Dressing hip shelves

Attached photo isnt me, but is my basic shape. I'm on a diet and the image is pretty much my goal.

I've always hated my shape. Nothing sits right, and all fat accumulates around the high hip. I'm an a-cup, and 5 foot 5. Arms and legs are slimmish (compared to the mid-section).

Anyone else got this shape? How do you style yourself?

I live in dresses, but I'm bored of my style. I'm doing a lockdown makeover, but I'm not going to buy any clothes until I get to target (August hopefully).

I shall be the first to say: have you done your boob or bust measurement?

11stoneTess · 28/05/2020 16:38

Yes, measured by M&S.

How old are you and what size are you now? I'm the same shape OP but even worse I have a short torso as well

Chuchyduck · 28/05/2020 17:04

I absolutely love hip dips, I think that they look gorgeous.

Llareggub · 28/05/2020 17:09

You can wear anything, can’t you?

I’m an apple. All my weight is on my tummy and I’m a G cup. Not in M&S though, they got me completely wrong.

MulberryPeony · 28/05/2020 17:14

I’m similar and think it’s called a spoon shape. Someone linked to a website that have your shape using bust, waist, high and low hip measures but can’t remember what it was off the top of my head.

thecognoscenti · 28/05/2020 17:16

Watching with internet because I'm the same, I've got huge hips. Even at my thinnest (borderline underweight according to BMI) I was still a size 12 on the bottom. I do find dresses most flattering provided they're cut properly to fit my waist. I could give you a long list of things that don't work! A drop-waisted dress was a particular low, I don't know what I was thinking 🤦🏻‍♀️

11stoneTess · 28/05/2020 17:20

I'm 38 and just into some 14's. I have a way to go weight wise. This is for after (while I have all this free time to research Smile). And something to focus on to keep on track.

I would rather never go to another bra measurement session - scarred for life.

Yes, I can wear anything I guess, but look crap in a lot. Trousers, for example, often have lots of spare material under the bum and top of thighs because have to be a size or two larger than I need in those places because of the hips. And skirts tend to hip the high hip bump and flare out from there making me look a lot wider.

@chuckyduck. Swap you in a heartbeat.

Please don't use the M&S bra method. Please (I beg of you!) Google Boob or Bust and do their measurements.

Budapestpest · 28/05/2020 17:24

Op, m&s are terrible at bra measuring, you won’t be an a cup if that’s what they said you are

ambereeree · 28/05/2020 17:27

@11stoneTess thick material pencil skirts are your friend. Hides the dip

ambereeree · 28/05/2020 17:28

Oh and I only wear very skinny jeans. With a long top. I used to love the tops that fitted under the bust and then flare out. Now I wear more fitted shirts.

11stoneTess · 28/05/2020 17:30

I will measure at home and try Boob or Bust. The bras I have are very comfortable so I think it's right.

Budapestpest · 28/05/2020 17:31

Have a look at some of the bra intervention threads on here op. They’re illuminating! Guarantee you you’re not an a cup if that’s what m&s said you are.

11stoneTess · 28/05/2020 17:33

Thanks ambereeree. I will try pencil skirts again. Found them restrictive so always wore something else.

MulberryPeony, will look up spoon shape.

winterisstillcoming · 28/05/2020 17:39

I'm this shape. Anything with a fitted waist, or an empire line. Unfortunately those types of clothes lean towards the more frumpier styles. A well fitting blazer does wonders.

MulberryPeony · 28/05/2020 17:40

Sorry got waylaid talking with DH. Here’s the link shopyourshape.com/body-shapes/spoon-body-shape/ it give you some pointers then you can google celebs and see how they dress.

11stoneTess · 28/05/2020 17:44

Yeah, I think thats it, I feel frumpy. Weightloss will help, but won't stop me looking lumpy.

Would love a drop waist dress like @thecognoscenti but also found it was horrific on.

Thanks @MulberryPeony

Are they hip dips in the picture, or just the effect of trying to get low rise jeans to stay up on that body shape? On me it's definitely the latter - if they aren't cutting off circulation then they fall straight off! Hence not wearing anything low rise... I'm a very overweight, short-bodied hourglass, to the point where despite being 5'7", I'm technically petite. I wear things which sit on my waist and cover them with long tops. Doesn't show off my waist but it's not worth showing off at the moment!

ambereeree · 28/05/2020 18:59

I'm now pretty much exactly the shape in the picture after my kids. It was much easier when I was slimmer but even then I used to experiment with different types of underwear to wear under bodycon dresses to hide the dip. Brooklyn decker has the dip hips as well.

ambereeree · 28/05/2020 19:03

In other words you can be as thin as possible and the dips persist Angry

11stoneTess · 28/05/2020 20:24

Ok, so boob or bust says 34 c, which makes no sense at all. I've been wearing 34/36a. There is space in the cup. I dont have anything to fill a bigger cupsize.

OP posts:
MulberryPeony · 28/05/2020 21:13

Do you measure 34 under the boobs without adding any inches?

11stoneTess · 28/05/2020 21:17

33 tight.
34 snug.
