What hat do you wear in the sun?

I’m very fair, I wear factor 50 on my body and I wear foundation with SPF on my face. My worst part that burns straight away is my parting down the middle of my hair. This is even in May in the UK (I don’t even sit in the sun on holiday abroad in August, just stay in the shade!) A cap is too hot and not really my style, plus usually makes kink in my hair. Straw hat? Any recommendations welcome! Something for sitting out in the garden but for out for walks too (live within walking distance of the sea).

I like straw hats as they protect your face and neck as well, and they're light and airy. To protect hair and scalp only, I often use silk scarves.

LittleRa · 25/05/2020 13:12

Thanks for your reply. I never thought of using a scarf!

I wear a pith helmet, but then I am a steampunk!

Actually they are cool because they don't rest directly on the top of your head and as they are made of cork (the proper ones that is) you can pour water over them before wearing and the water evaporates helping to cool you down.

Of course you may get a few strange looks, but I overcome this by making sure that the rest of my clothing is also steampunk Grin

I mostly wear a straw hat but now I want a pith helmet Grin and I’m not even remotely goth!

I also have a cotton sun hat but find it does get hot. I like a full brim though, the only time I wear a cap is sailing.

That stops the strange looks?

Navy fedora with tan band. I've had it for years and is a lightweight wool and I wear it year round.

Oldraver · 25/05/2020 13:53

I have a cotton bucket hat I sometimes wear.

Though I also have a parasol that I cant resist to getting out

iMatter · 25/05/2020 13:57

Baseball cap

Usually one belonging to my sons. Today it is a stylish AllBlacks cap, yesterday it was a green cricket one

Londonborncatty · 25/05/2020 13:59

What about a wide fabric headband. Will cover the majority of your hairline and they are everywhere at the moment.

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 25/05/2020 14:00

I’m the same OP!!

I hate all hats, they make me sweat and I have never yet found one that suits my face shape. Angry

I am honestly looking for a parasol, I’ve seen some gorgeous ones that are way out of my budget but I’m saving...

wiltingflower · 25/05/2020 14:03

Straw hat is what I go for but it does fly off with a bit of wind which is annoying

OverZoomed · 25/05/2020 14:09

I bought a Pikapooh cotton sun hat which is working well for me. Wide-ish brim, not too floppy, has a way to tighten it when it’s windy, fits in my small handbag when I don’t want it any more.

A tatty old Burghley horse trials cap. Functional rather than fashionable.

'That stops the strange looks'

Absolutely PhoneLock, as they then become admiring, curious or happy looks; and it's amazing how many people take no notice at all (although they could be giving the mad woman in odd clothes a wide berth of course, in case she's dangerous ...)

GrimDamnFanjo · 25/05/2020 16:41

A Tilley hat. I love hats but haven't got as much choice in the Sumner.
Wishing I had the right wardrobe to pull off a pith helmet!

bronzedgodesswannabe · 25/05/2020 17:26

I have a lovely straw type hat I bought in new York years ago! It's perfect as covers my face and neck
Loads of people have asked me where I got it from as they want one, and the closest one I have found is from ASOS
I wear a hat all the time in the sun so I'm thinking of investing in some more
H&M also have some lovely ones!!

Depends what style you like

But I find the sturdier ones offer more sun protection and are less annoying than the floppy ones!

BloomedAgain · 25/05/2020 22:15

I often wear men's fedora type sunhats as they're a bit more structured.

copycopypaste · 25/05/2020 22:20

I've hit a leather Australian hat which I love. I use it for sitting in the garden, walking the dogs and being outdoors. Use it in shitty weather too. I wear a tilly type thing if I want to look nice

HappyGirlNow · 25/05/2020 22:41

Invest in a real panama.. love mine

Terralee · 26/05/2020 14:36

I wear my pale pink Adidas baseball cap from Topshop... in the garden & on the beach.
Basically with a baseball cap you can wear it while reclining on a lounger or beach towel as there's no brim at the back!
Plus you sort of look sporty!

DrDavidBanner · 26/05/2020 14:50

I have huge hair and I really don't suit hats so I usually wear a scarf.

Mesmeri · 26/05/2020 14:56

Scarf/bandana or a buff. I have a ridiculously large skull and also very thick hair, it is very hard to find hats that fit me. Plus I always find even the lightest hats in hot weather make me too hot. I might be a bit unusual though.

tomhardyfan · 26/05/2020 14:58

I wear one of these please don't laugh Grin

AdoptedBumpkin · 26/05/2020 15:11

Caps or bucket hats lately.
