Horny toenails!!!

I’m only 46 but I can barely hack through my big toenail.

Bought a fancy schmanzy pair of clippers and even with two hands can hardly get through them!!

Is this me for good? You could build a car from these structures!!

What can I do about these beasts? There’s nothing amiss with my hives just age related I think but god there must be a way to thin them out again!

Have you tried cutting them after a bath?

squishedgrapes · 23/04/2020 12:48

I've heard that it can be a sign of a fungal infection. Apparently Vicks vapour rub should sort it

Thighmageddon · 23/04/2020 12:50

You don't have psoriasis do you?

CatBatCat · 23/04/2020 14:18

If its really thick and yellowing its probably fungal infection. Neat tea tree oil applied daily will get rid of it in a few months.

jenthelibrarian · 23/04/2020 14:26

Try filing, rather than cutting.
You'll need a big, fierce-looking metal file from the foot-care section of Boots [or wherever].

This was recommended to me by my lovely lady who does foot care.
It enables you to control how much you're removing without risking cracking or splitting the rest of the nail.

Use the teatree oil for nails [not the neat stuff] after, paint it all over the nail and esp along the 'raw edge' where you've filed to avoid infection getting into the nail.

@Thighmageddon

YES I do

But I had my feet examined by a podiatrist a few weeks ago and she confirmed that my toenails were fine. IE nothing amiss

I just bought some new nail scissors because my toe nails are the same. The blades are a lot shorter so they’re easier to use, I want to say it’s something to do with leverage and a fulcrum but I’m starting dangerously close to Y7 physics.

these ones.

Thighmageddon · 24/04/2020 08:22

@mawbags it's probably psoriasis in your nails then. When the Ps starts to take hold it originally just looks like thickened nails. Lots of GPS mistake it for fungal nails.

Make sure you keep an eye out for joint pain too if you haven't already.

lotusbell · 24/04/2020 08:30

Soak your feet for ages before you cut your nails

Mawbags · 24/04/2020 09:15

@Thighmageddon
So.,, if I get rid of my P then then nails will recover?

My husband has the same, he’s a runner and very fit and healthy so we just assumed it was age. Neither of us have any fungus, that’s a definite.

I'm on biologic drugs and have no psoriasis and joint pain is reduced but my nails are still terrible, so no it doesn't always go away Sad

Mawbags · 25/04/2020 17:42

Ah sorry @Thighmageddon, shame they
Don’t recover

What does the current situation mean for you, are you classed as vulnerable?

I’ve had p for ten years and always refused anything. But it’s taken a huge toll on my mental health. Always second guess myself on that one 😂
