Muttoning around dressed as lamb

As the title says, I’m definitely a mutton dresses as lamb.
Not because I want to look young but because in my mind I always feel young- no more than 18 yrs old- definitely not 46 years I am!
Is anyone here like that?
Wearing youngsters clothing?
Imagine skinnies, brigh tops, colourful bags, coinverse.
I must add I got about 12 denim jackets- none are plain- mostly are embroidered with florals or sequins or diamantess, some have stars print, some have writing on.
I must add that I am conscious of my age,
I’m not a bohemian hipster.
Anytime I buy something new I ask will I look foolish?
Yesterday I bough a rare Topshop jacket covered in diamanté’s- that would be definitely looked great on teens..somehow I could not resist.
Shinny stuff attracts me..
Is anyone like me?
None of my friends are like that so I almost feel guilty when I see them as they usually wear normal plain clothes..

Me! I just can't resist it, it's so pretty and cool. I also worry about looking silly but I just don't like the older stuff and also I'm still quite thin so I can fit into the younger stuff. My style hasn't changed since I was 20... that's probably a bad thing..sorry.. not sorry.

ofwarren · 07/05/2020 20:40

You sound great!
If you like it, wear it!

Rathersexyfortysomethingblonde · 07/05/2020 20:43

Hello. Thank you. I did not expect anyone to reply lol.
I do like my clothes.
Few months ago my husband he asked what makes me happy- I said : just to open my wardrobe and see all clothes! He could not believe me..
Lol.
I must say my clothes are not expensive.. just H&M, Next, Topshop.

I'm the same but hadn't really thought about it like that Confused
What ' should ' we be wearing I wonder?
Hmmm sensible slacks with a blouse ? Hehehe I could never imagine wearing old lady clothes ! Even when I get really old ( I'm 44 btw)

Rathersexyfortysomethingblonde · 07/05/2020 20:51

@Dontforgetyourbrolly
Hahaha I suppose.
When I was young and growing up I remember thinking when I will be adult I have to wear suits and all the serous blouses ..I just can’t hehe too.
But then my mum always wore and wears youngish clothes too so.
Maybe it’s hereditary lol.

I saw a skirt when I was doing the weekly shop earlier and thought it was nice but didn't buy it because it was too middle aged looking and at 50, I still prefer much younger looking clothes Grin

Beermoney · 08/05/2020 06:31

Oh dont say that! Wear what you like!

Mascotte · 08/05/2020 06:33

Total mutton here and sticking with it 😃

Rathersexyfortysomethingblonde · 08/05/2020 10:01

Here a pic of my Topshop diamanté’s denim jacket.. oh my...

I’m in my 50s and my dc say to me, why do you dress like a teenager?

I’m not quite in your league with the denim and sparkle though!

AvocadoPrime · 08/05/2020 10:06

Wear what makes you feel comfortable and happy! I like the jacket!

thebabessavedme · 08/05/2020 10:09

its a lovely jacket and i would love it, im 57, my idea of mutton as lamb is showing too much old wrinkling flesh, i dont like looking at it so why would anyone else? i do however have a decent pair pins so i can still pull off over the knee dresses, i love clothes and fashion and im not about to start wearing elasticated waist items [ugh]

my much younger friend told me that i have a 'boho luxe' look going on Grin i'll take that thank you!

EdithHope · 08/05/2020 10:17

Lovely jacket, I'm sure you'll rock it!

Life is short, dress how you want, dress for yourself and be happy.

Terralee · 08/05/2020 10:18

I'm 43 and will wear short stuff as I've got good legs but I cover up my top half as I'm self conscious of my chest it's too big!
And I rarely wear heels I prefer trainers/ other flats.

I don't have any children or partner (sadly) to judge my clothing and say don't wear that so I find it difficult to know if I'm getting it right.
My friends dress more conservatively but they struggle with knowing what to wear too.

TooTrueToBeGood · 08/05/2020 10:20

Better mutton dressed as lamb than mutton dressed as mutton surely?

Backtothenewme · 08/05/2020 10:20

I'm 50 and I hear what I want to. Jean's have been a major player in my life and I'll wear them till I physically cant. I have a pair that are at least 20 years old and I pull them out occasionally and wear them they are fab. Dress to make your heart smile not anyone else's. I think a hoodie Jean's and converse is a suitable look at any age.

Oldraver · 08/05/2020 10:21

Where what you want. Yesterday I actually looked for frilled ankle socks as I just fancied some with a little tea dress

And I know it's tongue in cheek but ditch the 'mutton dressed as lamb' sctick. As soon as this horrible phrase dies out the better

thedevilinablackdress · 08/05/2020 10:22

Enough of the ageism. Even if it is tongue in cheek.
Let's stop shaming ourselves for getting older.
Wear what you like, it sounds great.

Floisme · 08/05/2020 10:25

I believe in wearing clothes that make you happy and that abusing people for the way they dress is vile.
I also believe that old age and middle age are life stages, not character flaws, and I don't think it's cool to use them as shorthand for boring or ugly.
This thread also demonstrates why I don't think the word 'mutton' can be reclaimed.

NiteFlights · 08/05/2020 10:28

When I was young and growing up I remember thinking when I will be adult I have to wear suits and all the serous blouses

I thought - God knows why, as I grew up in a fairly dull village in one of the Home Counties - that when I grew up I would wear the sort of thing they wore on Dallas.

Love the thread title btw.

Kenworthington · 08/05/2020 10:32

This is the inside of one of my wardrobes OP. I am 44. I wear what I jolly well want to. None of my friends particularly dress like me. And yet I get complimented all the time, often by strangers , on my ‘style’. You do you , as they say

One of my elderly neighbours said yesterday, that back in the day there was almost a uniform (dress code) for each stage of your life and how wonderful that it doesn’t exist anymore and we can just dress for us not what everyone expects us to wear. Wise words I think! If you feel good and you look good then wear what makes you happy! As a previous poster said the mutton dressed as lamb phrase needs to die out.

Rathersexyfortysomethingblonde · 08/05/2020 10:50

Awww I’m happy it’s not only me who does not like boring plain clothes.
As I said all my friends dress in grey/ black/ navy clothes.
I don’t wear mini skirts or any skirts though my legs would deserve to show off really but I just generally don’t wear heals etc..
Here is pics of my denim jackets ..they all have something on... even badges, embroidered, prints etc..
