Thinking of getting a buzz cut!

Ok maybe I need talking down but I’m really thinking of getting my husband to buzz cut my hair tomorrow! I would then have completely grey hair (I’m fine with the grey!). I’m mid 40s with shoulder length dark hair(with long grey roots!) and a long face! Any comments appreciated ;)

I stopped dying 3 years ago and. It's the best thing I ever did for my hair. I was tired of chasing the roots every 3 weeks. I grew it out for 4 months covering with root spray when I went out. It was a hard time but I was determined. Then had a short pixi. The hairdresser kept long layers on the top and bleached and toned the ends. Now in lockdown, my hair is thick, healthy and no roots to worry about. It's shiny too. There are some good examples of grey transitions on the FB group 'grayandproud'.
If you do it, use the longest shield of clippers on the top. Do you have 8 or 6? Around 4 on sides and 2 on nape. There are YouTube videos on how to blend - it requires a scoop motion.
You can still buy clippers with shields from Argos.

I've said on another thread on this subject that I had a shaved head in my early twenties. I loved it. But I was pretty and thin then.
The thing is, when you grow it out, it takes years, even to get a decent short hair style.
It is a big commitment. I really don't think that you should do it to be honest. Now is not the time to make rash decisions.
If you don't like it, it will be yet another thing to feel down about.

ditavonteesed · 03/05/2020 05:50

I did mine a few weeks ago, I love it and it's so easy to look after. Like I no longer have to think about hair ever which is really liberating.

Hoohaahoo · 03/05/2020 05:52

Why do you want to? Long hair is easy enough to maintain, just pop a dye on your roots if you want to cover the grey.

It’s only hair at the end of the day so go for it if you think you’ll like it. Just be prepared that it’s a drastic change!

FuckingDoneWithIt · 03/05/2020 06:03

I just did mine and its a revolution for me. I love it.

Eloisedublin123 · 03/05/2020 20:06

Thanks so much ladies! I didn’t have the nerve! (Didn’t have a great day to be honest!)
But thanks so much for all your suggestions and responses!

I think that you made the right decision. Hope you have a better day tomorrow!

Its something I've always wanted to try - just to say that I've done it.
Hair grows so of you don't like it, it wouldn't be like that for long 😊 xx

ElizabethMainwaring · 04/05/2020 08:13

Oh believe me, it is there for long.
It took me ages. When it's about 1 to 2 inches long it looks appalling. You look really neglected and deranged, so you cave in and shave it all of again.
Repeat ad nauseum.

swampytiggaa · 04/05/2020 08:23

I’ve done mine... number 2 all over 🙂 planning on keeping it like this as I love it 🙂

I went through chemo so didn't have much choice. I looked awful, it took forever to grow into a style I was happy with.

Eloisedublin123 · 04/05/2020 10:09

Swampy I love it!!

@Eloisedublin123 I love it. I’ve hated my hair for such a long time and now I don’t!

ilovecherries · 04/05/2020 11:13

I have alopecia, so not much choice - I have a few patches of hair that I shave at a 0 every Sunday or I would look like a mangy dog. Having said that, it’s liberating, having come to terms with it I (mostly) love it, and I can’t even begin to imagine faffing with hair these days. If I want hair - well that’s what wigs are for.

ofwarren · 04/05/2020 11:23

Your hair looks great swampy!

Fromthebirdsnest · 04/05/2020 11:28

To be honest very few pull it off .. Unless your very young with amazing cheekbones and strikingly beautiful it looks terrible x wait until you can go to the hairdressers and have a restyle x

swampytiggaa · 04/05/2020 11:45

Thanks @Fromthebirdsnest 😉

ElizabethMainwaring · 04/05/2020 15:23

@swampytiggaa
It does look good! Well done you. You've got a nicely proportioned face and will carry it off well.
I wish I could again. I'm just a bit too fat now. Sigh.

KimTate · 04/05/2020 15:43

Yeah, I got DH to do mine 2 weeks ago. Its growing a bit now, I might do it on a number 2 next time, this time I used the beard trimmer setting on 18, which I think is 18mm.

It feels so free and takes a second to wash, no brushing, I quite like itGrin

NerforMuffin · 04/05/2020 16:25

I'm a size 20 and have no cheekbones and I think my shaved head looks fabulous.

I don't GAF what anyone else thinks :)

ilovecherries · 04/05/2020 19:24

^ what muffin said. Really sick of some of the judgemental crap that goes on here. I’m 62, my chin and chest merge seamlessly together these days, and my bald head - the one I’ve had for over 40 years - still looks awesome. swampy, you look great. I’m sure the OP will also look fabulous. We are more than our jawlines.

Eloisedublin123 · 05/05/2020 08:22
