To ask how much you pay for clothing?

Wondering if anyone wants to come out and state what they pay for a dress, blouse, jumper, jeans on average.

Would love to know the most you pay for clothing.

I just can’t imagine what this dress would look like for this price that you could wear to the pub or work.

Just send the link, we need to see it!

pancakeloverrr · 28/05/2020 19:47

@Soph88888

I showed my mom (70) and she said she would wear it. I honestly don't think it'll go out of style bc it looks great on me at 34!

OP posts:
PhoneLock · 28/05/2020 19:49

Not a lot. Most of them are secondhand off eBay. I rarely pay more than £10 for anything.

Latest purchase was a pair of Hollister shorts. £3.40 delivered.

I’m not really interested in clothes and spent £50 on a summery dress for my own Wedding and it felt ridiculously frivolous as I never wear dresses but usually jeans/trousers and t shirts. I tend to buy my clothes from the supermarket or very cheap in the sales.

I had a friend that wore more expensive ‘Classic’ clothes in either white/navy/black, which I’m sure were nice but looked a bit boring to me.

pancakeloverrr · 28/05/2020 19:50

@PerditaProvokesEnmity

This is the style and Beaty section. I have no agenda. I was wondering how much people spend on clothing, and now how often.

I rarely shop anymore so I wanted to know out of curiosity. Is there supposed to be an agenda on a 'style and beauty' thread?

Good question.
Jumpers around £50-£70 usually Toast wool or Brora Cashmere on sale or eBay BNWT
Jeans usually Gap £40 with 40% discount sometimes Seven for All Mankind from TKMaxx similar but original price £180 +
Tops vary hugely, recently Brora cotton £35 Brand Alley, seasalt £25 ish, hush tees £25ish, Toast £45 sale
Dresses Toast £55 - £130 all on sale
Jumpsuits Toast or White Company all on sale £60-130
Skirts Toast/Seasalt/white Company £35-£65 on sale
Shoes £50-£80 on sale
Boots £60- £200 Dubarry/ Seasalt on sale
Coats I see as for life, so Dubarry Tweed £300, Barbour £130, Burberry Mac £650, Belstaff Leather £500, Joseph Cashmere £400 all on sale so original prices much higher.
For bags £100-£700 all leather apart from Longchamp le pliage, Mulberry, Coach, Ralph Lauren all discount or second hand unused.
In summary I love quality that lasts and HATE getting rid of anything. But have to save and can only afford sales. Every time I buy cheap I regret it, things go holey or pull badly or shrink. I’m very grateful I have been able to earn enough to invest in things I plan to last me for years.
My Joseph black long cashmere coat is over 20 years old and worn a lot every winter for example. I have a 15 year old Burberry Mac that still looks great, at least another 15 years in it. So, cost per wear and with minimal waste I’m happy.

Canyoutellilikrchocolate · 28/05/2020 19:53

We have some fab charity shops around here so
Dress £15
Top £7
Trousers/skirt £5-10
That’s brands like Whistles, Reiss, LK Bennett, Mint Velvet in excellent condition.
When I buy new it’s mainly from TK Maxx. But mostly I get 2nd hand these days.

Ragwort · 28/05/2020 19:54

If you are happy with it then what does it matter? Hmm

When you say you can afford it, do you have a mortgage, savings, pension plans etc?

In theory I could go out and spend that amount on a dress, I have a lot more in savings, but personally I just couldn’t bring myself to spend that much on a piece of clothing, but we are all different. I am super happy when I find a really nice dress in a charity shop for £10.

lavenderbongo · 28/05/2020 19:56

I am trying to only buy second hand from now on. So my last purchase was a Burberry Coat for $35 (I’m not in the UK). It’s fun searching online and charity shops for quality brands. Don’t feel guilty about the dress. You’ve shopped ethically as it should last for years!

pancakeloverrr · 28/05/2020 19:58

@AmethystMoonShine

I feel the same way! I have clothing from 20 years ago that look brand new, that I still wear. I don't buy often and only things I look at for months and know it's made well to last. It's also less waste.

OP posts:
PerditaProvokesEnmity · 28/05/2020 19:58

But OP - the same people who tell you that they find Sainsbury's too extravagant for clothes will forget to tell you that they keep three horses.

Those who boast of only ever buying job lots on eBay won't mention their brand new Range Rover. Half the people sniffing that they'd never pay outrageous prices for 'designer' clothes are paying school fees or a retinue of tutors.

What I'm saying is that if you do genuinely want some moral or financial guidance on the relative value of a particular, elective purchase you're not going to get a reliable answer from the question you've asked.

(And it touches a nerve with me. I hate this oblique belittling of women's expenditure.)

Nosuchluck · 28/05/2020 20:00

Jeans £15.
Blouse £10 to £25
Dress £20 to £30

sHREDDIES19 · 28/05/2020 20:17

Well I spend an embarrassingly tiny amount on clothes. I am a big fan of eBay and I guess I’m lucky as I have a small frame so finding clothes that suit me is quite easy. It’s good as you can get an absolute bargain! I also keep my clothes for years and years, even Primark stuff. If you find the right item it can last the distance.

Hairydogmummy · 28/05/2020 20:28

Similar to @AmethystMoonShine for me. Hugely varied. I've bought quite a lot recently. From a £14 dress from Dorothy Perkins to a £95 Barbour padded jacket and everything in between!

Why question people's motives? It's bad enough on Chat and AIBU without it on here as well. Personal comments about why people are posting and people saying the thread is ridiculous. Why comment then?

I wouldn't feel bad about the dress. It's all relative. Different incomes, different priorities, different expenses.

EllaPaella · 28/05/2020 20:34

If you have £700 to spend on a dress and it's not eating into money that you need for other stuff then really I don't see why you shouldn't have it. If it's a rare treat to yourself, an investment piece and it's something you will get a lot of wear out of then it's really not that different to someone spending the same on a handbag.
Personally I haven't ever spent that much on one item of clothing or a handbag but I have friends who have handbags that cost around the same.

nowaitaminute · 28/05/2020 20:36

Jeans anything from 50 to 200

Tops usually 20 to 60

Coats I pay anything from 100-300

Dress depending whether casual or not I have paid anything from 30 - 150 for casual
150 to 500 for dressier ones.

Shirts/blouses 30-60

Smarshian · 28/05/2020 20:38

Well if you can afford it and you think you’ll get your monies worth out of it then keep it and enjoy it!
I can’t be trusted not to ruin anything expensive 😂

Canyoutellilikrchocolate · 28/05/2020 20:49

I don’t believe that dresses last forever though.
Maybe it’s just me, but I find clothes get to the point where the armpits get a bit rank and have to be discarded. Or what if you change size?

WowStarsWow · 28/05/2020 20:52

What designer is the dress OP? And how do you know it will be so versatile? I'm terrible at being able to tell what I will wear lots. Good for you for finding something you love so much!

For me:
Dress, anything from £40 to £250ish I guess
Knitwear, £40-£200
Jeans, used to spend up to £200 but lately I've been getting them from Topshop and Asos.
Blouses, I've spent up to £250 on silk, for work.

KensalGreen · 28/05/2020 20:56

On average:

  • £30 for jeans
  • £15-30 for tops
  • £30-50 for shoes
  • up to £100 for an occasion dress

I’d be prepared to pay more for clothes but I find it so hard to judge whether things are well made, the quality of the material and how much wear I’ll get out of them.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 28/05/2020 21:01

That dress will bring you joy for years to come, do it's money well spent imo. The only way it would be wrong is if you were spending money that you needed for something else.
I agree with the pp who said that everyone has different spending priorities - I'd never buy a horse and would much rather have a dress, whereas someone else would much prefer to spend £700 on their horse. Do what makes you happy and don't allow other people to ruin it for you by trying to make you feel guilty.

Crystalspider · 28/05/2020 21:19

Tops/shirts I spend around £20-£45
Jeans up £50
Trousers £40
I shop around everywhere really, mid range high street, higher end in the sales, primark and supermarkmarkets if I just want a plain Tee or vest.
I would invest more money in coats, shoes and handbags as I would keep them for a few years.

Swiftier · 28/05/2020 21:25

It’s a good question.

I’ve found some amazing things in charity shops or vintage shops and spent a small amount on some items in my wardrobe, but I also spend a lot if it’s something I love and will get used.

But on average for new items:
Knitwear - £100-200
Tees - £50
Blouses/shirts/nicer tops £100-£200
Jeans - £100-£300
Coats/jackets - £200-£1000
Shoes- £100
Bags £200

Also completely agree it’s about priorities, I spend on clothes and enjoy but I don’t spend on things that others might choose to (Eg I don’t have any expensive hobbies etc). I also choose to only buy, for example, one item that I will spend more on rather than lots of cheaper items. I know friends who will easily spend £100-£200 on an ASOS/Primark etc haul, but will think I’m extravagant for spending £200 on a jumper. That’s probably the only item I’d buy that month and I have less items in total than many of my friends. And obviously, on top of that - what’s affordable will vary massively between people.

Kenworthington · 28/05/2020 21:26

Gosh well individually not that much I guess bu I but ALOT of clothes because I love them.
Dress- anything up to £150
Jeans- I don’t like buying them, if I find. A good pair I’ll buy two or three identical. I think the ones I wear most were around £50. I have three pairs
Coats- I love coats. Anything up to £250 I guess
Blouse- hmm it’s not really something I wear much but prob 20-50
Jumpers- pure wool only, prefer cashmere. £50-300 (I include a ridiculous handmade one in that- I don’t know what cane over me🤦🏼‍♀️. Would usually be around 50-100
I must add again I have A great many of these items 😬😬 I really don’t need anything and should stop buying

Nosuchluck · 28/05/2020 21:29

OK and you get bored of the dress? I can only keep things for an absolute maximum of three years because I get sick of them.
