At home hair dye

Have been having my hair highlighted blonde for the last 15 years or so, but haven't had it done for about 6 months. My hair is naturally mid brown colour.
Anyway, I dyed it using Garnier olia 10.1 very light ash blonde. It looks ok, much lighter but slightly yellowy/orange which I’m hoping a purple shampoo/toner will help.
To avoid this in the first place should I have used a lighter colour? I didn’t really want it to look bleach blonde. If I did use a lighter colour could I then use a bit of a darker shade over the top?
If I had used a darker blonde to start with, would it have looked more orangey from where the natural colour isnt fully removed?

If your hair is naturally mid brown, then I think 10.1 is too light a colour. 10 is the lightest base colour you could have chosen. Box dyes come with a certain peroxide in that's not tailored to your hair, so you only get so many levels of 'lift'. The reason your hair probably looks orangey or yellow is because the you cannot achieve so many levels of lift with a box you-you most likely had bleach highlights before(do not attempt bleach at home) the best bet would have been to put an 8.1 or a colour with an 8 on the box as this would have a achieved a medium blonde and hopefully would have looked less orange as it is a couple of shades darker than 10. Sorry if none of that makes sense, havent had coffee yet

But yes try a purple shampoo as they do really help, and if that does nothing I would probs stick a base level 9 or 8 colour over the top to help tone it all down

Thanks so much @Mojitomogul that is really helpful, I think I thought that the lighter the colour shown on the box the lighter it would make my hair. Luckily I have a spare 9 box in the cupboard so if the purple shampoo doesnt work I can try that, should’ve just used the 9 in the first place

No worries! I hope I've given sound advice.. it's hard without a picture but it sounds like it shouldn't be too hard to fix. You want the number after the dot to be either a 1 which neutralises orange or a 2 which neutralises yellow, but a just a base 9 would work too.

I use olia too. I use the darker shades of blonde, can’t remember which exactly, ? 8 I’d go upstairs and check but I’ve just settled on the sofa and the dog is on my legs (we are both exhausted!).
I found that the lighter ones (I used to use 9, I think, ) faded/ bleached in the sun, and looked unnatural.
My background hair colour is mid brown, with lots of grey last few years.
The colours I use are not usually on the shelf in Tesco or chemists around here and I get them from Superdrug online. Anyway, the darker colour is a bit too dark straight away after applying it, but after a few washes and wears it settles.

Be careful about using purple shampoo on freshly bleached hair. There was recent thread about someone whose hair absorbed the purple shampoo and the hair went purple.

Sorry to hijack but I have highlighted hair and naturally brown hair. What colour brown dye could I use to match with my roots please?

Sorry mintlegs hard to advise without a pic but maybe a base level 6 (dark blonde) or level 7 (medium blonde) would help to blur the roots into the highlights. You won't get a highlighted effect but it will help blur the contrast of the dark root against the blonde. As for the tone of go for a more ashy one.. so like a 6.1 or maybe 6.13 which has a tiny bit of golden tone in it.
