Muttoning around dressed as lamb

As the title says, I’m definitely a mutton dresses as lamb.
Not because I want to look young but because in my mind I always feel young- no more than 18 yrs old- definitely not 46 years I am!
Is anyone here like that?
Wearing youngsters clothing?
Imagine skinnies, brigh tops, colourful bags, coinverse.
I must add I got about 12 denim jackets- none are plain- mostly are embroidered with florals or sequins or diamantess, some have stars print, some have writing on.
I must add that I am conscious of my age,
I’m not a bohemian hipster.
Anytime I buy something new I ask will I look foolish?
Yesterday I bough a rare Topshop jacket covered in diamanté’s- that would be definitely looked great on teens..somehow I could not resist.
Shinny stuff attracts me..
Is anyone like me?
None of my friends are like that so I almost feel guilty when I see them as they usually wear normal plain clothes..

Wear whatever makes you happy, even if it's elasticated waist items Hmm

HundredMilesAnHour · 08/05/2020 10:59

my idea of mutton as lamb is showing too much old wrinkling flesh, i dont like looking at it so why would anyone else

I agree with this (so I tend to be covered up but then flashing my flesh has never been my style anyway) but other than that, I wear what I want when I want.

I'm 50 and yesterday I wore this boilersuit from Palones.

If you want to wear the jacket OP, wear the jacket. Personally I wouldn't but that's because it's not my taste/style rather than being an age related reason. If you love it, just enjoy it!

Wear what you like, if you love it wear it. But tbh no 'youngsters' are wearing embroidered or diamanté studded denim jackets.

user200000000 · 08/05/2020 11:03

Mutton dressed as lamb is ageist. Wear what the hell you like, even show off your wrinkly old skin.Hmm

user200000000 · 08/05/2020 11:06

Maybe everyone over the age of 60 should wear head to toe covering so as not to offend others who don't like looking at wrinkly old skin.

Rathersexyfortysomethingblonde · 08/05/2020 11:15

@HundredMilesAnHour
I agree too. I never show my flash too much either.. as I mentioned above I never particularly liked wearing skirts or dresses- maybe it’s it’s rooted in my head and mind when I was little and growing up all the old ladies around me wore skirts and loose blouses.
Last time I wore a dress was in two years ago at christening.
And I felt strange in those heels.
I prefer skinny jeans and converse..
I managed to dig out a pic. I though the dress was appropriate, though everyone wore dark clothes..the dress was green with paisley print..

Why why why would you feel you need to justify what you wear??
And how is age relevant? Perish the thought that anyone would know that you have lived long enough to 'age'. Jeez, life is hard enough without being ageist about yourself.

And I agree with others, 'mutton dressed as lamb' as a phrase needs to be executed.

ANoiseAnnoys · 08/05/2020 11:19

I don’t think the stuff you describe sounds muttonish at all - it all sounds fairly casual but with a fun edge.

To me, mutton dressed as lamb is wearing skirts up to your crotch, crop tops, tight cheap-looking dresses and sky-high stripper heels.

Skinny jeans, converse and diamanté’s are not “young” imo.

Nighting · 08/05/2020 11:25

Wear what you like.

Maybe try to avoid judging other women in their boring old navy clothes with their horrid wrinkly skin and disgusting elasticated waists?

Rathersexyfortysomethingblonde · 08/05/2020 11:27

@ANoiseAnnoys
Thank you.perhaps I’m not yet in that stage yet but I think I’m getting thereL
I have a denim jacket with some writing on the back, my daughter who is 9 yrs old rolled her eyes and said : mum why are dressing up like teenager?
Compare to the other mums at the schoolgates I feel I’m sort of sticking out in pink denim jacket and sequinned converse lol.

ANoiseAnnoys · 08/05/2020 11:35

I live in a very middle class area where lots of the mums seem have a uniform and wear the same labels. I’m always drawn towards people who look like they don’t give a crap and just wear what they like, not follow a uniform. There’s one mum in particular who is a bit of an old hippy and wears doc martins and flowing peasant skirts - I love her! I would be interested in being mates with you too in a pink denim jacket and sparkly converse coz I’d think “I’d bet I could have a laugh with her”. I hate people who take themselves too seriously.

DelphiniumBlue · 08/05/2020 11:41

Wear what you like! I'm 60 and like someone else said, don't put flabby/wrinkly areas on show most of the time ( although I might if it's hot and I'm not trying to impress anyone.
I've noticed my sons comment favourably when I'm wearing something oversized but cool, like All Saints hoody. In lockdown I'm living in leggings and long loose tops. At work I wear black jeans and smarter long loose tops ( silk shirt, cashmere jumper, but usually casual). I'm partial to leopard print and strong colours. I still like the sort of clothes that I always did, I'm still me, I just don't show off my absence of a waistline and less than perfect thighs and upper arms.
But if I wanted to I would!

user200000000 · 08/05/2020 11:44

Most of the 40 somethings I know wear skinny jeans and converse. I don't think you are unique.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 08/05/2020 11:47

I'm in my 50's. When I get to see my 27 year old daughter again I shall be asking for the jeans, top and biker boots that she borrowed the day she went back home as all her stuff was apparently "ready for the wash". Grin.

IndecentFeminist · 08/05/2020 11:52

Agreed. This just sounds like an 'aren't I unique, no-one else is quite like me' post, all the while sounding very normal.

TwentyViginti · 08/05/2020 11:57

I'm in my 60s and live in skinny jeans/leggings with long tops or dresses (cos I'm fat). I get told off by my DC if I wear anything remotely frumpy Grin.

I don't like like my bingo wings being on display, but on hot days I let them wobble free! Grin

TwentyViginti · 08/05/2020 11:58

I want some sparkly trainers now.

floppybit · 08/05/2020 11:59

@HundredMilesAnHour that boiler suit is bloody fabulous

Stephie0x3 · 08/05/2020 12:14

If it’s what you feel comfortable in OP, you wear it! Nobody has the right to say otherwise xx

thebabessavedme · 08/05/2020 14:00

oh blimey! when I mentioned 'wrinkly old skin' I meant mine! and no, I dont like looking at it, it reminds me of my mortality Grin, and as for 'elasticated waist' clothing I was actually thinking of how both my dgms looked at my age, which was OLD, their generation tended to have a pretty tough physical life, often with not a great deal of money and certainly not much to spend in the way of choice, they had nothing like the freedom/money/choice that we have.

and btw, if an individual likes to show off their wrinkly old skin thats fine, I just prefer to look at young firm skin and to make it even more sexist, I like young fresh male skin, all ripped and tattooed Grin so kill me! Grin

HundredMilesAnHour · 08/05/2020 14:04

@floppybit The boilersuit at Palones and Harvey Nicks sold out really quickly but for some crazy reason, Asos have a few and they're selling them half-price!

www.asos.com/palones/palones-hackney-colour-block-boiler-suit-in-khaki-tan/prd/20097298?clr=&colourWayId=60008332&SearchQuery=palones

It washes really well and doesn't need ironing. And I can't say how I know but the fabric was actually made for Burberry (so it's top quality). (Palones use archive fabric for all their clothes).

floppybit · 08/05/2020 14:10

@HundredMilesAnHour thanks for that, but I'm clearly too fat for their clothes. The Large is only size 12 and I'm a 14! Sad

moveandmove · 08/05/2020 14:13

I wouldn't say a diamanté denim jacket was very teenager-ish. Converse are also quite mumsy (sorry I know mn hate that phrase but couldn't think what else to use). Teenagers are all about the Vans (black and definitely not sequinned). I think you're fine op.

RingaRosie · 08/05/2020 14:19

There’s this thing I’d love to do... Go back in time to all the clothes I’ve ever owned & get back some I gave away, for whatever reason, at difference stages of my life.
I know, at the time, it was about moving on to the next stage / age. But, I had some great stuff that I’d wear now. I tend to edit my wardrobe, rather than clear-out, though, so I still keep “my style”.

Rathersexyfortysomethingblonde · 08/05/2020 15:43

@moveandmove

The diamanté’s jacket is stunning.. not sure how will I mix and match it but I had to have it.
I also spotted this one and thinking that’s lovely..
Obviously the girl wearing it looks 18 years old but I think i could make work with black skinnies?
