What are you doing if you normally have highlights?

My roots are looking terrible. If I normally had an all over colour I think I'd have attempted a DIY job by now but I'm worried that if I do that I'll just mess up my colour long term.
Just wondered what any other highlighted mumsnetters are doing, are you living with the roots or have you caved and gone for a box dye?

A pic.
It ain’t too bad, I think we don’t realise how little we need to do to ourselves sometimes. Even if it’s fun....then I appreciate darker roots might be different but i always think people look fine

Well girls... I went for a box dye tonight and have turned my hair bright fuckin orange. I’m distraught. I used the Schwarzkopf Live in Max Blonde and panicked straight away and washed it off after 20 minutes... my ends are platinum white and the roots tangerine. I start a much needed new job this week and have a new fella so at least can try and avoid the video calls 😢 any ideas? Anyone??

dementedpixie · 23/05/2020 22:59

You havent left it on the roots long enough to get the red tones out. If the roots were darker than the ends you should have only put the dye on them first before spreading to the ends

GinWithRosie · 23/05/2020 23:06

Oh @Cannotcope4223 I'm laughing here...but I do feel your pain! No advice other than to roll with it and own your look 💪💪💪 (😂 sorry!)

Cuddling57 · 23/05/2020 23:17

The sun seems to have lightened my roots a bit.
I always toy with what to do with blonde highlights as I don't like spending so much time (and money) in the hairdressers. I need to cover the greys coming through though.
Was thinking of trying e salon.

AgnesNaismith · 24/05/2020 00:13

@Cannotcope4223 no kidding that’s what I used the first time I tried refreshing my own highlights and it went orange. Obviously I’m stupid so I tried it again but it went really well this time - I used the garnier one with Holly Willoughby on the front. I can post some pics of results if you need? My hair is a warm mid brown naturally.

AgnesNaismith · 24/05/2020 00:16

DIY highlights pic! The blonde isn’t quite as cream coloured as I’d like but for lockdown it’ll do absolutely fine!

I use some of the Josh Wood root cover ups for online meetings, I've got some lovely silk wide covered hair bands from the Anthropologie sale. Going to cover it in these ways until the salons reopen. The sun is helping keeping it lighter and I think surely having a few months rest will do the condition good - I'm air drying it a lot more and leaving it longer between washes and actually have time to slap on deep conditioning masks. I've got a lot of silvery grey roots coming through that I would normally fuss over but in the current circumstances for me personally feel fine with it. Almost tempted to let it grow out....

Cannotcope4223 · 24/05/2020 08:27

AgnesNaismith Aw i just cant believe it! I did it last night and I look like bloody enimen at the roots today. What exact shade did you use? And pics would be amazing! I feel horrendous today... so sorry to hijack OP

TeaChocKitKat · 24/05/2020 08:42

Cannotcope, don't apologise! I hope you can sort it. xxxx

I am naturally a very dark flat brown. These days sprinkled with grey.
My highlights are white blonde.
I'm.currentlynsporting a dark speckled halo of about 2 inches then bright white highlights.
I'm using purple shampoo to tone down the blonde and not has turned more ash which kind of helps a little.
I dare not bleach my hair at home as I fear I'll get ginger roots. My hairs pretty stubborn and my stylist uses strong bleach for it to lift.
I toyed with a box dye but it takes 6 to 9 months to get my blonde blonde back again if I go dark so I'm doing nothing for now. I'm just going with the dark halo..
I dont care much because im not going anywhere. I get the odd day when iblook at myself and think what the he'll, but I don't think I'll be going anywhere for a long time so just avoiding mirrors.

Aria20 · 24/05/2020 09:09

I went pink over my highlight roots

Aria20 · 24/05/2020 09:13

Sorry posted too soon. It came out nice, then the more washes it faded lighter And went to a kind of rose blonde and it covered my roots well and just naturally faded. I've now put a platinum blonde box dye over it and it's very bright lol but it will fade over several washes but hopefully tide me over until I can get it done properly. I never thought of getting a cap and doing highlights.... I considered doing foils for myself but didn't think I'd get fine enough strands. I did chat to my hairdresser before going pink tho and she said it'd be fine and fade etc

SailingAwayIntoSunrise · 24/05/2020 09:16

Yesterday I put a light brown semi over my blonde highlights. It's come out really well. It's a much lighter brown over the blonde highlights so it's nicely broken up.

I'm getting the cap and going to attempt lighter highlights next time.

My dm is a hairdresser (although hasn't practiced in a looong time) and she can't understand why I'd pay someone so much to do my hair when apparently I'm capable of doing it myself 🤷😂

Roselilly36 · 24/05/2020 09:20

I’m not worrying about my highlights, I only have them done 3 times a year, I am naturally strawberry blonde, so it doesn’t like awful at all, sitting in the sun helps lighten my hair too.

Imohsotired · 24/05/2020 09:28

I use a purple shampoo to keep the blonde colour decent and trying to embrace my natural colour. I'd love to highlights but I love being blonde and I'm pretty sure I've greys that would need taken care of anyway.

Mintjulia · 24/05/2020 11:31

Nothing so far.

My colourist said it would take a year to grow out if I dyed them so I'm sitting it out. At least I know just how grey I have become. Actually not that bad. Smile

ageingdisgracefully · 24/05/2020 11:40

I did my own, in desperation.

I kind of painted on the stuff and where it was blobby (pretty much all of it) i used a brown eyebrow pencil to even it out.

It's a bit crap but I'm pleased it's not dried out.

My hair is short do will grow pretty quickly.
