Dressing hip shelves

Attached photo isnt me, but is my basic shape. I'm on a diet and the image is pretty much my goal.

I've always hated my shape. Nothing sits right, and all fat accumulates around the high hip. I'm an a-cup, and 5 foot 5. Arms and legs are slimmish (compared to the mid-section).

Anyone else got this shape? How do you style yourself?

I live in dresses, but I'm bored of my style. I'm doing a lockdown makeover, but I'm not going to buy any clothes until I get to target (August hopefully).

Are hip dips different to love handles?
Because that's what I see in this picture and that's very common, myself included

winterisstillcoming · 28/05/2020 21:35

I'm considering this at the moment but I'm also short so might not suit:

11stoneTess · 28/05/2020 21:39

@pinkstar01, similar, but different because even when weight is lost, the high hip sticks out further than it does on most people so you never have that smooth hip line, you have bumps.

@winterisstillcoming, that dress is beautiful, and a bargain! Would be too long for me too sadly, suit above the knee.

I have this figure and high waisted jeans in a not too thin fabric are my friend.
I recently got some M&S Sophia jeans and they are the first jeans I’ve had in ages that don’t slide down!

MerryDeath · 28/05/2020 23:02

isn't this just what happens when your low cut jeans are a size too small?

ClientQ · 28/05/2020 23:38

@MerryDeath nope, mine are obvious when I'm naked Grin
This pic shows them (off google, not me!)

i mean like wearing tight trousers causing your fat to settle in different places. i had this when i was younger and was always optimistically clinging to 'thin' clothes but it's much reduced now that i don't do that anymore!

SpiderPlantSally · 29/05/2020 08:39

Buy some high waisted jeans and they'll be gone.

11stoneTess · 29/05/2020 08:39

Mine are obvious naked too. Those of us who have it, it's the shape of our pelvis. It looks like a spare tire if you're even a tiny bit overweight, but it's the bone. Like ClientQ's photo shows, it requres careful dressing.

This very slim girl still has the shape with next to no body fat. And another showing the shape without jeans on. Both from google.

Will try high waisted jeans - once I can try things on again!

AnnieGetYerGun · 29/05/2020 08:45

I have this shape (size 14) but I had it even when I was a 8-10. My upper hip sticks out so I have a double hip bump rather than a smooth curve if I’m naked or wear anything tight. I also have a big bum and relatively slim thighs, so clothes are tricky!

I find fitted (but not too tight) dresses with a fitted waist/belted waist but skimming over the hips, a-line or skater dresses (show off waist, flare out over hips) and high waisted jeans (Smooth out there bumps) are most flattering. They turn me in to more of an hourglass shape.

11stoneTess · 29/05/2020 08:55

I must admit i've been wearing jeggins, and they do me no favours at all! Decent proper jeans have been on my list for a while now, so definately going to get some highwaisted ones.

I read on a website yesterday to avoid skinny jeans, as the slim ankle makes the hip look bigger. will try a straightleg and see if its more flattering.

poppym12 · 29/05/2020 08:59

I've seen it referred to as 'violin hips' in articles I've read about different body shapes.

Puppylucky · 29/05/2020 09:06

It's called Viola shape. I have it too and always have had even when I was tiny . Low cut trousers look terrible on me
I look best in peg or straight cut trousers that sit at my natural waist (which is still quite small) and skim over the dip. I like it about my body though as I think it looks womanly Smile

ambereeree · 29/05/2020 09:20

@11stoneTess you should try mid-ruse skinny jeans. Our hips are higher so won't be affected by a slim ankle.
You'll find they hold you in and smooth the dip a bit more than straight.

11stoneTess · 29/05/2020 09:22

Volin hips sounds much nicer than shelves or dips!

I have a wide natural waist, but still, the priciple should be the same for me. I also have a small flat bum i'm trying to add volume to with exercise, but might not be possible while i'm dieting though.

Been looking at all the bra intervention threads and quite confused, so look forward to the time when I can try a few on. No point till i'm at goal weight I expect.

banivani · 29/05/2020 09:25

I've seen violin hips too so googling with that phrase might throw up ideas. Trouser-wise if you don't want them to show I'd go for wider legs, higher waist, so clothes will be small in the waist but have material to skim the hips. Paperbag trousers for example. I'd wager that Uniqlo's U jeans would work nicely too.

11stoneTess · 29/05/2020 09:25

ambereeree I will give mid rise skinnies a try too.

Would love to go the french tuck with jeans, but its currently deeply unflattering. Hope thats an option at goal.

OP posts:
11stoneTess · 29/05/2020 09:26

Thanks banivani, i'll investigate those.

Canyoutellilikrchocolate · 29/05/2020 09:48

It’s not something that’s ever bothered me about myself. I don’t think it looks bad at all - just avoid wearing jeans like in the OP as they look terrible (not because of the model’s shape, those jeans are ill fitting and unflattering style)

Chuchyduck · 29/05/2020 10:54

They are also called dancers dips. They were actually a covetable shape to be, like everything, body shapes come in and out of fashion, which is ridiculous really. I love mine, always have and don’t worry about showing them off.

bronzedgodesswannabe · 29/05/2020 11:04

They are just another thing woman are made to feel self conscious about ..
Mainly due to celebrities and all that social influencer crap
But a lot of celebs etc have fillers put into those 'dips' to fill them out
You can actually buy underwear with padding on those areas .. Mental

I have them, they look worse since I've put on abit of weight but in general I look better being abit bigger so it's the price I pay!
I read so many articles and watched videos on YouTube about how to reduce them, tried the exercises, obsessed etc
But the best video I watched was a girl basically saying they are normal, they are natural and something to love and accept
So I've gone for that approach it's easier than doing a million donkey kicks

ambereeree · 29/05/2020 11:12

I find mine annoying. Trousers never fit quite right. I tried paper bag but I'm short waisted so looked awful.

11stoneTess · 29/05/2020 12:53

Yeah, i'd mind this shape less if I could find trousers. No one designs for this shape - that i've found anyway.

In other news, I found a 34B bra in my collection and theres gaping in the cup at the top. It's a padded push up (the only kind I wear). Will remeasure tonight as my first measurements can't be right.

OP posts:
Spam88 · 29/05/2020 13:45

Remeasure and make sure you're pulling that tape measure tight. I used to wear a 34A and now wear a 30DD - I can buy bras without spongebob on and it's wonderful 😂 there's lots of guidance on the Boob or Bust website about how to check bras fit properly as well - particularly useful is trying a bra on backwards to check whether the band fits correctly.
