➿ Fantastic Haircare: Making Sense and Science of the Curly Girl Method

Offshoot from the Fantastic Skincare threads to document the trials and tribulations in order to make sense and science of the curly girl method. We don't necessarily follow it to the letter and are even critical of it in places. Nor are we especially knowledgeable at this point but we're learning as we go. Feel free to join in (especially if you have superior knowledge) as we attempt to approach this with an interest in ingredients and try to not buy everything that promises us magical things…

I got distracted and ordered the inkey list salicylic scalp and the chia seed curl stuff. Will report back...

quirkychick · 18/08/2020 09:49

I used to wash every other day, and now it's usually twice a week. However, with the humidity (my phone tells me it's been 89% here Shock) and early arriving builders up to now, I've ended up washing every 2 to 3 days mostly.

Queen, that sounds interesting, I can't wait to hear.

This weather my hair has mostly been up in a loose bun or plait, as it's too sticky and starts to turn wild!

quirkychick · 18/08/2020 15:12

Today, day 2 after a wash with Gallinee and then Innersense hydrating cream conditioner. It did need a refresh today as it was in a bin yesterday. Still a bit less curly at the sides from that. Nice and shiny, though.

*bun, obviously Grin

botemp · 18/08/2020 15:21

Bin Grin

Looks really good quirky I was going to say healthier but I think well nourished is probably a better description.

My silk cap is making my hair last really long Confused I'm going to wash it tomorrow as I have a rice rinse fermenting but I probably could have lasted another day.

I'm actually quite curious about people's day 2,3,4 hair. I don't tend to get a drastic difference, just a bit of frizz creeping in and loss of volume over the days.

This morning before water spray and curl creme, my hair was fluffy and wavy where it had been up in the humidity. I do use a silk pillowcase, which helps my hair a bit, but I mostly notice the lack of creases on my face. I agree, I think my hair's feeling well nourished, I did just trim the very long ends and took off a tiny bit.

@botemp I have a shocking day 3 photo.... I can post it! Shows how much my curls drop out

PickAChew · 18/08/2020 17:56

Mine proofed completely, in the rain, yesterday. I haven't even bothered styling it, this afternoon. Washed with some shea moisture raw shea and capuacu that needed using up, was going to use the conditioner but it had gone solid in the bottom of the bottle. I don't get any curl that holds with that combo but it leaves my hair soft and shiny. Conditioned with banana hair food mask, instead, then used a bit as a leave in. It will dry with soft waves then I'll look like Hagrid, tomorrow!

PickAChew · 18/08/2020 18:02

Rough!

Well post it already so us mere mortals can feel slightly less bad about our mediocre day one hair...

Pick, I'm getting Daily Mail sad face vibes hiding behind your scribbles Sad it doesn't look that rough, it looks like caught in the rain hair. We just need to make that a thing now, we managed it with bed head, surely we can do it for caught in the rain hair.

That brave little curl, hanging on to the bitter end, though! I had one in my fringe, last night that had turned into a massive tube, so spent the even poking my finger through it, just because I could! At least my humidity frizz is less triangular, after its cut.

I promise to take a pic in the morning, bo. It will be less caught in the rain and more struck by lightning.

PickAChew · 18/08/2020 21:15

Blimey! No need to wait until the morning - and this is with damp ends, from the shower!

I used to look at shelf after shelf of products almost universally offering thicker, fuller hair and sigh in despair.

My scalp is still a bit sore and reactive, though, and it needs a bit of a product break while the weather is so atrocious, I'm not going anywhere of note (the post office can make do with my ponytail) and there's little point in squishing a few quid's worth of gunk into it for it all to fall out, again, anyhow.

Hi all,

I've been a bit AWOL. It was just too hot to bother styling my hair so I was just adding LIC and leaving it to dry naturally. It was mostly in a messy bun.

Today's the first time I've styled it. I reverted back to Giovanni LIC and gel. That's what I used exclusively for the first few weeks and I got quite progressive results, so thought I'd give it another bash. As we know I struggle to get a decent cast so keen to see if the Giovanni LA gives me one given that (hopefully) my technique has improved in the last 4 months.

Going to Devon for a few days from Saturday. Guess I'll just wash and LIC and put up when needed. Weather not looking great.

How's everyone doing?

New goodies to try!
The acid is v watery, the chia more like a leave in cream

Yes, I read some reviews for the scalp treatment and it seems that people found it easier to apply mixed with shampoo or conditioner.
botemp · 20/08/2020 15:37

I'll catch up in a bit (although will say I'm very pleased to see smiley faces instead of DM sad ones) but I've set up a new thread in case this one runs out.

I tried the innnersense hold and foam together and it was a disaster, no hold at all and fluffy hair
My fave still seems to be the curly and kind raked through then ecoslay marmalade on top
