What am I doing wrong? I've tried them all. Last night I tried the Bondi Sands every day tan. Applied it 15 mins after my bath. The colour is lovely but so streaky/patchy. I followed the instructions so not sure what I did wrong. I am quite fair skinned too. Please help. Thanks xx

Are you exfoliating before you apply? Are you using one of those self tan mitts? I find them very helpful to spread the formula evenly.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 17/05/2020 13:33

Your first mistake is applying straight after a bath. Should be at least 12 hours after shaving/lotions/creams etc

elaeocarpus · 17/05/2020 13:36

I found using a mitt a revelation.

MurrayTheMonk · 17/05/2020 13:37

Tanning drops are your friend OP. You add a few drops depending on your desired tan depth to your regular moisturiser or body Lotion, apply as you would the normal product (then wash your hands). Lovely even colour and don't smell of biscuit as much.
Fool proof. I've some
Skinny tan ones on the go at the moment but had Isle of Paradise before which you can get from Boots online. A little bottle lasts a long time.

Isle of paradise tanning drops .. everything else ( and I have tried everything !!) are awful on me ( see through white !! ) .. honestly a game changer ! .. I've been wearing shorts at home this year which I've never done !

Mindfullness · 17/05/2020 14:37

Thanks for all of your advice. I do use a Mitt. So I would add the drops to my bottle of moisturiser or into my hand with it in? Thank you :) X

Yes .. put a few drops into your moisturiser, it's the time of the isle of paradise ones though ( light) that are so great on pale skin .

MurrayTheMonk · 17/05/2020 14:49

I put the moisturiser in my hand, add one or two drops, give it a swirl round and then slap it on. But immediately wash your hands after or else you will end up with a very dark palm!

Jellyshoeshurtmyfeet · 17/05/2020 14:59

I also recommend Isle of Paradise tanning drops, very difficult to get it wrong.

Candyflosscookie · 17/05/2020 15:04

Do all exfoliation/shaving/hair removal 24 hours in advance.
Let's say you're applying at night. Shower/bath in the morning and apply plenty body lotion/moisturiser then. Wait several hours then apply your fake tan in small even strokes, a thin layer, with a mitt. Then go back over if need be.

Most problems come from people applying tan straight after showering when pores are too open and hot or on top of moisturiser so the tan dries into the streaks and pattern of the moisturiser.

wowfudge · 17/05/2020 15:32

I've been really pleased with Skinny Tan Coconut Mist - very easy to apply and no self tan smell.

NotaFreeloader · 17/05/2020 18:44

Isle of paradise are good or dove gradual tan. I do it every couple of days and Exfoliate well beforehand

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/05/2020 19:02

Superdrug 10 min. Apply then rinse off with water before bed.

metronome1 · 17/05/2020 19:24

As well as what the pp said about not applying straight after hair removal etc... I do apply it after a shower but not when I have shaved and with nothing else on my skin.

You need to stand in front of a mirror and be methodical. Pick an area to start and work your way up or down. So for example start with your face and work each area to your feet. You need to touch each part of your body twice or three times in both circular and up and down motions. Don't add more tan but just lightly spread and move the stuff you already put on. You need to work fast too. With tan you cannot hang around. Do not rub feet and hands but pat them.
Then don't get dressed for a long while.
Start with one that has a colour. I have been fake tanning for 15 years every week no joke! I have pretty much used every tan on the market but my absolute favourite is skinny tan coconut water. The thing is it has no colour until it has developed so its not for the first timers. Other skinny tan products are great too. Choose a lighter one. The tan and tone oil in light is good.

Search for how to apply skinny tan coconut water on you tube because there is a tutorial on there that can be used for any tan but really shows how to hit every area.

Use a good quality mit. I find the oils, creams and waters less streaky than the mouse types.

It sounds like a lot of messing around and hard work but once you get it right it takes next to no time.
I can apply a full tan in just a couple of minutes now.
Don't give up.

slipperywhensparticus · 17/05/2020 19:26

Body shop have a new one it's getting good reviews (I'm not a hun I sell NOTHING)

metronome1 · 17/05/2020 19:31

Just to add I dislike bondi sands. It washes off all patchy and can be streaky.

Mindfullness · 17/05/2020 19:53

Thanks for all the tips, I'm giving up on getting my brown legs. My face and arms are tanned but my legs take forever so I only need to do my legs!!
