Semi perm Nice n Easy home dye job over salon colour?

Currently growing out a salon colour that I’m not a fan of. I’m naturally cool toned dark blonde/ light ash brown but the salon colour is warm and was ( when it was fresh a five months ago months ago) almost strawberry blonde. I’ve been in once to have a cooler/ darker semi perm colour over it but now it is back to being too warm for my skin tone and I don’t want to have to live with it for months more.

Would I be able to put a semi permanent Nice n Easy over it successfully? I’ve been looking at Light Ash Brown 75 but not sure if Dark Blonde 91 or even Medium Ash Blonde 73 would work.

The first photo is a fair representation of the new colour, the second shows my darker roots coming through.

I’d go for medium ash blonde. They always come darker than they say on the box and you might lose all your blonde and end up light brown. Another option as you are naturally light is to use a lightening spray. They have improved since the days of Sun In. This is one www.amazon.co.uk/Premium-Natural-Lightening-Camomile-Extract/dp/B006U111TC/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=blonde+spray&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1590014070&sr=8-8

I'm not a hairdresser so can't advise from a professional view as to whether you can or not, but I have used these semi permanents before. Personally I found Light Ash Brown a light chestnut shade rather than the cool ash brown I was expecting, but maybe that's just my hair and what it already had on it. I haven't used the blonde shades so don't know, but I can see there's also a Dark Ash Blonde (90) to consider. But I would do a strand test of any box colour first to check the colour. I snip a small bit off from somewhere inconspicuous and secure the strand tightly at the top with cotton thread. Then put the strand on a saucer to apply the colour.

Do you want stay light (without the warmth) or go darker? If you want to stay light but more ashy, try a toner. Use purple shampoo regularly.

I’m surprised you ended up strawberry blonde if you’re naturally dark blonde, as it’s easy to get a cool blonde result from that colour as it’s naturally light.

If you’re going darker be aware that box dyes can come out darker than you want so pick the lighter shade. You’ll probably always have a warm undertone to your hair unfortunately - especially once the colour fades.

@VeganCow I had a quick look at the photo reviews and don’t think it’s suitable for OP as the results look quite ginger/brassy, which OP is trying to avoid

VeganCow · 21/05/2020 00:00

@Mnthrowaway20202 Yes there’s that danger but if it lightened and there was warmth she could then use purple shampoo.

WeeMadArthur · 21/05/2020 09:20

@Mnthrowaway20202 I don’t mind if it goes a bit darker now, anything that makes it easier to grow out. Wish I had never done it now. I always admire other people’s colours when they are done but don’t seem to like it on myself! It’s funny because I think my sons hair colour is lovely but mine is dull and boring but we are the same colour!

I asked my hairdresser to make it look like I had been on holiday but she kept saying about adding 25% warmth in and I said I was cool and didn’t really want warmth added so I was a bit surprised that it was so all over warm ( but decided to live with it).

I do have a purple shampoo but it doesn’t seem to make much difference, it’s the Aveda Blue Malva one so I expected to see more effect. Is there anything else I could use as a toner?think I might order both the blondes to strand test.

I think purple shampoo is limited in what it can achieve.

Blue shampoo is used to tone down copper/brassy/orangey tones in brunette highlighted hair.

I would start with the blondes doing a strand test and see how they go. It might be enough to take down the warmth without making it brown as such. Personally I wouldn't want to put brown on top of a warm blonde shade anyway, not because of green but because I think the result would be a warm brown. Still not ash.

There are other toners (Superdrug have some) which you could look at too.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 21/05/2020 11:39

I did at at home ombré which I then put over a box of light Ash Brown from Nice & Easy.
I'm a cool medium brown naturally so it worked nicely to tone the orange ends and blend with the darker hair.
I'd go for the ash blonde colours in your case. 😊

Mnthrowaway20202 · 21/05/2020 14:33

If you want to stay light I’d recommend a bleach rinse (mix bleach with shampoo and leave on for a few minutes) then go over it with an ash or cream toner. The bleach rinse will clean the warm tones away and the toner will give you a cooler blonde shade instead. Promise it’s much easier (and gentle) than it sounds!

You could use box dye to go darker. The main thing I don’t like about box dye is that it contains a developer (bleach). So if you’re going darker (where you don’t need to lighten you hair, you just want a colour deposit) box dye unnecessarily lightens your hair, potentially causing damage to prelightened hair

SoLongFurlough · 21/05/2020 16:43

I think you have a similar hair colour to me in that I like mine quite cool toned but it seems to have got warmer over time iyswim
I used the nice n easy semi permanent in medium ash blonde to tone in the roots (I have highlights too) and it also turned out quite warm so I've bought a purple shampoo to cool it down
In my experience box dyes always end up being too warm hence why I stopped using them many years ago

WeeMadArthur · 21/05/2020 16:48

Thanks to everyone for the advice! I bought a Medium Ash Blonde today and have just done a strand test, it’s different but not too different so once my patch test is ok I’m going to go with that and see how I feel. @Mnthrowaway20202 the bleach option is far to scary for me ( and for DH who doesn’t yet realise that he is going to be my stand in hairdresser!)

Please post a photo when it’s done?? Grin

WeeMadArthur · 23/05/2020 10:40

@Mnthrowaway20202 I will if I do it, but I’ve just reread the instructions and it says not to use it at all if you’ve used gradual colour products and I have used one of those brunette shampoos and conditioners in the last few months to try and remove the brass Ines. Not sure now what will happen to my hair if I use it?

WeeMadArthur · 07/06/2020 12:51

@Mnthrowaway20202 here you go, it took me a while to get the courage up and ask DH to do it. It’s a bit darker than I expected the Medium Ash Blonde to be but it has removed the warm tones so m pleased with the results, thanks for your advice!
