How’s do people look fantastic

And make it look effortless?

It’s the Stunning but Didn’t Try Too Hard look IYSWIM

The “ how do I style my hair? I wash it and leave it to dry naturally (tinkly laugh) my top? Oh, this old thing. I never do any exercise, I walk the dog and carry my shopping in and that is it.”

Perfect hair, teeth, skin, figure, clothes.

What is their secret? I want it.

Does a silk pillowcase really work? Does it banish the crumpled face in the mornings? Where did you get yours? The White Company sell them but I’ve resisted so far.

I started this thread because I walked through my local town the other day and I saw a lady sitting out her shop (a high end nice things for nice houses type of shop). She was wearing vejas, cropped pale jeans, some sort of top, had beautiful swishy hair and I have no idea about her make up as she looked so 100% fabulous. The Whole Package.

I think the key things are:

Figure - be thin
Clothes - must fit well, be clean and look new
Hair and face - simple, clean, elegant, natural

I believe silk pillowcases are lovely and definitely help with the sleepy creases I wake up with. Great for keeping your hair smooth too.

Being slender definitely really helps (I'm not slender by the way) because clothes just hang and drape so much better on a slender frame. Correct posture also helps a lot Smile

AnaViaSalamanca · 18/05/2020 17:02

OP don't always believe those who say they didn't try. When I was in my 20s I had a couple of friends who would spend hours in front of the mirror to put together a slightly dishevelled just-out-of-bed sexy look, both makeup and clothes.

DrewByMann · 18/05/2020 17:28

Definitely agree with ana - it’s like those who say they didn’t revise for exams etc and are “naturally clever” (when they’ve been poring over books all night).

It’s like you’re seen as “vain” in uk society or shallow for discussing things like skincare/weight (not in a negative or judgemental way - just in a “I want to improve - tell me how it’s practically done”) way.

But at the same time appearance does matter? Hmm

Deathraystare · 19/05/2020 15:43

In my experience, it is sleep, diet and exercise with a bit of teeth whitening and a few facials now and then.

Well that is me well and truly fucked then! :(

OhTheRoses · 19/05/2020 20:34

The over made up look with lip fillers and botox though often looks just that.

If somebody goes to the trouble of buying and using a silk pillow case I suspect they take rather good care of themselves.

Good hair, good teeth, well applied, minimal make-up, well fitting clothes, well ironed and scrupulous cleanliness. Filed nails, polished shoes, no missing buttons, no cat hairs, discreet jewellery, enough sleep, good diet, toned body, and it may sound odd but well cared for feet - no blisters, hard skin, etc. And possibly unfashionable but a light tan.

IndecentFeminist · 20/05/2020 07:53

Slender helps, but isn't the be all and end all.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/05/2020 09:45

There is no secret, it’s a healthy lifestyle long term combined with skincare that actually does something ie retinol, acids, vit c, sunblock.

Pixiefringe · 20/05/2020 09:57

Oh man when I look at photos of myself pre babies I was almost glowing! Back when I actually slept at night! It's amazing what sleep deprivation can do to make you look dull and crap. This pregnancy I've gotten unwell and am on a tonne of medicine so I have moon face. I'm dehydrated cos i don't drink enough. I just feel i look so gross. And my front teeth have always been a bit wonky and big IMO so that doesn't help. At least i can drink more water but not much i can do about everything else! 😫🤣

EnidSugden · 20/05/2020 09:58

Bone structure is really important. Even when I was thin I had no cheekbones to speak of, my collarbones have never showed and I’ve got no neck.

Now I’m fatter and rather than being curvy and hourglass (my friend looks gorgeous fatter) I have no waist and my head is attached to my shoulders by a collection of chins.

I could win the lottery tomorrow and spend 8 hours a day on maintenance and never look nice.

lazylinguist · 20/05/2020 10:29

I can't stand the botoxed, fillered look. I read something the other day about 'facial yoga' though, which sounded kind of convincing. Might give that a try to get rid of my eye bags!

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 20/05/2020 12:27

It's not all about being thin, but good bone structure helps. I've always been chubby but the weight goes on my belly, hips and thighs so they can be disguised by a good dress. I have great collarbones and high cheekbones though so boobs up I can look great.
It's definitely in the maintenance. Weekly spray tans (honestly look at people who look polished - they usually have a tan, it make so much difference), hair cut and coloured every 6-8 weeks, nails manicured and painted (no one ever looks good with chipped nail polish), eyebrows done fortnightly, probably had their eyelashes done as well.
It sounds a bit but just spending 1-2 hrs a week on these things will mean they can just roll out of bed and look good still.

Oh and give up the booze and fags and drink water instead. Even without sleep that will take years off you - I haven't had an uninterrupted night for over 4 years but can easily pass for 10years younger than I am.

queenofarles · 20/05/2020 13:02

Face massages/yoga are actually really good, I’ve been doing them for a few months.

IMO looking good when you are no longer in your 20s Involves a lot of time and Money.

good haircuts/colour, are not cheap. So is good skincare. Staying in shape takes a lot of effort, for me it’s the hardest bit, I don’t enjoy it but it’s a must.
Clothes. There are some good, reasonably priced things on the high street, so many places are working with natural fabrics and they are pretty good.

rosecreakybex · 20/05/2020 14:58

Before I became old and fat and stopped giving a shit, I used to use an app where you could create a wardrobe of everything you own - clothes, accessories, shoes... and then plan outfits.

It would throw up combinations for you to try and I'd always feel "put together".

A good staple wardrobe with classic colours and shapes you know suit you.

But Quality over quantity.

Be thin.

Sleep well and drink lots of water

CafetiereCoffee · 20/05/2020 15:29

Good lord, what is that app? And do you have to scan in every single one of your clothes?

OP posts:
rosecreakybex · 20/05/2020 15:33

So they had pretty much everything in there already, or close enough

rosecreakybex · 20/05/2020 15:34

Stylebook it was called

copycopypaste · 20/05/2020 15:42

Money and sleep

Mangofandangoo · 20/05/2020 15:51

I think perhaps good genes help and knowing what suits you.

Also things like clean hair/nails - they don't have to be manicured but neat and tidy. Also I think teeth and eyebrows are important (not overly done but again just neat and tidy)

binkyboinky · 20/05/2020 16:04

Everyone has their 'level'. I do my best but like everyone says clean hair and minimal makeup, plus the odd bit of jewellery (IMO), can go a long way to looking polished even if you don't do much else.

I wash and moisturise my face & body every day. I can't go out without at least some eye makeup (concealer, mascara), but these days I forgo foundation and lipstick (what's the point if you have to wear a mask anyway?!)

I've only had a professional facial once in my life, but I do occasionally use a scrub and a mask at home (Simple) and Nivea cream. That might be too much by some people's standards but everyone tells me I look way younger than I am. So not complaining!

I'm not too fussed about perfect clothes, as long as what I'm wearing is not too tight, especially over my belly. I find clothes that 'skim' me give the illusion that I look slimmer than I am. I definitely know my colours and I won't wear a colour that I don't find myself comfortable in, it really affects my mood and personality, like I'm in the wrong skin or something. I don't feel 'classy' or slim in the wrong colour.

I do my own eyebrows and I use Flawless on my face/tache hair, it makes my skin look so much clearer and I love it. I don't paint my nails, but in summer I HAVE to paint my toenails - I cannot abide unpainted toenails in sandals, especially mine! Yeuch.

I don't know if I give off a "polished" vibe, but these are OK by me. As long as I'm clean and groomed to a level I'm happy with I'm OK. No one's run screaming away from me in a long time so perhaps I'm doing alright!

One thing though - If I'm having a bad hair day my entire day is totally FUCKED. If I get a promotion, get proposed to, and win the lottery on the same day I'll still be a total utter bitch if my hair's looking like shit. Why is that?!

binkyboinky · 20/05/2020 16:05

Soz - that was a bit of an essay!

Mangofandangoo · 20/05/2020 17:00

Also I don't think it's about being thin but I think looking healthy is good. You can look healthy at any weight/size too

Sidge · 20/05/2020 18:40

I think a lot is genetic.

Slim, good bone structure. Instantly makes you look more elegant.

Polished is very different to painted - funnily enough the lip fillers, hair extensions, mask of make up women tend to look much LESS fantastic than those that go for the “less is more” philosophy. Clear skin, bright eyes, glossy hair, simple classic clothes with a more natural look is much more appealing IMO and looks more classy.

Simple structured clothing, in neutral colours, with good posture looks so elegant and appealing.

bingowingsmcgee · 20/05/2020 18:51

enid solidarity from another flat faced no necked sister fistbump

PersonaNonGarter · 21/05/2020 06:15

OP, one thing that helps is ironing. Have all your clothes in a good, clean, crisp state - no pulling on yesterday’s jeans and top from the chair beside the bed.

If your clothes are neat and clean to start with, you are a long way there. Next is clean hair.
