How can I get rid of my flakey scalp please??

Iv had it on and off before but have had it permanently since December. Nizoral works but it messes up my colour so not an option to use that. Currently using head and shoulders for coloured hair but that isn’t getting rid either.

Iv been putting vitamin e hair and skin oil on my scalp over night and that helps but not ideal as leaves pillow case rank.

I really want to get rid of this as my hair is dark so it’s visible. Can anyone recommend how to get rid of this permanently that won’t affect my colour??

I would say you need to look at taking a therapeutic amount rather than the recommend daily allowance. Once things improve then take less.

justilou1 · 27/04/2020 00:17

Depends on the cause of the flakey scalp. If nizoral works, it sounds like you have a problem with yeast production or seborrheic dermatitis. Do your eyebrows also get itchy and flakey? Does your scalp get greasy if you don’t use nizoral? If it’s a yeast problem you may need an oral treatment (GP) or if it’s seborrheic dermatitis you may need to see dermatologist who specializes in scalp conditions.

This lavender & tea tree shampoo bar totally sorted flakes and itchiness for me and my daughter. (I also occasionally had the little bumpy scalp spots, that are sore, weep and crust.) So many other things either didn’t sort it,or irritated it more eg Argan Oil! I’d unsuccessfully tried shampoos by Aveda, body shop, Lush, various other expensive brands but this £3 shampoo bar has totally sorted it. (Other bonus is it has no nasties in it and smells lovely.)
I would also recommend the Eucerin Dermo-Capillaire treatment from up thread,as that does stop the itch immediately. (Use plenty, massage into scalp firmly and leave it on head for 5mins before you rinse off.) Eucerin shampoo is also good but pricey to use all the time. (Haven’t needed either since using the Friendly shampoo bar though.)
There’s also Friendly conditioner bars, which I haven’t tried yet but have ordered online recently.

OP try coconut oil. Apply a small amount onto your scalp, and gently massage in. Leave for an hour or two and wash off. Only use the 100% organic stuff (cold pressed etc, the kind you can eat).

copperoliver · 27/04/2020 03:06

Sounds like psoriasis to me.
Maybe ask a hairdresser once this is over. X

justilou1 · 27/04/2020 05:14

Little spots sounds more like seborrheic dermatitis. This generally gets worse as you head into perimenopause.

Wonderingwhyme · 27/04/2020 06:49

It hasn’t been itchy for quite a few weeks now and no spots. I had hoped that the nizoral had cured whatever it was and that I’m just left with the dry scalp? It isn’t itchy.

I asked my hairdresser and she didn’t know. She has maybe dermatitis but didn’t know.

My hair has always needed washing every day, have always had greasy roots, that isn’t a new thing for me.

Oh and eyebrows are fine.

T Gel coal shampoo made my hair fall out, as did a GP prescribed shampoo. Be warned.

Nothing has worked and lived with this extreme condtion for 15 years.

I dye my hair and have highlights but the dryness/psoriasis is such a major problem that if I could find something that worked then the impact on my colour would be the least of my worries!

middleager · 27/04/2020 07:26

Oh and stopping dyeing/highlghts for a long time made no difference.

StealthPolarBear · 27/04/2020 07:31

Me too op. T gel and nizoral work for me sporadically.
Being pregnant (no thanks!) and losing weight (currently working in it) improved and cured the condition for me.
I'm going to try the body shop stuff when I can get out again.

StealthPolarBear · 27/04/2020 07:31

I don't dye or put such stuff on my hair, I don't even blow dry it, but I find on the odd occasions that does happen, it also really helps.

Juancornetto · 27/04/2020 07:40

I find avoiding SLS makes the biggest in terms of stopping a flakey snap. Just google SLS free shampoo

lotusbell · 27/04/2020 08:35

Can anyone recommend a scalp exfoliator? I've seen the PK one, wondered if there are others anyone has tried? Always fancied trying one but I have very dense thick hair (which desperately need thining out now) and I don't want something that is a nightmare to rinse out. When my hair is at it's thickest, it can take a good 15 minutes to thoroughly wash my hair to make sure my scalp has a good clean and everything g rinsed away.
OP, I suffer with an itchy scalp and I get spots too. I use sulfate free as SLS makes it worse. I have a persistent red patch on my scalp but no flakes. It seems ok at the moment, touch wood.
The Body Shop Ginger shampoo is fab, hope it works for you.

Wonderingwhyme · 27/04/2020 08:45

So I find all the ‘free’ from shampoos make my hair lanky and feel horrible? Maybe just me but my hair does not like them.

With regards to a scalp exfoliate @lotusbell I have the umberto giannini scalp scrub in an orange pot. Easy to wash out and my hair feels amazing afterwards. You use it once a week instead of shampoo. Thanks for reminding me haven’t used that for at least the whole of lockdown!

@Wonderingwhyme, thanks just had a look at it on Boots, looks good!

sashh · 27/04/2020 09:44

I have psorasis on my scalp so I get Alphosyl on prescription. It keeps it manageable (patches of dry but at least I no longer have the pustules) but I can't have coloured hairbecause it strips it.

Wonderingwhyme · 26/07/2020 13:08

So I’m back again and nothing I have tried has helped. It seems to go in cycles of being bad and itchy with little spots (not loads just a couple) and really itchy and dry scalp (how it is now) then it stops being itchy and spotty and is Just dry.

I guess next step is call GP.

I don’t think it is seborrheic dermatitis. I have googled it and it looks nothing like that.

I find Superdrug's own range Trichology is great, especially the tonic.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/07/2020 21:11

If you're still looking for an exfoliator , "HairBoss" at Superdrug does one . (I've tried the shampoo and the double-mask)

My scalp flares up with many things
At the moment , waking up with a sweaty menopausal head will do it
Stress does it
The thought of trying to book a hairdresser appointment when my scalp will throw a strop "HaHa no you don't" is doing it . Hmm

I have used no hair dye sonce the New Year ( I have used Semi Permenant for the last 3 years ) so no irritants there .

Psoriasis runs in our family .

Wonderingwhyme · 27/07/2020 10:28

Thanks both. Hair colour doesn’t make any difference. I know it’s not good for hair and scalp but it does not set it off. Today not remotely itchy. I can’t work out what triggers it. I don’t sleep that well and my life is stressful but I can’t do anything about that (long story I won’t bore anyone with). I will have a look at those Superdrug products though, thanks .

Bit retro but Vosene really works for me

WouldBeGood · 27/07/2020 10:43

Betacap scalp treatment. It’s a steroid and really helps.

EvilPea · 27/07/2020 10:43

Co washing has stopped me itching my own scalp off my head and I’ve tried everything.

BrokenBrit · 27/07/2020 10:48

T gel twice a week is the only thing that has kept on top of my itchy flaky scalp. I’ve stopped colouring it too at that made it worse. Which is disappointing as I’ve always liked to experiment with my hair. But it’s bliss not being itchy and flaky finally!
