How can I get rid of my flakey scalp please??

Wonderingwhyme · 25/04/2020 11:48

Iv had it on and off before but have had it permanently since December. Nizoral works but it messes up my colour so not an option to use that. Currently using head and shoulders for coloured hair but that isn’t getting rid either.

Iv been putting vitamin e hair and skin oil on my scalp over night and that helps but not ideal as leaves pillow case rank.

I really want to get rid of this as my hair is dark so it’s visible. Can anyone recommend how to get rid of this permanently that won’t affect my colour??

I use the BodyShop Ginger Shampoo with the Conditioner after - it works really well when my scalp is irritated (psoriasis)
When it was just the shampoo I didn't like it (though DH did) the conditioner has made it useable .

Are you making your you rinse completely ?
I got a flexible flat brush (similar to a Tangle Teaser but softer) really nice , can use in the shower or dry

^

BodyShop Ginger isn't my regular one , I use Aveda Shampure and either an Aveda Leave in or a Paul Mitchell The Conditioner as my regular choice

Bloomburger · 25/04/2020 14:44

I've tried everything Philip Kingsley, ginger stuff (worked for a short while), Nizoral, H&S ultra powerful treatment, all sorts of oils and the only thing that seems to work is Eucarin scalp treatment lotion & shampoo.

Elieza · 25/04/2020 14:47

My gp said there are ‘loads’ of different shampoos to treat all kinds of scalp issues. So that’s good!

I started on alphosil, ok but didn’t fix it, then tried dandrazol 2% and found that if I combined the latter with a (leave in for an hour prior to washing)scalp treatment called cocois that my scalp is much improved.

You may want to think about going to the GP and asking for something that won’t affect your coloured hair.
Mine is bleached and I don’t find any if the above affect it.

My GP had his magnifying glass out to investigate my scalp. It was so dry that the layers containing hair follicles were falling out, so my hair was falling out!

I wish I’d gone earlier as it will take a long time for my lost hair to grow back.

Phillip B anti flake.

TheClitterati · 25/04/2020 23:44

Supplement with max doses of good quality fish oil or flax seed oil for omega 3.

Thighdentitycrisis · 25/04/2020 23:46

I have these little spots/lumps on my scalp too, they weep and then turn to crusts and flake. I don’t think it’s dandruff or psoriasis as it’s not all over.

My GP said it was bacterial, every one has it but some people (Lucky me) it’s recurrent. Prescribed course of antibiotics which didn’t work mainly I think because I keep touching it.

Tellmeagain · 26/04/2020 00:54

Living Proof Dry Scalp Treatment has worked really well for me.

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/04/2020 07:29

I’d get a telephone appointment with your gp, none of the treatments you’ve tried so far have actually helped cure it.

Hamsterian · 26/04/2020 07:53

What colour treatment do you do? Bleaching?
I think you may have to accept that any medicated shampoo or shampoo for scalp issues may affect the colour a little bit. You might have to put up with it until it’s gone and then get your colour sorted.
I would look into taking a good supplement with Omega oils, get a GP or dermatologist appointment and try some of the products which you haven’t tried before. Keep a little notebook and try each product for a few days.
For me the L’Oreal discontinued works well, and I still use it when I have a flare up. Shame it was bought in desperation, I avoid L’Oreal due to their animal testing policy but I’ll finish the bottle.
Rinse your hair very, very well and with water that is not too hot. Don’t use dry shampoo.

EyeShipMiceElf · 26/04/2020 07:56

This stuff is really good, think someone else mentioned it and there’s a shampoo to go with it too.

Another vote for Body Shop ginger shampoo and conditioner - glad you've ordered it. It is AMAZING and worked for me when literally nothing else did.

Wonderingwhyme · 26/04/2020 08:36

Thanks I don’t want to bother the GP in the current climate... I’ll see how I get on with the ginger shampoo and cond. my hair is weird and doesn’t get on with all shampoos and conditioners, but I’m willing to try!

What is the L’Oréal discontinued @Hamsterian? Yes it is coloured with a dark brown and then blond (bleach) high lights through it.

Haven’t seen that Euricin product but will put that on my list thanks.

Ginger didn’t seem to work for me, although I might try again at some point!

Currently using kerastase anti dandruff, has zinc (Head and shoulders active ingredient) and Salycylic (sp?) acid. Seems to help reduce it but doesn’t fix it. Smells lovely though and free from lots of aggravating nasties which might also help. Definitely noticeably worse if I stop using it for a wash.

Previously used t gel coal tar which again helped but didn’t fix it. At a guess, t gel active ingredient might have been effective but the sls and other cheap foamers aggravated it. This one even says in the pack it changes hair colour so I stopped using it once I had highlights.

Also tried aveda mint and rosemary purifying, didn’t make any difference At all but smelt great.

I might try eucerin next time after seeing this thread.

I have ‘big’ flakes that are just begging to be picked off or combed out with an eyelash comb. I would say its definitely worse with normal high foam shampoos and marginally better with the free from stuff (which never gets my hair to feel properly clean so I just can’t face it!).

Please report back your results :)

I know the plural of anecdotes isn't data but Grin

My previous cat (she died aged 17 many years ago) had a form of eczema . We tried all types of treatment under the Vet .

What really kept her skin under control was Arthurs CatFood .
I'm not suggesting you eat it ! ! (and I don't even think you can buy it now) but the main difference was Omega Oil .

Your scalp is skin (though very specialised skin) so it's needs to be nurtured from the inside too .

headhurtstoomuch · 26/04/2020 09:48

Something called 50/50 is perfect for that and the only thing that worked on my son when he had cradle cap etc. Think it's a few pounds from the pharmacy. If you can't get it then Vaseline (the first is a greaser version). Will take a few days of applying each night etc.

mrssmiling · 26/04/2020 12:38

I've used Philip Kingsley shampoo and lotion, and they worked really well. However, they are very expensive. I bought some E45 dry scalp shampoo just before lockdown and have been using it since with good results...no itching or flakiness. A friend uses Betnovate scalp lotion, but that is prescription only.

EllaPaella · 26/04/2020 12:49

I use the neutrogena T-gel coal tar shampoo. It's the only thing that really helps or makes a difference. So many shampoos and hair products make mine worse - in fact using any hair product at all even serum really exacerbates it.

Wonderingwhyme · 26/04/2020 13:36

Thanks everyone. Since lockdown they only thing I have put on it is Argan oil but I haven’t seen a difference.

E45 is a good option, didn’t think of them. I find Vaseline is good under my eyes when they get dry and eczema prone in winter but I can’t put Vaseline on my scalp, that would never wash out??

Omega oil is a good shout. I don’t take fish oils as I’m vegetarian. I have seeds etc in breakfast and will looks into how I can increase omega oil in my diet.

headhurtstoomuch · 26/04/2020 15:06

Try getting hold of 50/50 ointment. Watered down version of Vaseline. The best £3 or so you will ever spend. It was recommended to me from my eczema nurse. He was also the one that recommended the Vaseline!

Wonderingwhyme · 26/04/2020 15:18

I’ll have to have a look, google comes up with paraffin thick white stuff?

Does anyone know how much chia and flaxseed you would have to eat a day to get your daily recommended amount?

OP posts:
Elieza · 26/04/2020 15:21

Paraffin is one of the ingredients in the cocois stuff I got from the doctor. It’s very good.

headhurtstoomuch · 26/04/2020 16:09

Yes it's a paraffin type mixture. You can buy over the counter at pharmacy. Massage into your scalp concentrating on the harder areas and if possible leave in overnight. Wash in the morning.

Put a towel or an old pillow cover on your pillow as it is very greasy but you will honestly get results as it starts coming out.

TheClitterati · 26/04/2020 23:47

Flax seed oil is a vegetarian source of omega 3. I take it in capsules
