Conditioner for very knotty hair

Hi all,

My hair has always been quite knotty, but is so much worse after I wash it - I really struggle to get a brush through it. My hair is very fine (but there's a lot of it) and highlighted, which is where the problem is I think.

Does anyone have any recommendations for conditioners that would work? I have found in the past that wash out conditioner doesn't work with my type of hair - I literally don't notice a difference once it's washed out and I try to brush. I've also tried a lot of leave in conditioners and find that some work for the problem (but leave my hair feeling quite heavy and a bit greasy) or just don't work.

Any advice gratefully received!

Aveda damage remedy helps my fine hair

What type of hair do you have? Fine, thick, course? Is it very long? Is it dyed? Is it bleached?

I’ve recently switched over to the OGX brand for my shampoo and conditioner and it’s made a huge difference to my hair. I do leave my conditioner in for as long as I can in the shower and rinse it last thing.

If your hair is bleached then you might want to have a look at doing some protein treatments they can help massively with the condition of bleached hair. That in turn will help with tangles and knots.

@ThanksForAllTheFish - She literally said it’s very fine, lots of it and it’s highlighted.

What about a pre-shampoo treatment. I like Philip Kingsley elastizer, but super drug are doing a sort of dupe.

You slather it on damp hair, put a shower cap on, leave it as long as you can and then wash and dry hair as normal.

Or a couple of drops of oil after conditioning. Not so much that it makes it greasy, but just enough to get that comb gliding through?

In fact, that's just made me remember my mom doing hot oil treatments. Little ohials of oil that you put in boiling water to heat up and then cut them open and put them on your hair. What a memory!

@DonLewis My mum used to have them too! I think they were VO5 hot oil that she had - wow, brings back a lot of memories 😊

Thanks everyone for the tips, much appreciated!

I have similar hair. I have a wide toothed plastic comb in the shower. I use loads of conditioner on the ends of my hair then run the comb through and wait a few minutes before washing out.

My hairdresser suggested it and my hair is in much better condition as I get less split ends. It also doesn't really matter which conditioner I use

ilovemydogandMrObama · 30/04/2020 12:01

@misstoblerone85 - you beat me to it. Smile

DD2's hair can get terrible, but agree with miss above. I put on loads of conditioner, and comb through.

We use Faith in Nature coconut, but as others have said, any conditioner will make a difference.

My hair is fine but knotty after conditioning even though I've tried many different conditioners.

Charles Worthington Detangling Spray is a game changer!
Just spray it in your hair after washing and it's easier to comb.

sleepwhenidie · 30/04/2020 13:05

I have the same type of hair and same problem. I use Charles Worthington Moisture Seal leave in conditioner (either as well as normal conditioner but sometimes instead).

BeetrootRocks · 30/04/2020 13:08

Bought some Cantu detangler in boots for DD it's awesome.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 30/04/2020 13:14

Combing it through really makes a difference imo...I would say my hair was similar to yours and it's the bleach. let's not even mention the static!!I looked like a dandelion once it was brushed, and that was essentially a waste of time cos once i had all the knots out it was so static it would just re tangle itself.

I ditched the bleach a good few years back now and the condition of my hair is so much better...texture is a bit different but that's the greys for you!

Palmers coconut oil leave in conditioner spray. It's an absolute game changer
I discovered it a couple of years ago and use it every single time I wash my hair, and sometimes between washes as a rectangle. Its amazing stuff

Itsywitsyteenyweeny · 30/04/2020 13:15
  • rectangle??? WTF, I mean detangler Hmm
doobiedop · 01/05/2020 09:05

I have similar hair & love Khiels olive oil conditioner

TrulyThere · 01/05/2020 13:02

My hair is fine, highlighted and tangles easily. I wet my hair, condition first and comb through. Then wash. Then condition and comb through again and rinse out. I try and use a silicone free conditioner as I don’t like build up. Using Pantene rose water shampoo and conditioner at the moment (silicone free).
I’m pleased with them
