Can you help me with summer trousers please?

I pretty much live in jeans. I have some straight leg linen trousers for summer but feel frumpy in them and I’ve lost a bit of weight so they’re a bit on the big side which is making them look even more shapeless and frumpy. I’m 59, 5’ 0” and hourglass shape with big bum and thighs and about size 12. I need something really cool (heatwise), very casual and comfortable. Oh and not patterned. I’ve looked and looked again online and I’m totally out of ideas. Can anyone suggest anything?

Do you wear dresses ?
I live in leggings and jeggings ( I carry weight round my middle and I had surgery last year so I have scars so jeans are a no)

I've got the trousers you say you don'r want (typical Grin ) some ancient linen blend M&S dark khaki trousers and some lighter weight patterned soft jersey ones .

But this year , Im getting my dresses out . Soft , stretch cotton with pockets . (I think H&M)
I love the Next linen shift and nearly bought the striped one to go on holiday ( which I'm not now )

Patterned trousers/plain top is still popular is my neck of the woods so I'm going for that !

I haven’t worn dresses apart from when I need to and also because I
Can’t wear any heels at all and at 5’ that tends to make me not look great in a dress. But if I could find a dress that suited me I think I’d give it a go. It’s just that I can’t find ones that work with trainers or flat shoes at mr height. I think leggings would be too hot in the height of summer as I overheat very easily these days . I’ll check some petite range dresses though . Thanks for the suggestions

I cannot wear heels either and YY to the leggings/overheating .
Menopausal hot flushes in Summer . Urgh .

It means I need to work on my pasty white veiny shins though.....

I'm very tempted by this skirt - I tried it on back in February when I was buying a jumper just because I wanted a blue bottom half for comparison, & it's really lovely. It's definitely suited to wearing with trainers (I don't do heels & am about your height).
I also rather like these trousers which I think would be flattering.

ShadowyFigure · 24/05/2020 22:46

sadik I like those trousers a lot thanks. Do you know what their sizing is like. I’ve not heard of this company at all. I’m going to have a look at what else they have. I don’t think skirts suit me at all. I think the right dress could work but I’ve never found a skirt that didn’t make me look like an idiot for some reason.

They’ve sold out of those trousers Sadik Sad

Uniqlo cropped leggings trousers are really comfortable, I’m 5ft3 and they’re a few inches above my ankle so might work for you too?

delilabell · 25/05/2020 08:01

I'm living jersey tapered trousers at the mo but they generally seem to be patterned

Sadik · 25/05/2020 08:13

Oh, that's a shame. I was looking at the ecru colour, which isn't - but less practical than navy. I'd say on the whole their clothes come up about true to size - I've had a few things from them over the years & while they're a bit pricey everything I've had I've worn & worn.

ShadowyFigure · 25/05/2020 08:24

I really loved those blue ones sadik. I will keep checking to see if they get more sizes back in stock. And it’s nice to have a new place to look as I’d never heard of them. I’m going to order some of their t shirts.

I am a definite pear shape. Last year I decided to risk a pair of flowy wide leg trousers and have never looked back. I know it sounds counter intuitive to go for a wide leg if you have wider hips, but the right fabric can be really flattering. Mine are from Hush. Get a light fabric and wear with tights underneath on cooler days.

ShadowyFigure · 25/05/2020 14:09

Blustery I’ve not dared try wide legs for fear of looking like a small box. I’ve moved from skinny to straight leg though which suits me better so maybe I should take the next step and try wider legs. Thanks for the suggestion.

When really warm, I much prefer a dress or skirt - I wear maxi and knee length with the odd midi length. Never wear heels, just Birkies or other sandals, but would also happily wear Stan Smith type trainers. I'm taller than you, so can't wear many mini dresses these days, but presumably they'd be a great length for you?

Zara have got pleated skirts v cheap at the moment? Or there's a lovely floaty blue and white one for £15.99. I bought one in a similar style last year which is fab - I wear it loads.

TheLightGetsIn · 25/05/2020 20:37

Like PP I wear lots of skirts and dresses when it's hot, but when I want to be practical in trousers I also have some loose jeans (M&S) for rolling up to 3/4 length and a couple of pairs of chinos (Boden), which I also often roll up. Or are those still going to be too heavy for the kind of thing you're after?

Defiantly41 · 25/05/2020 20:42

I'm a similar size and shape. Have had success recently with Joules cropped Hesford chinos and John Lewis patch pocket soft chinos, the Joules are true to size, size down for the John Lewis

ShadowyFigure · 25/05/2020 21:40

TheLightGetsIn I have jeans and also some Boden trousers which I like but for really hot weather I’m after something really lightweight but without frumpiness. I look absolutely mad in skirts. They just do not suit me at all. I only wear dresses if I have little choice (weddings basically) and feel happiest in trousers. If I could find a dress I felt nice in is definitely wear one.

Defiantly41 thanks I’ll check out the Joules and the JL.

I've ordered a pair of these White Stuff linen trousers in denim blue. They're pretty much the only pair I've found that's fit my criteria for a) a tapered leg and b) NO drawstring at the waist. I'm also short.
