Lob it off or no?

Hairdressers are opening soon where I live.

Throughout confinement (it's been quite a while here), I dreamed of chopping off my longer hair into a lob. I think it will be about 5 inches off. I'm quite shy and conservative about my appearance (don't like dramatic changes and really don't like attracting attention). Should I do it?

Has anyone else made the same change and liked or loathed it? Any advice?

Chopped off my own hair into a lob the other day and LOVE it, has taken ten years off me even if a bit wonky.

My husband & daughter cut 6 inches off my hair last week using a meter rule & a pair of kitchen scissors! I’m very happy with it ( it’s just above my shoulders now) much easier to deal with as I have very very thick curly hair

Big big worry that I'll look older (40 this year and very hung up about it).

Terrible photo attached (on a different phone due to confinement antics).

Also it's quite a lot more than 5 inches. Shock

A lob is fine, a bob would look aging.

You will get more attention from people who knew you with longer hair in aw have you had your hair cut? I like your hair etc.

You will also need to style it a bit more to get some volume. With a lob you can still do a little pony tail so you can have it off your face..

Another change that looks dramatic is a fringe.. you could keep the length have a fringe or change colour.

Chochito · 29/04/2020 09:33

Thanks, HailGail, yes, I am shy about those initial comments, even though it's perfectly natural and I am otherwise a confident adult who gets up and gives presentations and talks etc. every day (online at the moment).

I don't think I would like a fringe, or that it would suit me. I run and go to the gym every day and play sports, and live in a warm climate, so I think it would be a sweaty mess most of the time, and also not great with my face shape.

Well I've made the appointment for Tuesday! Excited! Mostly that I could get an appointment so quickly!

What is the length difference between bob and lob?

I did this about 4,5 yrs ago. I really liked it and kept it at that shorter length for quite a while.

But I’ve been trying to grow it back long now for the last 18 months/2 yrs (it’s taking ages!) as looking back through photos (there aren’t many of me) I realised I suited longer hair much better than bobbed, or lobbed! But I really do have a very very round face. You don’t so I do think you’d suit a lob. A lob, I think should rest on your collarbone? Or perhaps a bit longer? Whereas a bob is shorter, sort of sits on top or above your shoulders.

Lily193 · 29/04/2020 11:20

I personally wouldn't speaking as someone who tried a lob and hated it. I love the versatility of long hair.

nzeire · 29/04/2020 11:30

You have beautiful hair! A lob would be gorgeous on you as well as if you kept it long.

I’m a huge long hair fan, and chopped mine a couple of years ago. The comments were TORTURE. I bloody love it though, and have kept it lobbed for over 2 years now.

I say go for it! If it’s long enough for a dude clip or short pony, you can still create lots of different looks x

brassbrass · 29/04/2020 11:35

Go for it, it will look thicker but still long enough to put in pony tail for the gym etc.

Chochito · 30/04/2020 20:27

Thanks, everyone. I have the appointment for Tuesday, feeling very nervous but also excited.

Lily193 Why did you hate it?

OP posts:
Chochito · 30/04/2020 23:57

also worried my face is too fat

VenusClapTrap · 01/05/2020 11:59

I did it and hated it. Grew it back. A decade later did it again. Hated it. Grew it back.

Older and wiser now; I won’t do it again.

Chochito

I love styling my long hair with curlers, tongs etc and having enough hair to be able to braid it or wear it up in different ways. With a lob, nothing ever seemed to look right except wearing it down and straight or in a basic ponytail. Even changing the part didn't work which I do regularly with my long hair. Obviously that's just me, but I did miss the versatility of the extra length.

VenusClapTrap Why did you hate it?

Lily193 How long did it take to grow back?

Do you think I should try it or will I regret? 😬😳

I think go for it.
I'm so jealous you can go to the hairdressers soon!
I wonder how long it might be in the UK til they are open. (Not that I will be brave enough to go as I'm fully embracing lockdown and can't remember how to act normally I don't think!)

Chochito · 02/05/2020 13:30

Thanks terrigrey. As a shy person when it comes to my appearance I'm feeling quite confident.

We have only been allowed out for exercise here today for the first time in over 50 days. So while I am super grateful to go to the hairdresser this week, I've really missed the outdoors.

Appointment is tomorrow, starting to feel nervous and spend ages gazing at myself in the mirror.

OP posts:
VenusClapTrap · 04/05/2020 14:11

I hated it because it didn’t suit me. And it needed to be blown dry and faffed with, whereas long hair can be bunged in a ponytail on a bad hair day.

But that’s not to say you won’t like yours! We are all different.

Lily193 · 04/05/2020 15:01

Chochito I would say two years to get it back to how I wanted it - I have a single long layer at the back to keep some movement and then light layers around my face from cheek bone length to the ends. I think you have to try it to see - I did and it wasn't for me but you may love it. GOOD LUCK!

brassbrass · 04/05/2020 15:14

I'm envious of your appt tomorrow! Wish I could get to a hairdresser, no idea how long before they will be accessible again. Go and enjoy it!

Chochito · 04/05/2020 17:54

I don't really style my hair at the moment, I just wash and go (don't blow-dry or anything). Will that change if I get it cut off?

OP posts:
VenusClapTrap · 04/05/2020 18:03

It did change for me. But it probably depends on your hair, and how well behaved it is.

NC4Now · 04/05/2020 18:06

I’ve just grown mine out. It’s taken two years. It was nice for a change but much more faff than long hair, and I just didn’t feel like me with shorter hair.
