The time has come!

Have seen such good reviews and have been thinking about it for a while. There's me and my 3 teen dds, we all have dark hair and pale skin which I understand it works best on.

Which model should I buy and are there any discounts currently available?

BRI953/00 I bought this recently from Boots but it has gone back up abou 150quid more. I've only used it once and due to go again next week for treatment 2 so I can't comment on results yet but it is not uncomfortable. If it works ill be delighted.

stanski · 20/04/2020 00:22

No recommendation but following as been wondering whether to buy one myself

twosoups1972 · 01/05/2020 18:11

Any update @Banaltra?

Has anyone bought a secondhand one?

I have the lumea advanced (but an older model so I paid £200 on a black Friday. It works amazingly. I wouldn't bother with the extra money on a prestige and mine isnt even the new advanced one. I have black hair and pcos so have lots of excess and it grows back the next day Blush. Now my bikini line is clear for a week or 2 weeks and even then the regrowth is so light and no rashes, ingrown hair etc. I've been lax lately and my hair is coming back so once you are out of the 2 weekly treatments you do need to ensure you keep up with doing it once a month to keep it at bay. If you dont you need to start 2 weekly again. I saw a difference from the 2nd or 3rd go!

Msgiggles30 · 01/05/2020 18:31

Although looking now and boots have the prestige for 325 reduced from 475 which is a good deal especially if you get points back on boots card etc

Msgiggles30 · 01/05/2020 18:34

Advanced is also on a deal for £250 but out of stock at the moment

mbhgfcbyyrrx · 01/05/2020 18:36

Can I jump on this thread please!? Grin

How does it work on peach fuzz? That's my main problem... I've been thinking of getting one for a while!

Thanks!

bonzo77 · 01/05/2020 18:43

I’m really pleased with mine. I got it around Christmas 2017. I used it every 4 weeks till summer 2018 at which point I still needed to shave on my summer holiday. I didn’t use it again till spring 2019 as I had a tan at first then couldn’t be bothered. By summer 2019 I didn’t need to shave on holiday. Again I stopped using it due to tan and winter till a few weeks ago. there’s still the odd fine hair on my legs but no need to shave really. I’ve used it on lower legs, forearms and upper lip / chin. I’d definitely recommend it if you have fair skin, dark hair and some patience.

Jojobythesea · 01/05/2020 18:44

I've got one and it's brilliant. You have to have dark hair though. It's always worked on me although I go very brown in the summer even with suncream on. I have dark hair but it's thick and fine and still works. I only have about 10 leg hairs left now and having smooth pits is great!! It won't work on peach fuzz though. The hair has to be dark. I wish I'd got one when I was twenty. I'd have saved a bomb on waxing!!

Msgiggles30 · 01/05/2020 20:08

@mbhgfcbyyrrx doesnt work on peach fuzz unfortunately so I still have to nair that once a month but has reduced the wiry jaw line hairs I get due to lovely pcos

FunnyCradock · 01/05/2020 20:37

I’ve had mine since 2014. Have had 6 years of hair free pits & bikini. Only do a top up every 2-3 months now, just to make sure the hair doesn’t wake up & start growing again.
Didn’t have the patience to do legs until now (lockdown boredom!) Have done 3 treatments, one week apart (I find this works better for me than waiting 2 weeks between sessions) and am starting to notice a difference, Will definitely buy again when this one stops working. My hair is mid brown, skin tans easily but pale in winter & it works really well for me. I use it on the highest setting & it’s generally pain free (sensitive bits can be a bit twingey!!)

Banaltra · 08/05/2020 17:47

@twosoups1972 apologies. Yes. Two sessions down now. Definite slower growth on my legs, bikini line also but not quite as effective but I think we are on the right track....

Have you purchased yet??

Lndnmummy · 08/05/2020 18:06

Same here. I’m still in the 2 week bit, my lower legs are now pretty much hair free when the two weeks are up. I started my bikini line and upper legs a few weeks later and so have not got as far there. But I can go for a week without shaving there and that’s pretty much unheard of for me (PCOS). Even if it stays like this and I have to use it every two weeks forever (which it won’t) it’s still the best money I have ever spent on myself. No ingrown, no annoying black little dots 2 hours after shaving. No rash no itching. I love it

twosoups1972 · 10/05/2020 11:34

Thank you, haven't bought yet, they're so expensive! Going to wait to see if there are any offers on.

I'm going to buy the Advanced one from the Philips site now. The £224 one. There are three Advanced models. I can't see sufficient difference between them to spend more. I could be wrong.

twosoups1972 · 10/05/2020 12:54

I've just ordered the John Lewis one.

I have an old Philips Lumea that I bought on eBay several years ago for about £70 and it's still going strong even though the model itself is at least 5/6 years old! It has really changed my life, I'm so glad I bought it.

My armpits are completely free of hair though I still zap them about once every three months just to be sure. Bikini nearly all hair gone and any hair that does grow back is much thinner and slower growing. I still zap about once a month. My legs hair are mainly blonde so it didn't work as well there butm on the areas where the hairs were darker, they've gone.

I always use it on 5 (the highest setting) and don't think it's painful.

Hope it's as great for you as it has been for me.

twosoups1972 · 14/05/2020 11:27

Thank you so much, I'm going to return the JL one as I found the same model cheaper on Phillips' website plus an extra 15% discount for first order! So that brought it down to £191 which is very reasonable I think.

Is it easy to use? And painful?

OP posts:
misstiggiwinkle · 14/05/2020 11:48

Which model did you buy? I'd love one but can't get my head around the models and price differences.

empireants · 14/05/2020 17:36

@misstiggiwinkle I have a Lumea SC1991 which is about 5/6 years old. I bought it second hand on eBay for about £70 several years ago and it's still going strong despite having been used regularly throughout that time. I think Philips and all the other manufacturers come out with new features to tempt people to buy new ones. Really the IPL technology is the same so you don't need to spend loads on the fanciest model.

@twosoups1972 it's really easy to use and I don't find it painful, even though I always use it on the highest setting (5). Just be careful to avoid big freckles and moles as it can sting. Hope it works well for you.

twosoups1972 · 18/05/2020 21:38

Well I’ve done my first session! It felt a bit warm but didn’t hurt.

Can I ask something - it says in the manual not suitable for under 15 year olds. Is there any reason my 13 year old dd couldn’t use it under supervision?

OP posts:
TheFlis12345 · 18/05/2020 22:40

It’s only because it hasn’t been clinically tested on younger skin, the same reason it says it’s not approved for use on pregnant women. There is no reason for there to be any issues but they can’t say it is safe as they don’t have official clearance.

bendmeoverbackwards · 31/05/2020 13:06

How long did you leave it till second session?

Also is it safe for your eyes? It says it is and I shut my eyes or look away but just worried because in professional laser places they use protective glasses.
