Undercuts

Seen a few people mention undercuts and wondering if I should give it a go? I have shoulder length hair, wavy/annoying curls, very thick, quite coarse and a lot of it. At the hairdresser I usually have thinning scissors on it. It has to be thinned out otherwise I can't cope with it and for the same reason, it's always above shoulders in length. I know it needs a cut when it takes me longer than normal to wash it. It feels unhealthy and looks drab. It's just getting scraped back every day.
OH not keen on doing it for me, wondering if I should contact my hairdresser and ask her advice on how to do it at home.
Anyone done this or had it done by a hairdresser and can recommend it?
I'm.not precious at all about my hair, so not too arsed if it goes wrong!

I've got very thick curly hair and had an undercut to thin it. It definitely did. I used to get the undercut part re-done in the barbers rather than the hairdressers though as it was significantly cheaper and if I'm honest going to the all-male barbers was fun :-) Also you can go from average boring long lady hair when it's down to alternative grungy hair when it's tied up.

I’ve got an undercut and I’d recommend it over thinning! I’ve got a blunt bob just above my shoulders which sits way better with the undercut.
I maintain it myself between hairdresser trips. As for doing it for the first time though, I found it tricky! I attempted it, after watching YouTube videos, but I was just making a mess so got a hairdresser to do it! You need to get a nice straight line and that just wasn’t happening for me! If OH can help you with that bit then it’d be easier!

I loved mine, made my thick, massive hair much easier to look after. The only thing i didn't like was the maintenance, it needed cutting every 2 weeks in order to look neat, and i struggled to get my DP to do it and couldn't afford to pay someone to do it that often.
