I have natural dark blonde ashy hair that has been dyed a dark rich brown. I've fallen out of love with darker hair as I've had it for a few years and at first I loved it but no its a bit samey. So I'd like to work with my natural colour and have some lighter bits too. When the hairdressers open I'll have a big lot of regrowth but probably only halflat down my hair. Can it be dyed when it's still got the brown on or do I have to grow it right out. It's such a boring colour and my natural isnt much better!

That should say halfway down my hair

You don’t have to grow it out - they can try to lighten it. Because of the dye, don’t expect an ashy, light blonde after 1 session, it may take multiple sittings to evenly remove the dye/get the colour you’re after unfortunately.

I reckon your 1st session will be a colour correction - they will aim to even you out as much as possible. Eg depending on how much the dye lifts, they may darken your untouched regrowth with toner to blend it with the newly bleached lengths if the dye is stubborn. Then with further sessions you’ll probably just get highlights or balayage as normal to gradually go lighter/ashy with the dyed areas.

To prep - wash your hair as much as possible to fade the dye (Head and shoulders strips colour well) and use lots of moisturising treatments
