I make sensible choices for it, i want one completely frivolous thing. My taste in watches are too expensive and I dont wear vast amounts of jewellery these days.

I want a pair of timeless sunglasses that I can wear for years. I have quite a fat round face and a big forehead so need slightly bigger ones, and preferably quite dark, either black or dark brown. I'm thinking Ray-bans maybe, possibly Clubmaster or Wayfarer but can anyone else give me ideas or suggestions?

I have a pair of Waterhaul Crantocks and I love them! They are quite dark, and vaguely ray-ban in style. Considering getting a pair in the Kynance style too.

I've been on a mission to find the perfect sunglasses for decades and I think I've finally found them (and they're polarized too which is also better).

I also have the Ray Ban Erika (the polarized version) which I love but I prefer the plastic arms of the Serengeti ones.

Ginfilledcats · 02/06/2020 13:51

Ray ban wayfairer fan here!

jackandflo · 02/06/2020 13:59

I also wear ray bans I own this pair i wished I had got smaller ones though they do make you a bit white marked in the eye region :)

Wasabiprawns · 02/06/2020 14:15

Maui Jim are great sunglasses, loads of different styles. The rose lenses make everything look amazing

XingMing · 02/06/2020 18:16

Maui Jim and Serengeti are hard to choose between for quality and protecting your sight, but I think MJ's fashion ranges are more stylish and less mainstream mass market than RayBan. MJ are also extremely helpful and reasonable if you need to send them back for new parts.

Fidgety31 · 02/06/2020 18:33

I always buy ray ban Jackie ohhs as they fit my fat head well and don’t squeeze behind the ears .
They don’t last me more than a few years each though as I scratch them by not keeping them in their cases .

DungballInADress · 02/06/2020 19:24

Thanks all...I stupidly said this out loud so of course I came downstairs to find an error code on the dishwasher....

OP posts:
StCharlotte · 02/06/2020 21:04

Oh boo!

XingMing · 02/06/2020 21:55

Google the error code; lots are just resets.

cherrypiepie · 02/06/2020 22:40

If you go for raybans ... Love my raybans so much. Rayban New Wayfarer size 55. Get polarised if you can.

Lots do you tube video demos about sizes and styles.

There is /was 30% of at Wayfair website and regularly send offers so well worth subscribing to their emails

XingMing · 03/06/2020 17:37

Hope you were able to clear the error with your dishwasher, and are still on for posh sunnies... not that you're likely to need them for a few days!

DungballInADress · 04/06/2020 17:33

Thanks all! Googled the error code, tried all the usual (it's a fairly straightforward Bosch Classixx slimline) but nothing working and my usual repair guy is on holiday till Monday. I've had to wash dishes by hand....the horror.....

We had that dishwasher. It was an absolute pain in the arse. Error codes all the fucking time. You might be able to get rid of it by tipping it backwards, we gave up in the end.

I love Wayfarers too, I’ve had prescription lenses put in mine now for driving.

RockThrills · 04/06/2020 18:20

Meh. Invest in some marigolds and get yourself a pair of Chloe sunglasses

Primotomb · 05/06/2020 18:31

Fat face and large forehead too and recently treated myself to Rayban Jackie Ohh (I got the polarised version) and love them

DungballInADress · 05/06/2020 18:58

Tried the tipping back thing, which worked the last time but to not this time. See what the engineer says next week.

Rayban have 20% off some styles, including all the Jackie Ohh ones....so I'm still looking!

TooMinty · 05/06/2020 19:07

I have Raybans Wayfarers and also Aviators. And whilst I do love them, they are really popular so you'll see loads of people wearing them. I like the first recommendation, similar to Raybans but probably less ubiquitous.

MistyMinge2 · 06/06/2020 08:29

I bought some Ray Bans recently and got 30% off. Go on the official Ray Ban website and sign up to the newsletter and you'll get sent a discount code.

I went for the wayfarer II classic in gloss tortoiseshell. I love them. They're a softer shape than the original wayfarer imo, but still a classic style that I think will still look good in 5 years time.

Martysmarvellousmeals · 06/06/2020 09:34

I love Ray-Bans and have worn plenty over the years and find the polarised ones best for me. But like you I have a round face and you have to be careful with a lot of the Ray-Ban styles as they sit low on the cheek area, which is not good for round faces!

Currently have the new wayfarer which just fit my cheeks, so to speak.

The Jackie O ones may be too big, my personal take on those is many people just look like big bugs with them on esp with round faces, round and round does not look good, jut my humble opinion!

Alocasia · 06/06/2020 10:26

Hi, I am a sunglasses addict, also an optician selling loads of brands so I this is my favourite topic 😄
RayBan quality is not what it used to be, I also am always saying that Wayfarers in particular suit very few people (same with the classic Aviators) Make sure you try some on if these are the ones you are going for! There are also different sizes and you won’t know which is correct for you without trying on.
Maui Jim are IMO far and away the best lenses. In the past I have taken several pairs of sunglasses on holiday only to wear the Mauis all the time as the vision is so superior in the lenses, colours look amazing and everything looks so clear. There are loads of styles and the quality is good.
Also worth checking out some of the smaller European brands, depending on your taste there are lots of designer glasses brands that are much better made than the mass-market brands (many of which are all made by the same company anyway). Happy to give a few brand suggestions of you let me know what styles you like! 😎

DungballInADress · 11/06/2020 09:15

Thanks for all the advice. I'll look at the Maui Jims and I'm quite taken with the Waterhaul ones - I'm in the south West, like the British branding and the glass lenses.

Dishwasher - you could not make up. Chap came round to fix it, turns out that a mpuse is living somewhere under my kitchen sink and has chewed the drain hoses. Apparently, mice love Bosch hoses - somethinf to do with vegetable oil used in the manufacturing process. A part has been ordered, but if that doesn't work its a whole new machine. I grew up in converted farm buildings and an array of old houses so I have no issue with it, but my husband did consider yesterday burning the place down. It's rented, so I'd rather he didn't....

Traps ordered....off to Google Maui Jims

I don't know anything about posh sunglasses (I own a dozen cheap pairs to match outfits) but your update really made me laugh. Buy a cat with your bonus?

DungballInADress · 11/06/2020 11:35

I wish! Would love a cat (we are quite big Marvel nerds and want a ginger cat called Flerkin....if you know, you know), but would need to pay additional deposit, and I can just guarantee that the cat would be the worst mouser in the world....

I have a few pairs I love. Ray-Ban Erikas. These Gucci ones which I wear a lot. These from Orla Kiely. And I bought a pair of cheap Oscar de la Renta ones from TK Maxx one day when I forgot mine and needed some, and they're lovely and really suit me but the quality is very poor and I doubt they'll last long.

I wish I could have a pair of Ray-Ban aviators but they look awful on me. I try them on every time I'm in an airport just in case my face has completely changed since last time, but sadly it never has.

I really like these ones from Maui Jim.
