Maxi dresses when you're short and sz 14

I really like them, and in the mirror I think they look nice but then if I catch a side on view in a shop window I look I like a ship in full Salem can short, curvy people with boobs carry off a maxi dress?

God, full sail, not Salem!

If you think they look nice then you'll feel happy & exude more confidence. People will see you &, if they give you a thought at all, they will think 'there goes a women comfortable in her skin'. I'm also a short size 14 & I get what you're saying - it's difficult when you just don't match how you're 'supposed' to look. I will never waft elegantly but that doesn't mean I'm not allowed to wear maxi dresses - I have a couple that I love & they hit just above the ankle bone. A ship in full sail may not be a catwalk look but it can still be an impressive look.

oohnicevase · 21/05/2020 21:42

I do but I make sure they are shaped like me ( hour glass)

BinkySodPlop · 21/05/2020 21:46

I buy dresses from lagenlook clothing. A lot are 1 size, but their model is 5ft3, so although they layer for "the look", I wear the long tunics on their own as dresses. They come just above ankle. Not for everyone, as they are not at all fitted, but good quality linen and cotton and wash and wear well for years.

AnnaNimmity · 21/05/2020 21:46

no.

But if it's any consolation, very few people can carry off a maxi dress. I think they look ridiculous on most people. Sorry. (including me, And I'm a 5.9, size 10, fairly flat chested person).. But what do I know? I've just bought a jumpsuit.

Have a look at the Dorothy Perkins jersey ones- I’m the same as you so I wear them back to from so the V is at the front. That and a proper belt looks fine

ClubTropDeVin · 21/05/2020 21:50

I have some jersey petite maxi dresses from Dorothy Perkins. I love them and they are very cheap. I feel like they are quite flattering too.

Mathsnope · 21/05/2020 21:58

Oh come on. Wtf is 'carry off'' supposed to mean? I get that there is a danger of tall people in maxi dresses looking like they're wearing a pair of curtains but how does that make them ridiculous - worthy of your ridicule?

PrimalLass · 21/05/2020 22:08

I can only wear the vest type

DianneWhatcock · 21/05/2020 22:18

I think they definitely can, I personally love them

I am short and busty too altho a bit slimmer than a Size 14. I find I look best in ones that are quite fitted but flare out a bit at the waist if that makes sense

So they define your waist

I got a couple from boohoo Petite - have attached a pic I've cropped my head out though haha

I second Dorothy Perkins petite for these. It’s the only one that the proportions are cut properly that you don’t look like you are dressing up (or trip over) or have a mass of fabric that make you look ‘full sail’.

Also for me a cotton wrap skirt and vest top works, I’m a curvy 14 and 5ft3 so maybe similar proportions. Have a loot at fat face ‘Simone’ dresses they also work well.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 21/05/2020 22:28

Omg l could have written this!! Short and size 14 and actually put a maxi dress on today that l was really unsure of when l bought it, but literally every time l wear it, someone complements me on it. Including today! So wear the dress and feel good!! Sure you look lovely x

HugeAckmansWife · 22/05/2020 07:56

Thanks all. I like the idea of a belt just to give some definition and avoid the 'is she pregnant' issue. I haven't looked at Dorothy Perkins for quite a while but do like Fat Face a lot. I do vest tops and swishy long skirts too...gives a bit more shape.

@HugeAckmansWife

Yes I do long skirts and vest tops too, gives a similar look to a maxi dress. If you do find a maxi dress though let us know which one you get as I do find its hard to find ones that suit small and curvy
