Does anyone else look really awful on FaceTime?

Intothefuture · 18/04/2020 19:24

I have been video calling family and friends and look horrendous. All my features look bigger and distorted Confused. Everyone else on the call looks normal.

Do I look like that in real life?

Yeah it reminds me of this LOL

Also- dont you find you end up scrutinising your image more than you look at the other person?!

In zoom, Is this before or after you turned on 'touch up my appearance'

As PP say, try different kinds of lighting.

Prop the camera up high (double chins disappear) and slightly to the side (maximise the angles of your face. )

Then forget about the camera and enjoy talking to your friends.

Taking the Fuck That train to Nopeville

Where has this expression been all my life?! Thank you Vanguard

But yes agree, my ugliness on FaceTime is seriously putting me off doing it. I do find wearing my glasses helps as they cover some of the damage up.

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/04/2020 13:22

I look awful in most photos, dh takes one then sits there saying you don’t look that though in baffled tones,

Kangourou · 19/04/2020 13:34

In zoom, on a computer at least, if you right-click on yourself there's an option to not see yourself. So you still look shit but you're blissfully unaware Grin

winningwhilstlosing · 19/04/2020 14:54

I actually sat and cried about this last week. I am having to do lots of video calls - line manager insists on them. I am also supposed to be recording online lessons - I look utterly hideous. Resigning may be my only option!

DareDevil223 · 19/04/2020 16:27

I am sure that in real life I have big eyes, on Zoom, Teams etc I have tiny, sunken eyes and a double (at least) chin. WTAF?? Also, I know that I am very, very pale but on video calls everyone else looks a normal range of colours and I look like Caspar the friendly ghost despite A LOT of blusher.

On the plus side I was offered a great new job on Friday after a series of interviews and meetings on Zoom. I can be convinced that it's my skills and experience that they warmed to as it certainly wasn't my looks Grin

DaydreamingDay · 19/04/2020 17:47

It's just because we are used to seeing ourselves in reverse. Even people who barely know us have probably seen our faces more than we have! I bet if I were to see all of you on Zoom or Teams I would think you look absolutely fine!!

Racheyg · 19/04/2020 17:57

Yes I look hideously ugly. 😓

Racheyg · 19/04/2020 17:58

I also can't do decent selfies either

Intothefuture · 19/04/2020 18:24

I would literally have to take 50 selfies to find one Where I look passable.

I think it’s watching yourself talk too. I’ve realised my teeth at then bottom aren’t straight which never bothered me but now I’ve seen myself talk they really do. And my face looks saggy.

So I’m getting a brace, Botox and fillers when this is all over!

BlackSwan · 19/04/2020 22:28

Mimi that’s the funniest pic. So true.
I use a soft light in front of me, full make up, hair blown out... camera at eye level “, smile. It’s bloody exhausting!

BeeBella · 19/04/2020 22:42

For me it's the chins. SO MANY CHINS. I try balancing it somewhere so its slightly above me but its not really working.

Youngatheart00 · 19/04/2020 22:48

Glad I’m not the only one!! I look pale, tired and bloated. But that may just be me 🙈

Sarcelle · 19/04/2020 22:49

I am usually quite sanguine about my looks but seeing myself on Teams and Zoom makes me think I am revolting.

I have done my research. I use a laptop, it is up to eye level, to the side. I put on more make up than normal. I look like a whey faced pudding, with currants for eyes. It is depressing.

I am not photogenic. I avoid photos, a selfie would never occur to me. My DH has photos of me as a screensaver, he thinks I look good in some photos, not others. A while ago, my hair was looking good. I took a selfie of myself, and I actually liked it. I sent it to my husband. He said I should delete it, I looked like the comedian Jimmy Cricket. Ffs.

The way I look in photos is not how I see myself, I try and avoid any lens for that reason. I don't see myself as vain but seeing myself through a lens is not how I see myself.

pinkhousesarebest · 20/04/2020 09:57

This thread is a great comfort. I thought I was alone. Safe to say that Covid 19 has put paid to any myopic belief that I was aging well. Awful.

PerditaDreamsofFairHorses · 20/04/2020 10:02

I have found my people. I cut myself a fringe on Thursday as I couldn't cope with my ginormous forehead in work video calls. I had been hesitating for years about it, but I definitely look younger, so it's been worth it!

thenightsky · 20/04/2020 10:58

Definitely going to investigate botox and fillers when all this blows over.

GigiLamour · 20/04/2020 11:25

It's all about camera angle/height and lighting.

We had a Zoom chat with some friends last week and my husband was laughing at me for insisting we put the laptop on a pile of books and sit in a room which has a nice light (rather than the downlighters which make everyone look hideous). But it makes a MASSIVE difference. There's a reason why TV employs professionals for filming stuff instead of just sending along an intern with an iPhone. Making people look human on screen is a professional skill that needs training. But even a bit of experimentation with light and angles will pay dividends.

Yes, DH, I am so monumentally shallow that I can't enjoy a chat with old friends if I can see myself looking like a troll in the corner of the screen all the time. Deal with it.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/04/2020 11:33

Oh I look grotesque on cameras ect. I mean I get no one or very few people are actually going to say “Well I’m a bit of babe”, but Honestly 1000% I’m beyond repulsive on camera. Everyone else seems to look stunning as well.

ZaZathecat · 20/04/2020 12:47

Just prop the phone up so you're a bit further away and can see most of your too half. Works for me. Also the fact that my eyesight is not what it used to be helps!

CuckooCuckooClock · 20/04/2020 13:15

I’ve got my first zoom meeting with colleagues this week. Dreading it for all the reasons already mentioned. I’ve got really fine hair and I look almost bald 👩‍🦲 on zoom.
Talking to friends I don’t really care. Colleagues however that’s another matter. Especially all the young fitties.
I’ve convinced myself for years that I’m way above obsessing about my looks but it turns out that I am shallow after all.

Sarcelle · 20/04/2020 13:23

I have said below how dreadful I look despite putting laptop on high, more slap etc.

I have a session this afternoon. I am now saying fuck it.

Laptop on table highlighting my chins, hair pulled back in scraggly pony tail, no make up. This is me in all my plainness, whatever I do does not help, so I am going au natural from now on. I don't care if they do get a fright.

Delatron · 20/04/2020 14:46

I have started upping me game which is a faff. Before I’d just rock up with no make up and un brushed hair. Then I just couldn’t bear to look at myself like that.

So now it’s primer, highlighter, Vaseline on the cheeks help. I even lit a couple of candles the other day (it was evening) and tried to angle them near my face for soft lighting!

Vain but it was making me feel so old and ugly I had to do something!
